Google Play services updates for Android Lollipop end

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Play services is the background component Android apps rely on for things like Google sign-in, location APIs, push notifications, Google Maps integrations, and various security checks. When updates stop for older Android releases such as Lollipop (Android 5.x), your device can become increasingly incompatible with newer app versions.

This guide explains what the end of Google Play services updates means, how to verify your device’s current status, and the best practical options when you can’t update your phone to a newer Android version.

What it means when Google Play services updates end on Lollipop

When support ends, Google no longer ships updated Google Play services builds that work correctly on that Android version. That doesn’t just affect features—it can stop the plumbing that apps expect to exist, function, and stay secure.

Concretely, you may see one or more of these outcomes: Google Play services stops updating, newly released app versions refuse to run, sign-ins fail, push notifications don’t arrive, and certain APIs (maps, location, safety checks) error out.

Which Android versions count as Lollipop and why that matters

“Lollipop” refers to Android 5.0 (API 21) and Android 5.1/5.1.1 (API 22). Google Play services compatibility depends on both the OS version and device capabilities.

If you’re on 5.0/5.1, you’re operating with older platform APIs and security baselines than current apps target. Even if your apps install today, they can break later after Play Store pushes newer app builds.

How to check whether your device still gets Google Play services updates

Start with facts on your specific device: your Android version and your installed Google Play services version.

Check your Android version

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap About phone (or About device).
  3. Find Android version.

If it shows 5.0, 5.1, or 5.1.1, you’re in the Lollipop range.

Check your Google Play services version

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Search for Google Play services.
  3. Open the app listing.
  4. Look for the Version line on the listing (or scroll to see details).

If the Play Store shows updates available, you can still receive updates. If it only shows “Installed” with no update option (or errors during download), your device may be at the end of compatibility.

Check recent update activity

  1. Go to Settings > Apps (or Apps & notifications).
  2. Find Google Play services.
  3. Tap it and look for App details and Storage information.

While Android 5.x doesn’t always show a clean “last updated” timestamp in every build, the Play Store listing and update behavior usually confirm whether updates are still flowing.

What you can expect to happen to apps after support ends

Most breakages show up gradually. Apps often continue to launch for a while, then fail on actions that require Google APIs.

Notifications never arrive Google Cloud Messaging / push pipeline not compatible Missed messages, delayed alerts
Maps and location features fail Location or Maps API dependency changes Navigation/search doesn’t work
App crashes or freezes after update Play services API mismatch or missing components App becomes unusable
Play Store updates fail Play services / Play Store dependency errors Apps can’t update to newer builds

Security and compatibility impacts (what breaks first)

Google Play services doesn’t just provide features; it also participates in security-related checks used by many apps. When updates stop, you’re more likely to encounter two issues: compatibility failures and a widening security gap compared to newer Android builds.

Even if an app seems to work, it may be running with older libraries and older trust paths. If you rely on banking, password managers, or 2FA prompts, the risk isn’t theoretical.

Options if your Lollipop device is still in use

There’s no single magic setting that restores Play services compatibility on an end-of-support OS. Your best options fall into three buckets: update Android, change devices, or reduce dependency on affected features.

Update Android (if your phone still has a vendor update path)

Some Lollipop devices can be updated to a newer Android release through the original manufacturer (or, rarely, a verified custom ROM). If your device has an official update path, it’s the cleanest fix.

  1. Go to Settings > About phone.
  2. Tap Software update (or System updates).
  3. Check for updates and apply any available package.

If you only have “no updates available,” assume you’re stuck on Lollipop unless you change devices.

Use a newer device for critical apps

If the phone is still usable for calls and basic browsing, keep it for low-risk tasks. For apps that require Google APIs (sign-in, push, maps, banking), use a modern phone where Google Play services continues to update.

Reduce app dependencies (permissions, sign-in methods, background sync)

You can sometimes limit breakage by changing workflows: use web versions for sign-in-heavy apps, reduce background tasks, and keep apps from depending on push. These are partial fixes, not full restores.

  • For apps that support it, switch from Google-based login to a non-Google method (only if your service offers it).

Verify and repair on-device Google Play services issues

If your device still shows the ability to update Google Play services, the next step is to ensure it’s installed correctly and not stuck in a broken state.

Step-by-step: reinstall/update Google Play services

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Find Google Play services.
  3. Tap Storage and check that it has adequate space (recommendation: keep at least 500MB free on older devices).
  4. Open Google Play Store.
  5. Search for Google Play services.
  6. Tap Update if available.

If you don’t see an Update button, it may mean your device is no longer receiving compatible builds.

Step-by-step: clear cache/data for Google Play services and Play Store

This fixes a surprising number of “outdated” or “can’t update” situations caused by corrupted local state.

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Select Google Play services.
  3. Tap Storage.
  4. Tap Clear cache, then test.
  5. If it still fails, tap Clear data. Recheck Play services update availability afterward.
  6. Repeat the same steps for Google Play Store.

Clearing data can reset some local settings for the Play Store. You may need to sign in again.

Step-by-step: remove problematic updates or roll back Play services (only if available)

On some devices, Play services and Play Store show an option like Uninstall updates. That can help if an update introduced incompatibility.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Select Google Play services (and/or Google Play Store).
  3. If you see Uninstall updates, tap it.
  4. Restart the phone.
  5. Reopen Play Store and check for a stable update.

If the button isn’t available, your build doesn’t support rollback and you should stick to cache/data resets.

App says Google Play services is outdated

  1. Go to Play Store > search Google Play services and check for an Update button.
  2. Clear cache for Google Play services and Google Play Store.
  3. Restart the phone and retry the app sign-in.
  4. If updates won’t download, assume your device is no longer compatible with the required build.

If Play Store refuses to install the required version, there’s no safe “manual” replacement you can rely on.

Notifications, sign-in, or maps fail

  1. Confirm your device date/time are correct: Settings > Date & time > enable Automatic date & time.
  2. Confirm Google account sync: Settings > Accounts > your Google account > ensure sync is enabled.
  3. Reopen the app after clearing cache for Play services.
  4. Check whether the app itself has a minimum Android requirement in its Play Store listing.

Crash loops tied to Play services

  1. Boot and test in Safe mode (if available on your device) to rule out third-party interference.
  2. Clear cache/data for the crashing app (not just Play services).
  3. Update the app from Play Store again, if it’s still offered for Android 5.x.
  4. If crashes happen immediately after updating the app, compatibility is likely.

Play Store update won’t download

  1. Check storage space: free at least a few hundred MB.
  2. Switch networks (Wi‑Fi <-> mobile data) if you can.
  3. Clear cache/data for Google Play Store.
  4. Clear cache/data for Download Manager.
  5. Reboot and retry.

If you get persistent install errors that mention device incompatibility, updates are likely blocked by minimum requirements.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Installing random Google Play services APKs from the web. On an end-of-support device, this is how people end up with malware or broken auth.
  • Clearing all app data repeatedly without checking Play Store listing requirements. You may erase settings while missing the real cause.
  • Ignoring the Android version requirement in the Play Store listing for your app. Newer app builds may never be meant for API 21/22.
  • Expecting a “fix” to restore security updates. Even if things appear to run, the underlying OS won’t get newer protections.

Alternatives and risk-aware workarounds

If you must keep using Lollipop for a while, use safer paths that don’t depend on the most fragile Play services features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use web versions of apps instead of native ones

For many services, the web app works as long as your browser supports modern TLS and scripts. You’ll miss push notifications and native integrations, but sign-in can be more reliable.

Use offline workflows where possible

For media consumption, downloads, or document viewing, offline workflows reduce dependency on ongoing Play services API calls.

Don’t rely on unofficial APK installs

Unofficial APK updates are risky and often fail silently. They also can break the integrity checks used by security-sensitive apps. If Play Store can’t install an update for your OS, forcing it rarely ends well.

FAQs

Does Google Play services stop updating exactly on a specific date for Android Lollipop?

Support timelines depend on Google’s compatibility requirements and app/API policy changes, and they can vary by device and build. The most reliable way to confirm is on-device: check whether Play Store still offers a working Google Play services update for your Android 5.x device.

Can I update Google Play services manually to keep apps working?

Only update via Google Play Store is recommended. If Play Store can’t install a compatible version on your Lollipop build, manual installs often fail, create security risks, or break authentication.

Why do only some apps break while others still work?

Different apps depend on different Google Play services APIs. When compatibility gaps appear, apps that use the affected APIs (sign-in, push, maps, location) typically break first, while simpler apps may keep running until their dependency chain changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will clearing cache/data bring back Google Play services updates?

Cache/data resets can fix corrupted state and Play Store errors, but they can’t restore missing compatibility. If your device is blocked from receiving the required Play services build, resets won’t change that.

Is it safe to keep using Lollipop if apps still open?

Safety depends on your app usage. Even if apps appear functional, you’re running an older OS with a smaller security surface. For password access, financial transactions, and 2FA, upgrading to a supported device is the safer choice.

Bottom Line

When Google Play services updates end for Android Lollipop, you can’t rely on future app compatibility. The fastest path to stability is updating Android (if possible) or switching to a newer device for apps that depend on Google APIs.

On a Lollipop device you can still troubleshoot and reduce breakage, but treat any “outdated Play services” message as a sign that your phone is hitting a compatibility wall—not just a temporary software glitch.
