The Google Pixel 8 remains a compelling choice if you want a relatively compact Android phone, a smooth display and a camera system reviewers praised. Its strongest long-term advantage is Google’s seven-year update commitment, but that clock began when the phone first became available on the US Google Store—not when you buy it. In 2026, whether a used or refurbished Pixel 8 is worth buying comes down to the actual price, condition, remaining support and whether you need a telephoto camera or top-tier performance.

What the Pixel 8 does well
Compact size without giving up a smooth display
At 6.2 inches, the Pixel 8 is a more compact option than many large-screen phones. Tom’s Guide praised its brighter 120 Hz display and smaller design, while Digital Trends also described it as compact. Those are reviewer assessments; brightness and comfort will depend on your surroundings and preferences.

Versatile cameras and Google’s image-processing features
Reviewers at Tom’s Guide and Digital Trends spoke positively about the Pixel 8’s camera capabilities and software features. Its rear setup pairs a 50 MP main camera with a 12 MP ultrawide, according to GSMArena. That combination offers different framing options, but megapixel counts alone do not establish image quality, and there is no dedicated telephoto camera for optical zoom.

A long announced update commitment
Google says the Pixel 8 receives updates for seven years from when it first became available on the Google Store in the US. Google adds that updates may include feature drops and other software updates. This is a commitment measured from the phone’s original availability, not a fresh seven-year period for each buyer. Check Google’s current Pixel update information before purchasing to confirm the applicable support details.

Pixel 8 drawbacks to weigh
Performance is not its strongest selling point
Tom’s Guide found the Pixel 8’s performance behind competing flagships. That matters most if you regularly run demanding games, intensive workloads or expect the fastest response under heavy use. For everyday use, the review evidence here does not establish how every buyer will experience performance, so judge it against your own workload rather than assuming it will be a problem for everyone.
No dedicated telephoto camera
The rear cameras cover main and ultrawide perspectives, but the phone lacks a dedicated telephoto camera. If you often photograph distant subjects and want optical zoom, this is a meaningful limitation; consider a phone with a telephoto lens instead.

Aging battery and the realities of long ownership
Google’s 4575 mAh figure is the typical capacity specification for a new Pixel 8, not a guarantee about the battery in a used handset. Battery wear depends on the individual unit and its history. Android Authority’s review also noted that keeping a phone for a long period can involve a battery replacement; it does not establish a tested lifespan for every Pixel 8.

Water resistance is not waterproofing
Google says the phone was designed to comply with IP68 under IEC 60529 when it leaves the factory, but cautions that it is not waterproof or dustproof and that resistance may decrease through wear, damage, repair or disassembly. Treat a used unit’s resistance as uncertain, particularly if it has been damaged or repaired.

Is the Pixel 8 worth buying in 2026?
There is no single current-price verdict: local prices, stock and the condition of individual listings vary, and the cited sources do not establish live 2026 offers. A good purchase depends on the specific phone and seller, not its original launch price. Tom’s Guide’s $699 figure was the US launch price in 2023 and is historical context, not a current recommendation.

- Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint., Etc.
- Compare the full offer. Check the asking price, condition, included items, seller reputation and return or warranty terms for that exact listing. Distinguish new, refurbished and used stock.
- Calculate support remaining. Verify Google’s current update information and account for the original US Google Store availability date. Your purchase date does not restart the seven-year period.
- Inspect the individual battery and handset. Ask for available battery-health information, check for visible damage and test the device where possible. Do not use the original capacity specification as a proxy for present condition.
- Match the cameras to your needs. The main and ultrawide cameras suit buyers who do not require a dedicated optical telephoto lens.
- Consider workload and size. Its compact design may be a plus, while buyers who prioritize flagship-level performance should weigh Tom’s Guide’s performance caveat.
- Confirm local compatibility. For an imported or refurbished unit, verify regional compatibility and the seller’s terms rather than assuming every listing is equivalent.
If the price is attractive for the phone’s condition and support remaining—and you value a compact design, smooth display and capable camera software—the Pixel 8 may still suit you. If the battery is weak, support remaining is too short for your plans, you need optical zoom or you want top-tier performance, look elsewhere. Compare alternatives on those same criteria and check live local prices rather than relying on launch-era pricing.
