Its main trade-offs are limited zoom reach, performance that falls behind the fastest phones, and battery life that depends on how you use it. In 2026, the key buying question is whether the phone’s current price and condition justify its remaining support period.
Google Pixel 8 pros and cons at a glance
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Compact 6.2-inch form compared with many large phones | No dedicated telephoto camera or extended optical zoom |
| Bright OLED display with a smooth 120 Hz refresh rate | Raw performance trails the fastest competing phones |
| Strong main camera, plus Macro Focus on the ultrawide | Some advanced camera controls and Night Sight video are Pro-only in this generation |
| Seven years of OS upgrades, security updates and Feature Drops, counted from first availability on the US Google Store | Battery estimates depend on special power-saving conditions; everyday runtime varies |
| Smaller, easier-to-handle option than many flagship phones | Value depends on present price, condition, and time left in the update period |
What the Pixel 8 does well
Compact size with a bright, smooth display
Google specifies a 6.2-inch Actua display, measured diagonally as a rectangle. Reviewers valued the phone’s relatively compact form, while Android Central described the screen as brighter than its predecessor and noted its 120 Hz refresh rate. That combination suits people who want fluid scrolling without carrying a larger flagship.

Reliable, approachable camera features
The Pixel 8 pairs an updated main camera with an ultrawide lens that supports Macro Focus. The Guardian praised the main camera, and Android Central assessed the camera experience favorably. Google’s computational photography tools are a particular draw if you want useful results without adjusting many settings.
There are meaningful limits if you want more control or reach: the base Pixel 8 has no dedicated telephoto camera or extended optical zoom. Google lists Pro Controls for the Pixel 8 Pro, and Android Central notes that Night Sight video and manual mode were Pro-only in this generation. Choose the Pro if those capabilities matter more than the smaller size or lower-tier positioning of the base model.

Long software support, with a clock that is already running
Google announced seven years of Android OS upgrades, security updates and regular Feature Drops for the Pixel 8. That period is counted from first availability on the US Google Store, not from the date a later buyer purchases the phone. Google’s October 4, 2023 announcement described the commitment as “seven years of software updates, including Android OS upgrades, security updates and regular Feature Drops.” In 2026, check how much of that period remains rather than treating the original promise as seven fresh years.
Where the Pixel 8 falls short
Zoom is limited compared with the Pro
The main and ultrawide cameras cover everyday photography well, but the lack of a telephoto lens limits distant subjects and flexible optical framing. The Guardian identified the lack of extended optical zoom as a drawback. If zoom photography is a regular need, compare the Pixel 8 with a phone that has a dedicated telephoto camera before deciding.

Not the fastest choice for demanding workloads
The Guardian found the Pixel 8’s raw performance behind the fastest competing phones. That matters most if your priorities include demanding games, sustained heavy workloads or benchmark results; it is less central if your usual tasks are browsing, messaging, photography and streaming.

Google’s “up to 72 hours” estimate depends on Extreme Battery Saver, which disables features including 5G; Google also says actual battery life can be lower. The Guardian described battery life as decent, but that 2023 review does not establish a guaranteed runtime for every user. Expect results to vary with network conditions, settings and workload.

Google specifies wired charging up to 27 W when using its 30 W USB-C charger, which is sold separately. “Up to” is a maximum specification, not a promise that every charging session will reach that rate.

It can make sense if you value a smaller phone, a smooth display and Google’s camera experience, and the seller’s price reflects the handset’s age. It is a weaker choice if you need the longest possible update runway from a new purchase, frequent optical zoom, top-tier gaming performance or a battery-life guarantee.

The US launch price was $699 in October 2023; that historical price is not a guide to what the phone should cost now. Compare the actual local offer against its storage, condition, seller, carrier and region compatibility, and the remaining update period. Google notes that cellular service and band support depend on carrier and region. Review assessments cited here date from 2023, not a new hands-on test.
