Google Pixel Watch 5 (45 mm) Review: A Refined Android Smartwatch, Not a Must-Upgrade

The Pixel Watch 5 is a polished, feature-rich Android smartwatch, but its changes over the Watch 4 are modest and some health features may require Premium.

The Google Pixel Watch 5 (45 mm) is a capable Android smartwatch with a bright display, broad health-sensor hardware and Google’s estimate of up to 40 hours of battery life with the always-on display enabled. Its improvements are targeted rather than transformational: reviewers see a more polished experience, but describe it as a modest step beyond the Pixel Watch 4. That makes it a stronger choice for someone buying a Pixel Watch for the first time than for a Watch 4 owner looking for a compelling reason to replace one.

What is new on the Pixel Watch 5?

The Watch 5 keeps a familiar design while updating the experience and hardware. Google lists Wear OS 7.0, a Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor with a Cortex-M55 co-processor, and 64 GB of eMMC storage. The hardware package includes heart-rate, ECG-compatible electrical, blood-oxygen (SpO2), skin-temperature, cEDA and motion sensors.

Those specifications describe what is built into the watch, not a guarantee that every health insight is available to every user. Some features require Google Health or Google Health Premium, and feature availability can depend on country and other requirements. Check Google’s current service and regional terms before buying if a particular health feature is central to your decision.

Tom’s Guide characterizes the Watch 5 as a relatively minor update and says existing Watch 4 owners have little reason to upgrade. TechRadar, by contrast, praises refinements and accuracy while identifying the subscription model as a value concern. Those are reviewers’ assessments, not a single verdict that applies to every buyer.

  • Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]

Does the 45 mm size fit comfortably?

The 45 mm case measures 45 mm across and 12.3 mm tall; Google lists the watch at 36.7 g without its band. The supplied active band comes in two sizes: small for wrists measuring 150–185 mm and large for 165–215 mm. The overlap means some wrists fall within the listed range for either band size, so comfort and preferred fit are worth checking in person if possible.

Google specifies a 320 ppi AMOLED LTPO display with always-on functionality and peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass 5. Google also lists 5 ATM water resistance and an IP68 rating; these ratings indicate specified resistance, not immunity to damage in every situation. Google describes the watch as repairable, but a particular replacement-part listing is not established here.

How long does the battery last?

Google lists a 465 mAh typical battery and estimates up to 40 hours with the always-on display, or up to 72 hours in Battery Saver mode. These are manufacturer estimates, and Google cautions that actual battery life varies and may be lower. Display settings, feature use and other conditions affect how long a charge lasts.

Tom’s Guide reported an average of 48 hours per charge during its review testing. That is one publication’s test result, not a promised runtime or a result under conditions every owner will reproduce. For an upgrade decision, compare the Watch 5 and your current watch using similar settings and everyday use rather than assuming the longest advertised figure.

The included Quick Charge Dock is listed at approximately 15 minutes to 50%, 30 minutes to 80% and 60 minutes to 100%. Google says a USB-C power adapter rated at least 7.5 W is required, and the adapter is not included. The dock itself is included in the box.

What phones and features does it support?

Google says the watch works with most phones running Android 12 or newer. A Google account and the relevant apps are required, and supported features can vary with country, language and other requirements. Confirm compatibility and local feature availability before purchase, particularly if you are buying for a phone outside Google’s own Pixel range.

The sensor list offers a broad set of health and activity capabilities, but the value of that hardware depends partly on the software experience and any paid service tier. TechRadar flags Google Health Premium as a drawback for people who want the full fitness-feature set without a recurring charge. The specific features included in each tier can change, so check the current Google Health terms rather than relying on an old feature list.

Is the Pixel Watch 5 worth buying?

For a new Android smartwatch buyer who wants Google’s software, a bright display and a substantial range of health sensors, the Watch 5 makes a credible case. It is less persuasive as an upgrade from the Watch 4: Tom’s Guide views the changes as minor, so the decision should turn on whether the newer features matter to you, not just the model number.

Price is another part of that decision. Google’s US launch announcement said preorders began August 12, 2026, with retail availability August 20 and a starting price of $429 for the 45 mm version. Tom’s Guide listed US Wi-Fi at $429 and LTE at $529; TechRadar listed $429.99 in its review. The figures differ by source and possibly by configuration or pricing presentation. Check the live Google Store listing for your market and connectivity choice before buying; these are time-sensitive prices, not a single enduring global price.

For structured athletic training, Tom’s Guide favors Garmin’s depth of training insights, while describing the Pixel as stronger in smart features. If training analysis is your priority, compare the specific coaching and metrics you use, alongside price and battery life, rather than treating a broad health-sensor list as a substitute for training tools.

How to decide between the Watch 5 and alternatives

  • Already own a Pixel Watch 4: reviewers describe the Watch 5 as a modest update. Upgrade if a specific new capability or your current watch’s condition justifies the cost.
  • Choosing your first Pixel Watch: weigh the display, sensor set, Android compatibility and battery estimate against the live local price.
  • Want fitness insights without a subscription: check which features are currently included in Google Health and Google Health Premium, and compare them with alternatives before committing.
  • Considering LTE: verify the local model price, carrier support and plan requirements; the cited US LTE price is not a universal price.
  • Unsure about fit: compare the 45 mm case dimensions and listed wrist ranges with your wrist and preferred band fit.
