Google’s Play Games ecosystem is rolling out two features aimed at making Android gaming easier to discover and easier to start: Play Games Sidekick and Game Trials. Both are typically deployed in phases, so you might see them on your account before— or after—your friends do.
This guide explains what these features are for, what your device and app setup needs to look like, and the exact steps to try them. You’ll also get troubleshooting paths for the most common “it’s not showing up” problems.

What Google is rolling out: Play Games Sidekick and Game Trials
Play Games Sidekick is a companion experience inside the Play Games layer that helps you with gaming-related actions. Depending on the game and your region, Sidekick can surface suggestions, guidance, and next-step prompts that reduce friction when you want to start playing or progress.

What you need before you try them
Before you troubleshoot, verify the basics. These features often depend on your device state, Play Games version, account status, and region rollout.
Prerequisites checklist
- Android device running a modern OS version supported by Play Games (check for compatibility in the Play Store listing for Play Games on your device).
- Google account signed into the device and active in the Play Games app.
- Latest Play Games app installed from Google Play Store (or at least updated recently).
- Google Play Services updated (updates are usually handled via Google Play system updates).
- Region availability: features can roll out by country/region and by account cohort.
Verify your versions (quick check)
Open Play Store → search Play Games → open the app listing → tap About this app. Update if an update button appears, then reopen Play Games.
How to check availability on your device
If Sidekick or Game Trials aren’t visible, it usually comes down to staged rollout, app version, or account/device configuration.

Check Play Games Sidekick availability
- Open Play Games on your Android device.
- Go to your game library or the game detail page for a supported title.
- Look for a Sidekick-related card, prompt, or “companion” UI element associated with the game.
Check Game Trials availability
- Open Play Store or Play Games.
- Search for a game that you suspect is eligible.
- On the game’s detail page, look for a trial-related CTA such as Try/Trial or a trial duration indicator (the exact wording varies by publisher).
How to use Play Games Sidekick
Because Sidekick’s interface can vary by game, treat this as “what to look for” plus the most common interaction patterns.

Typical Sidekick flow
- Open Play Games and go to a supported game.
- Tap the Sidekick prompt/card (if present).
- Follow the suggested next action: it may direct you to start a session, continue a mode, check tasks, or see recommended steps.
- If the game asks for permissions (notifications, storage permissions), allow only what’s required for the game to function.
If Sidekick is present but unresponsive
Try the most reliable fixes first: refresh the app session, then restart the device if it still doesn’t respond. Also confirm you’re on Wi‑Fi or a stable data connection (Sidekick often needs network access to load prompts).
How to use Game Trials
Game Trials are designed to be low-commitment. The exact trial length and what’s included is controlled by the game publisher, but the core workflow is consistent.
Start a trial
- Find a game with a trial option in Play Store (or in Play Games if the trial is surfaced there).
- Tap the Trial action (wording varies, but it will clearly be trial-related).
- Install the game if required (some trials download only what’s needed).
- Launch the game and play within the trial limits.
Understand trial limits before you start
Trials commonly have one or more limits—time remaining, level/content caps, or a “trial window” that ends after first launch or after a fixed duration. If the game provides an on-screen notice, read it before you invest time.
Which apps/games support Sidekick and Trials
Not every game will support these features right away. Publishers and developers enable Sidekick/Trials support on a per-title basis.

How to tell if a game is eligible
- Sidekick: the game detail page or in-game launcher surface includes Sidekick prompts.
- Trials: the store listing includes a trial CTA and/or trial duration messaging.
If you don’t see it on a specific title, it doesn’t necessarily mean the feature is broken—only that your account/device cohort or that title hasn’t been enabled yet.
Troubleshooting when Sidekick or Trials don’t show up
When a feature doesn’t appear, resist the urge to reinstall immediately. A targeted order of operations usually resolves it faster.
Fast checklist (do these in order)
- Update Play Games from the Play Store, then force-close the app and reopen it.
- Confirm Play Services are up to date (open Google Play Store → tap your profile icon → manage apps & device → updates).
- Check for account issues: switch to the correct Google account if you use multiple.
- Clear cache (not data) for Play Games: Settings → Apps & notifications → Play Games → Storage & cache → Clear cache.
- Restart the device and reopen Play Games.
When Game Trials won’t start
If you see a trial option but it fails to install or launch, try these:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Storage: free enough space for the game download (trial installs can still require core assets).
- Network: switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data once to rule out connectivity issues.
- App permissions: verify the game isn’t blocked by permission restrictions you’ve set at the OS level.
- Reboot: a full device restart fixes a surprising number of Play Store session failures.
When the trial ends immediately
Some trials start the countdown on first launch; others start at first download or at a first “activation” step. If it ends too quickly, confirm you haven’t accidentally started multiple installs or trial attempts under different accounts.

When Sidekick loads but shows no prompts
Sidekick may be game-specific. Try a different eligible title and check whether Sidekick UI elements appear there. Also verify you’re logged into the same account where the trials were presented.
Privacy, permissions, and account considerations
Because these features connect your gaming context to a companion experience, it’s smart to review permissions and account settings.
Permissions you may notice
- Notifications for game prompts, tasks, or recommendations.
- Storage for installing or updating game content.
- Network access for loading guidance and syncing game state.
What to check in settings
- Go to Settings → Apps → Play Games.
- Review Permissions and Notifications.
- If you use a privacy-restricting setup (per-app data restrictions, Private DNS, VPN), temporarily loosen it for testing—then re-tighten after you confirm the feature works.
Alternatives if you can’t access Sidekick or Trials
If your account hasn’t been granted access yet, you still have practical ways to “try before you buy.”

- Look for demo/limited access offers on the same game’s store page (some publishers use demos instead of trials).
- Check third-party reviews and gameplay footage to confirm fit (especially for RPGs and live-service games).
- Use refund policies where available: Google Play refund options may apply depending on purchase type and time window.
These won’t replicate Sidekick’s in-app prompts, but they can prevent wasted installs.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Staying on an old Play Games version: even minor updates can change feature availability flags.
- Testing the wrong account: Sidekick and trials can be cohort-based, so switching Google accounts changes what you see.
- Assuming absence means failure: staged rollouts mean you may simply be behind in the rollout wave.
- Ignoring trial rules: if you don’t understand when the countdown starts, you can burn the trial unintentionally.
FAQs
Is Play Games Sidekick available on every Android phone?
No. Availability depends on Play Games support, region rollout, and whether your account and titles are enabled for Sidekick prompts.
Do Game Trials work offline?
Most trials require network access at least for download and for syncing trial status. If a trial starts, offline play may work for short sessions, but plan on needing connectivity.
Will my trial progress carry over if I buy the game?
That depends on the publisher’s rules for that game. Check the trial notes on the store listing or in the game’s trial UI for carryover details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy do I see the trial button but the download fails?
Common causes include insufficient storage, a restricted network policy, or a Play Store install/session error. Update apps, switch networks once, clear Play Games cache, and retry.
What should I do if Sidekick shows nothing for a game?
Try a different title that displays Sidekick UI. If none show, update Play Games and verify your Google account and region settings.
Bottom Line
Play Games Sidekick and Game Trials are built to reduce friction—Sidekick helps you act on what to do next, and trials help you commit with confidence. If you don’t see them yet, it’s usually a rollout or setup issue, not a broken feature.
Update Play Games, confirm you’re on the right account, check store pages for trial CTAs, and use the troubleshooting steps above before reinstalling everything.
