At launch, the Google Pixel 8a and Pixel 10a both had a $499 US starting price, so there was no difference in stated base price. The Pixel 10a is the newer and larger phone, with a Tensor G4 chip, a bigger rated battery, a brighter rated display, and an IP68 rating. The Pixel 8a is the smaller, older model. Which one is the better value today depends on current prices, and those vary by retailer, storage size, condition, and promotion, so the section below explains how to compare them properly.
Launch price versus today’s price
Google announced the Pixel 8a on May 7, 2024 and the Pixel 10a on February 18, 2026, and priced both at $499 in the US. That is the only price difference Google’s launch information establishes: none. It says nothing about what either phone costs now. Google’s launch copy presents the 10a as a way to get its “most helpful features at an accessible price point,” which is product positioning rather than an independent price comparison. The Pixel 10a launch post is by Laura Kastilani, Product Manager, and the Pixel 8a announcement is by Soniya Jobanputra, Director of Product Management.

Current prices are a separate question, and a launch-price tie does not mean the phones are equally good value today. Used or resold units, carrier-locked units, and promotional bundles can all make the price gap look larger or smaller than it is. To make a fair comparison:

What the differences mean in practice
Screen and size
The Pixel 10a’s screen is 0.2 inches larger on the diagonal, at 6.3 inches against 6.1 inches. Google rates its peak brightness at 3,000 nits, compared with 2,000 nits for the 8a. Both support refresh rates up to 120 Hz, but the 10a’s range is listed as 60–120 Hz, so it can drop to 60 Hz when it does not need the higher rate. The 8a has slightly higher pixel density, at 430 PPI against 422.2 PPI. These figures describe size and rated brightness only. They do not show how either screen looks in color, glare, or direct sunlight.

Processor and software life
The 10a uses Google’s Tensor G4 and the 8a uses Tensor G3. Both have the same 8 GB of RAM and the same Titan M2 security chip, so the chip generation is the main hardware difference. Google does not provide a benchmark for the performance gap in these announcements, so this article does not quantify one.

Battery and charging
The 10a has a larger typical battery, at 5,100 mAh against 4,492 mAh. Google estimates 30+ hours of battery life for the 10a and 24+ hours for the 8a, and up to 120 and 72 hours respectively with Extreme Battery Saver. These are Google’s estimates under its own test conditions, not independent measurements, and real use depends on screen time, signal strength, and apps.
The 10a supports up to 50% charge in about 30 minutes with a 45W USB-C PPS charger or higher, which Google sells separately. The 8a’s specification summary lists fast charging without a wattage figure. Both support Qi wireless charging. If you already own a charger, check its wattage and whether it supports USB-C PPS before assuming the 10a will charge at its rated speed.

Cameras
The 8a has a 64 MP wide camera and the 10a has a 48 MP wide camera. Both have a 13 MP ultrawide and a 13 MP front camera. Megapixel count alone does not determine image quality, since sensor size, pixel processing, and software all matter. The 10a’s listed features include Camera Coach and Macro Focus. Google promotes both cameras in its launch copy, but that is vendor marketing. For a camera verdict, look for independent side-by-side photo tests of the specific models, and read them before deciding.

Durability
The 10a has Gorilla Glass 7i and an IP68 rating, while the 8a has Gorilla Glass 3 and IP67. IP ratings describe how the phone performs under controlled test conditions for dust and water. They are not a promise of waterproofing, and they do not cover drops or cracks. Google also describes recycled materials and a flatter back for the 10a, but those are sustainability features, not durability tests.
Best Value
Which one to choose
Choose the Pixel 10a if the following apply:
- You want the larger 6.3-inch screen and higher rated peak brightness.
- You want the newer Tensor G4 chip and the longer rated battery life.
- You want the higher IP68 rating and Gorilla Glass 7i cover.
- Its current price is acceptable for the storage size and condition you need.
Choose the Pixel 8a if the following apply:
- You prefer the smaller 6.1-inch body.
- It is substantially cheaper than the 10a for the same storage size and condition, after you include any charger or case you need.
- You do not need the 10a’s larger battery, faster charging rate, or newer chip.
Both phones have the same starting price, 8 GB of RAM, storage options, front camera, and seven-year update commitment, so those factors should not decide the choice. Compare the current price of the exact configuration you plan to buy, and let the size, battery, and durability differences settle the rest.
If you buy a Pixel 10a, a Pixel 10a case should be checked against the exact model, since 8a and 10a cases are not interchangeable.
