For personal Google Accounts using Gemini Apps, Google says users without a Google AI subscription will lose access to Gemini Flash and Pro as the change starts taking effect on October 9, 2026. They are listed as keeping Flash-Lite. AI Plus subscribers are listed as keeping Flash-Lite and Flash but losing Pro; Google says it will email Plus subscribers to explain when the change takes effect for them. AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers are listed as keeping all three models.
Which Gemini models will each plan include?
Google’s Gemini Apps Help notice, “Changes to Gemini model access and limits,” gives the following model availability for personal accounts after the change:

| Google AI plan | Flash-Lite | Flash | Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| No Google AI subscription | Available | Not available | Not available |
| AI Plus | Available | Available | Not available |
| AI Pro | Available | Available | Available |
| AI Ultra | Available | Available | Available |
The date and account scope matter: Google says the changes start taking effect for users without an AI subscription on October 9, 2026. The company says AI Plus subscribers will receive an email explaining when the change takes effect for them, so the notice does not establish that all Plus accounts switch on October 9.

If you use Gemini Apps with a personal Google Account and do not subscribe to a Google AI plan, the notice lists Flash-Lite as your remaining model option. Google describes Flash-Lite as suited to fast everyday tasks. In Google’s descriptions, Flash balances speed and reasoning, while Pro is intended for more demanding work such as complex math and coding. These are Google’s positioning statements, not independent performance-test results.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
For someone deciding whether a subscription is worthwhile, the practical distinction is whether Flash or Pro is important to their work. Flash remains listed for AI Plus, AI Pro, and AI Ultra; Pro is listed only for AI Pro and AI Ultra. The notice does not explain why Google is changing access, so there is no basis here to attribute the decision to a particular business or technical motive.
Does this remove free access to the Gemini API?
No such change is stated in Google’s notice. It applies to Gemini Apps used with a personal Google Account, not to every Google product that offers Gemini models. Google’s separate Gemini Developer API pricing page continues to list free-tier API access. The API is a distinct developer product with its own access conditions and pricing; its availability should not be read as a promise that Flash or Pro will remain free inside the Gemini Apps.

What should you check before October 9?
- Confirm your account and plan: The announced table is for Gemini Apps personal accounts. Check the plan shown for the Google Account you use with Gemini.
- Check Plus email: If you subscribe to AI Plus, look for Google’s email about the account-specific timing.
- Review your model needs: If your tasks depend on Pro, the notice lists continued Pro access for AI Pro and AI Ultra, not AI Plus or accounts without a subscription. If Flash is sufficient, AI Plus is listed as retaining it.
- Verify current availability and terms: Google’s Gemini Apps help documentation warns that model names and availability can change, and that usage limits can vary. Check the notice and current plan details in your account rather than assuming availability or limits will remain fixed.
