What makes an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor different?

Google’s latest fingerprint direction is a nod to ultrasonic tech—something you’ll see in a number of higher-end Android phones. Instead of relying purely on the way your finger changes visible light or capacitance through a thin layer, an ultrasonic sensor uses high-frequency sound waves to “read” the fingerprint’s ridges and valleys.

#1 Best Overall
Google Pixel 9 - Unlocked Android Smartphone with Gemini, 24-Hour Battery, Advanced Camera, and 6.3" Actua Display - Porcelain - 128 GB
  • Google Pixel 9 with Gemini gets the best of Google AI first, so you can take amazing photos, make edits like magic, and get things done even easier
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[1]; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • The award-winning Pixel Camera includes a 50 MP main sensor for incredible image and video quality, and a new 48 MP ultrawide camera for stunning Macro Focus
  • Make your photos better than you can imagine with Google AI; take a picture and be in it too with Add Me[2]; Best Take helps everyone look their best; and with Magic Editor, you can reframe photos, reimagine the scenery, and more[2]
  • Get more info quickly with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; instead of typing, use Gemini Live; it follows along even if you change the topic or switch the question[30]; and Pixel Screenshots helps you save things you’ll want to remember later

In plain English: it can be more reliable in scenarios where traditional capacitive sensors sometimes struggle—like with certain screen protectors, smudges, or less-than-perfect finger placement. That reliability is exactly why ultrasonic sensors have been creeping into more premium devices over the last few years.

Why this matters for Pixel 9 owners

If the Pixel 9 is moving to an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, it’s largely about reducing the little annoyances that add up day to day. The goal is faster unlocks, fewer failed attempts, and better performance when your screen has fingerprints on it (or you’ve got a tempered glass protector installed).

What to expect in real-world use

In practice, ultrasonic fingerprint sensors tend to offer a more consistent experience across different surfaces and conditions. You’ll still need to place your finger correctly (no fingerprint tech is magic), but the sensor’s approach generally makes it less sensitive to common friction points like slight misalignment or certain types of screen coverage.

  • Pixel 10 is designed - scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and has an IP68 rating for water and dust protection[21]; plus, the Actua display - 3,000-nit peak brightness is easy on the eyes, even in direct sunlight[4]

That said, performance can still vary depending on the exact sensor implementation—things like calibration, how quickly it wakes and scans, and how the phone handles edge cases. Still, moving from older fingerprint approaches to ultrasonic usually signals a clear intent: fewer misses and more dependable daily usability.

So, is ultrasonic better than optical or capacitive?

Ultrasonic typically lands in the “more dependable” category compared with older or simpler alternatives. Optical sensors (under-display cameras for fingerprints) can be affected by lighting, screen cleanliness, and protective films. Capacitive sensors are widely used and often reliable, but they can be finicky depending on the screen protector material and how clean the sensor area stays.

  • The 6.3-inch Pixel 7 display is super sharp, with rich, vivid colors; it’s fast and responsive for smoother gaming, scrolling, and moving between apps[4]
  • Google Pixel 7 has wide and ultrawide lenses with up to 8x Super Res Zoom[5]; and Cinematic Blur brings more drama to your videos

Ultrasonic aims to bridge those gaps by reading the fingerprint geometry using sound. That’s why, when you see it in a flagship-adjacent device, it’s usually framed as an upgrade in both accuracy and consistency.

Bottom Line

If the Pixel 9 really does include an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, it’s a smart, practical upgrade. You’re looking at a better shot at consistent unlock performance—especially with screen protectors and less-than-ideal conditions—while keeping the day-to-day experience quick and effortless.
