Roblox Studio is the better choice for beginners who want to learn how to make and publish a game. It teaches a reusable creation workflow—building, scripting, testing, and publishing—and includes AI assistance. Google’s Project Genie is better understood as an experimental way for eligible adults to generate and explore interactive worlds, not as a conventional game editor. For a prompt-first middle ground, Roblox Build can create simpler games on mobile where it is available.

The answer depends on whether “game creation” means exploring a generated environment or learning to produce a game that players can use.

- Consider Roblox Build if you want to start with natural-language prompts on mobile and are comfortable with its simpler 2D and 2.5D focus.
These tools do not have identical goals. Project Genie generates interactive environments for short sessions; Studio is a full creation environment. Roblox Build adds a prompt-led route within Roblox rather than replacing Studio.
How does Google Project Genie work?
Google Labs describes Project Genie as a text- and image-to-world prototype for generating interactive environments. You can describe a world and character, provide images, or choose a supported Street View location, then select a first- or third-person view and enter the generated world. Google’s current help page says a session may begin with a queue, followed by 30 seconds to create and 60 seconds to explore. Afterward, you can reuse prompts, regenerate, download a video, or create another world.

That is useful for trying ideas and exploring generated scenes, but it is not the same workflow as making an editable game project. Google identifies Project Genie as an early research prototype and says access requires a Google AI Ultra subscription and age 18 or older. Street View grounding is currently limited to US locations under Google’s policy.
What its performance figures mean
In an August 5, 2025 announcement, Google DeepMind said the underlying Genie 3 model could generate dynamic worlds navigable in real time at 24 frames per second and 720p, with consistency for a few minutes. That is a stated model capability, not a promise that every Project Genie session will meet those conditions or produce a finished, editable game.

Limits to expect
Google lists possible loss of character control, delayed input, reduced stream quality under server load, and worlds that may not match the prompt, images, or real-world physics. Those caveats matter if you need predictable controls or want to build something players can reliably return to.

Roblox Studio is Roblox’s main creation tool for Windows and Mac, and Roblox describes it as free to use. It covers the practical loop of creating environments, scripting behavior, testing, emulating device sizes, and publishing. Roblox’s beginner onboarding includes a tour and a first-game tutorial that builds a simple 3D platformer while introducing building and scripting concepts. This makes Studio more demanding at first than entering a prompt, but it gives beginners a path toward understanding and changing how a game works.
AI assistance is part of Studio
Studio is not an “AI-free” alternative. Roblox documents AI features that can answer questions, modify scripts and the data model, generate materials or meshes, simulate inputs, and support playtesting. See Roblox’s AI workflow documentation and overview of creation tools. The distinction is that these features assist a broader editor workflow rather than turning Studio into only a prompt box.

Where does Roblox Build fit?
Roblox Build is a mobile-first, natural-language creation tool for people who want to start by describing a game. Roblox says it is aimed at simple formats such as clickers, arcade games, collect-and-score games, side-scrollers, and puzzles, with follow-up prompts available to refine a result. Example prompts include “a clicker game where I collect coins and buy speed upgrades” or “a side-scroller where I dodge obstacles and collect power-ups.”
Build is not available everywhere: Roblox says rollout is gradual, with access for age-checked users aged 9 or older in supported regions. It offers a daily free prompt allowance and sells additional credits for Robux. Games have one creator and default to an audience aged 16 or older. Editing a Build game in Studio permanently converts that version into a standard Studio game and removes its Build status.

Roblox’s current Build documentation gives mixed instructions about playtesting: one part says the feature is coming soon, while later instructions describe tapping Playtest. Check the live product rather than assuming that playtesting is available in every Build experience.

Which should a beginner choose?
Pick Studio for transferable creation skills
If your goal is to make a Roblox game and understand how it is put together, start with Studio’s first-game tutorial. You will encounter more concepts than in a prompt-led tool, but the workflow covers building, scripting, testing, and publishing in one place.
Pick Project Genie for world exploration
If your main goal is to see how a prompt or image can become an interactive environment, Project Genie is the closer match—provided you meet its subscription and age requirements and accept prototype limitations. Treat it as an exploration experience, not a substitute for learning a full game editor.
Pick Build for a prompt-first start
If you prefer to describe a small game rather than begin in a desktop editor, try Build if it is available to you. Its scope is currently aimed at simpler game types, and it is a distinct creation route: opening a Build game in Studio converts it into a standard Studio game.
