Google Play Protect is Android’s built-in app protection: Google says it scans installed apps daily and checks apps installed from outside Google Play in real time. Third-party security apps may add features such as web protection or phishing-message checks, but feature lists alone do not prove they detect more malware. The practical choice is to keep Play Protect enabled and consider another app only for a specific additional need.
What Google Play Protect can detect
Play Protect is built into Android and combines on-device capabilities with cloud-based protections. Google describes several detection approaches, including machine learning, static and dynamic analysis, signatures, heuristics, similarity analysis, developer relationship analysis and reports from third parties. Its systems look for behavior such as unauthorized access to or sharing of personal data, unexpected interactions with other apps, aggressive app installation, visits to malicious sites and attempts to bypass built-in security. Google’s potentially harmful app (PHA) categories include spyware, phishing, ransomware, trojans and billing fraud, among other harmful behaviors. This is a list of categories the service is designed to address—not a promise that every instance will be detected. Google notes that an app’s impact can depend on factors such as Android version and connectivity.
Apps from outside Google Play
Google says Play Protect scans installed apps regardless of where they came from. Its on-device guidance describes daily scans and real-time checks when someone tries to install a non-Play app. For an unfamiliar app, Play Protect may offer an additional real-time code-level scan. If the user agrees, app data may be sent to Google for analysis; this specific optional flow should not be confused with a claim that every ordinary scan sends app data in the same way. What happens when it finds a problem
Depending on the finding, Play Protect may warn the user, block an installation, disable an app or remove it. Google’s developer documentation says it removes apps flagged as potentially harmful because they contain malicious behavior—not simply because Google is unsure whether they are harmful. The response can vary with the app and device context.
What third-party Android security apps may add
Third-party products vary by app, version, settings and permissions. The Google Play listing for Bitdefender Mobile Security describes malware scanning and web protection. The listing for Malwarebytes Mobile Security describes app and file scanning as well as phishing-message protection. These are vendor-described features; check each current listing because capabilities can change.

A feature such as web protection or phishing-message checks can address a different exposure from scanning installed apps. But the feature’s presence does not establish that the app catches more malware overall, nor that every third-party app inspects more than Play Protect. The available comparisons do not provide matched independent tests of web, message-phishing and app-malware detection for these named products.

What one independent test found
AV-TEST’s November 2025 Android evaluation covered 12 mobile security products using default settings. It focused on malware detection and usability, including performance and false positives. The results below are scores from that specific lab round, not universal detection rates or guarantees for every device or future release. See AV-TEST’s November 2025 results.

In this round, Bitdefender scored higher in protection while both products received full scores for performance and usability. That is a useful dated comparison under AV-TEST’s conditions, not evidence that Bitdefender will outperform Play Protect in every situation or that either catches every threat.

For app-focused protection, Play Protect already provides built-in scanning, including checks on non-Play installs. A third-party app may make sense if you specifically want a vendor’s additional feature, such as the web protection described in Bitdefender’s listing or the phishing-message protection described in Malwarebytes’ listing. Assess the exact current feature, permissions and settings rather than assuming that installing another app automatically improves malware detection.

- Identify the extra risk you want to address, such as web threats or suspicious messages.
- Check the product’s current Android requirements, permissions and feature availability before installing it.
- For detection comparisons, look for recent independent testing that identifies the tested product, date, settings, protection results, false positives, performance and usability.
The November 2025 AV-TEST scores are one point of comparison; they do not quantify Play Protect’s false-negative rate or establish that third-party apps are universally superior. Consider privacy and friction too: for example, Google says an optional code-level scan of an unfamiliar app can send app data for analysis after the user agrees.
