For most people using a certified Android phone with Google services, keep Google Play Protect on as your built-in security baseline. Add a reputable third-party antivirus app only if it provides a feature you need, independent test results that matter to you, or protection your device lacks. In the July 2026 AV-TEST evaluation, Play Protect earned 6/6 for protection, performance and usability—but several third-party apps earned the same scores.
What Play Protect does—and where it is available
Google Play Protect automatically scans Android apps using on-device and cloud-based components. On supported, certified devices, it checks apps from Google Play and apps installed from other sources. Google recommends keeping it enabled. Google’s Play Protect overview describes the service, while AV-Comparatives’ 2025 Mobile Security Review discusses its coverage and availability.
That baseline is not present in every Android setup. Google services, including Play Protect, are typically unavailable on some modified Android systems and in mainland China; availability can also depend on the device model, Android version and regional restrictions. If your phone lacks Google Play Services or Play Protect, a compatible security app may be more important. Check what is actually available on your device rather than assuming all Android phones have the same protections.
How the independent test results compare
Test scores are useful snapshots, not guarantees. Compare the date, method and categories, and avoid treating one round as proof that an app is always safer than another.

AV-TEST’s July 2026 evaluation
In its July 2026 Android evaluation, AV-TEST assessed 12 mobile security products using current product versions and default settings, allowing updates and cloud queries. The test considered malware detection and usability, including performance and false positives. Products could earn up to six points in each category. Play Protect scored 6/6 in protection, 6/6 in performance and 6/6 in usability; several third-party apps also scored 6/6 across all three. See AV-TEST’s Android results.
AV-TEST’s July–December 2025 endurance test
A separate AV-TEST endurance test, published January 15, 2026, ran on Android 12 from July through December 2025. It challenged products with nearly 9,000 new attackers and a further 9,000 known attackers. Play Protect detected 99.6% of the real-time samples and 99.7% of the reference set. Avast, AVG, Avira, Bitdefender, Kaspersky and Norton each recorded 100% detection in that specific test. These percentages apply to the samples, versions and conditions used in that test; they do not predict every future threat or guarantee protection. Read the endurance-test report.

When to stay with Play Protect
- Your phone is certified, has Google services and Play Protect is available.
- You want a built-in scanning baseline without adding another security app.
- You do not need a particular extra feature that Play Protect lacks.
Google reported that Play Protect scanned over 350 billion Android apps daily and that real-time scanning identified more than 27 million new malicious applications from outside Google Play during 2025. These are company-reported figures in Google’s February 2026 retrospective, not independent audit results. They indicate the scale Google reports for the service, not a guarantee that every malicious app will be detected. Google’s 2025 Android and Google Play security retrospective also reports 266 million risky installation attempts blocked and 872,000 unique high-risk applications addressed as part of expanded fraud-protection activity.

Consider one when you can name the gap it fills: your device lacks Google protections, or you want an additional feature such as web protection, app auditing, privacy tools or anti-theft functions. Those features vary by vendor, device and region, so confirm that the specific app offers the function on your phone and Android version before installing it. AV-Comparatives notes that third-party apps can provide broader coverage, but the label “antivirus” alone does not tell you which features are included.

If you install apps from outside Google Play, do not treat either a strong test score or the existence of scanning as proof that sideloading is safe. Play Protect scans apps from third-party sources on supported devices, but test results cannot establish that any individual download is harmless.

A practical way to choose
- Check your baseline. Confirm that your phone has Google services and Play Protect is available and enabled. If it is a modified Android system or lacks Google services, verify which security options work on that model and in your region.
- Identify the missing feature. Decide whether you specifically need web protection, app auditing, privacy controls or anti-theft tools. Check the vendor’s current feature list for your device and Android version.
- Compare recent lab results. Look at the test date, methodology, protection score, performance and false-positive/usability results. A result from one test period should not be generalized to all products or future performance.
- Check availability and terms. Confirm local availability and current pricing directly with the provider; the cited laboratory tests do not establish current prices or regional availability.
- Install only if the case is clear. Keep Play Protect enabled as your baseline when it is available, and add a third-party app when its tested performance and working features address a specific need.
