Google is changing how links appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. More responses now place inline links directly beside the claims they support, while some task-based searches test official-site links at the top of the answer. Google is also expanding article carousels, desktop previews and user-selected Preferred Sources. The changes are designed to make cited pages easier to notice and visit, but Google has not published a percentage increase in clicks or rankings attributable specifically to the higher placement.
What Google changed
Search Engine Journal reported on October 15, 2026 that Google is placing inline links higher in a larger share of AI-generated responses. The report also describes tests that put one or two official-site links at the beginning of an answer for task searches when only a small number of authoritative resources are appropriate. Google did not disclose how much the number of inline links increased.

Google’s May 6, 2026 announcement from Hema Budaraju, vice president of product management for Search, describes direct links beside relevant text, related-article suggestions and a desktop website preview that can appear when a user hovers over an inline link. The announcement also covers links to personal perspectives and other web content.

A June 3, 2026 update from Mrinalini Loew, general manager of the Google Search Ecosystem, says Google increased the number of inline links, added website previews and brought Preferred Sources into AI Overviews and AI Mode. It also mentions subscription labels and testing of Search Console controls and insights for visibility in generative-AI features. Google states that these features had rolled out to all websites worldwide by August 31, 2026.

How the link formats differ
| Format | Where it appears | What the user gets | Status described by Google |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inline link | Beside the sentence or passage it supports | A direct source link; a desktop preview may appear on hover | Expanded availability in AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| Official-site link | At the beginning of some task-based answers | One or two authoritative resources with an explanation of their usefulness | Testing reported for selected searches |
| Related articles and carousels | Within or around an AI response | Additional article suggestions, including more timely-story carousels | Expanded to more locations and languages |
| Preferred Source | AI responses and article carousels | A label and greater visibility for a site selected by the user | Available as a user preference; eligible sites can publish fresh content |
| Creator or publisher profile | Some AI Mode video results | A clickable name that opens a Search profile | Testing |
Why higher inline placement matters
Inline citations can be easy to miss when they sit below a long AI answer. Moving them closer to the relevant statement gives a reader an immediate path to the underlying page instead of requiring a separate search. Website previews on desktop add a quick visual and contextual check before the click.
Google is also adding short contextual introductions in AI Mode that explain why an embedded link may help. That is different from an ordinary citation: the response supplies a reason to open the page, not just the page’s title or domain.

Preferred Sources add a user-controlled layer. Google says people are twice as likely to click through to a Preferred Source and reported more than 345,000 unique sources selected when the feature was announced in May 2026. That figure is Google’s 2026 count, not a guarantee that every selected source receives the same traffic.

Google’s Search Console documentation says site owners can choose whether their sites appear in, or help ground responses in, AI Overviews, AI Mode and related generative features. A site that opts out will not receive traffic or impressions from those features. The control does not act as a ranking signal for Google surfaces outside the generative-AI features it governs.

What this means for a site seeking AI visibility
Keep pages useful as standalone sources
An inline link is selected because a page supports a particular passage. Clear answers, current details and evidence that directly addresses a query give Google a stronger page to cite than a page that only repeats broad keywords.

Decide whether to allow generative-AI inclusion
Review the relevant Search Console setting before opting out. Opting out removes the possibility of impressions and visits from AI Overviews, AI Mode and related features; Google says it does not improve ordinary rankings elsewhere.

Search Console assigns links within an AI Overview the overview’s single search-results position. Raising an inline link inside the answer does not create a separate reported ranking position.
Expect uneven exposure
Preferred Sources depend on a user’s selection, while official-site links, creator profiles and some carousel placements remain tests. A page may be eligible without appearing in every response, language or location.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is still unknown
Google has not supplied a percentage lift caused solely by moving inline links higher, nor has it published a universal click-through rate for the different formats. The available statements establish a broader opportunity for discovery and clicking, not a guaranteed traffic increase. Search Console’s single-position reporting also limits how precisely publishers can isolate the effect of one citation’s location within an AI answer.
Timeline and rollout
- May 6, 2026: Google described direct links, related articles and desktop previews in its generative-AI Search update.
- June 3, 2026: Google said inline links and previews were being expanded, Preferred Sources were added, and Search Console controls and insights were being tested.
- August 31, 2026: Google’s website-owner update says the features had rolled out to all websites worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a higher inline link get a higher Google ranking?
No. Google’s Search Console reporting assigns all links in an AI Overview the overview’s single search position. Google has not reported a separate ranking boost or a percentage traffic lift from moving a link higher within the response.
Can any website become a Preferred Source?
Google says any website publishing fresh content is eligible for users to select as a Preferred Source. Selection is user-controlled, so eligibility does not guarantee inclusion in every AI response or carousel.
What happens if a site opts out of AI features in Search Console?
Google says an opted-out site will not receive traffic or impressions from AI Overviews, AI Mode or related generative features. The setting is not used as a ranking signal on Search surfaces outside those features.
