A Google Play system update updates selected Android system components through Mainline; a Google Play services update updates Google’s core services software used by apps and Google features. They are separate update types, even though Google groups both within its broader system-services update program.

Google Play system updates
Google Play system updates deliver updates to selected modular Android components, known as Mainline modules. Android 10 introduced Mainline so certain components can receive fixes and improvements outside the regular Android release cycle. Google Play services updates
Google Play services is core software on certified Android devices. It provides device services and APIs that apps can use to connect to Google features such as Sign In and Maps, as well as security and reliability functions. How the names fit together
“Google system services updates” is a broader label for updates spanning Android OS and key Google system services, including Google Play Store and Google Play services. Google may deliver these in separate Android packages. That umbrella does not make the Play system and Play services entries interchangeable. Google: Learn more about Google system services updates

How to check and update each one
Check Google Play services
- Open Settings > profile picture > All services > Privacy & security > System services.
- Under Available updates, open the service you want to update and tap Update if that option appears. Google Android Help: Manage system services settings
Check the Google Play system update
- Open Settings > About > Android version > Google Play system update. Some devices instead place it under Security & privacy > System & updates.
- If the menu path differs, search Settings for Google Play system update and open the matching result.
- Follow the on-screen prompt if an update is available. Mainline updates download automatically and install at a later reboot; a user, administrator, or policy must initiate that reboot. Android Developers: Manage system updates
Menu names and locations vary by Android version, manufacturer, device type, and software skin, so a path shown for one phone may not match another.

The entries track different software, so their version labels and update timing need not match. Google’s release notes, for example, list Google Play services v26.35 dated 2026-09-07, with changes related to account management, location and context, and Wallet. If you are troubleshooting
- Check the update entry that corresponds to the component you mean; a Play services update is not a substitute for a Google Play system update, or vice versa.
- Do not assume either entry is the Play Store app update: Google lists Play Store and Play services separately.
- A Mainline update may need a later reboot before installation is complete. For an individual system service, use the available Update action when shown.
- Avoid clearing Google Play services data as a routine update step. Google warns that doing so can remove saved information. Google Play Help: Keep your device and apps working with Google Play services
