The accessible account ties the report to Performance Max, but does not establish how many people were affected or whether anyone was ultimately reassigned or dismissed. This is a report about a specific advertising-sales context, not a newly verified 2026 staffing announcement.
What the report says
A Yahoo News summary of The Information’s report says Google was looking at reassignment or termination for sales workers whose jobs had been automated by AI tools. The account connects the reported change to Performance Max, Google’s advertising product, and says its adoption reduced the need for some employees who specialized in selling ads for a particular Google service.

What remains unconfirmed
The accessible summary does not provide a report-specific count or settle the outcome. The following details therefore remain unknown from the available account:
#1 Best Overall
- How many workers were affected.
- Which sales teams or locations were involved.
- Whether workers were reassigned, dismissed, or faced different outcomes.
- Whether Google confirmed the reported plan or gave a response.
Performance Max is the automation context described in the summary; that does not show that the product itself made staffing decisions or that it directly replaced particular named employees.
How this differs from Google’s January 2023 job cuts
On January 20, 2023, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced plans to reduce approximately 12,000 roles. In his official message, he described a broad review of product areas and functions intended to align people and roles with company priorities. He mentioned Google’s early AI investments as strategic context, but did not say those planned reductions were specifically the result of replacing the affected workers with AI. The 12,000 figure belongs to that separate, broad announcement—not to The Information’s ad-sales report.

Google’s AI Works page says the company believes AI “will create new roles, evolve existing ones, and change far more jobs than it replaces.” The page describes workforce development, education, partnerships, investment, and resources. This is Google’s public position; it does not verify what happened to the workers described in the ad-sales report.
In an announcement distributed September 18, 2026, Google said its AI & Economy Research Program studies the future of work, productivity and growth, technology diffusion, and AI’s effect on scientific discovery. The announcement states, “Technological shifts are rarely instantaneous.” That is general research context, not evidence resolving this specific staffing claim. See the announcement.
