The Google Pixel 8 Pro’s strongest reasons to buy are its bright adaptive display, versatile triple-camera system and seven years of software updates. Its launch-era weaknesses were battery endurance, charging speed and sustained performance. In 2026, it makes sense mainly if its price and condition are attractive: the phone launched in 2023, and its original test results are not a measure of how a used device performs today.
What the Pixel 8 Pro offers
Google launched the Pixel 8 Pro in 2023 with Android 14 and its Tensor G3 processor. The large-screen phone has a 6.7-inch Super Actua display and three rear cameras: a 50 MP main camera, a 48 MP ultrawide and a 48 MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom. Google’s official specifications describe the hardware and charging support.

The feature set is aimed at buyers who value Google’s camera and software experience alongside a high-refresh-rate screen. It is less compelling for someone whose first priorities are long battery life, fast charging or sustained heavy workloads.
Pixel 8 Pro pros
Bright, adaptive display
The LTPO OLED screen adjusts its refresh rate from 1 Hz to 120 Hz, balancing smooth motion with lower refresh when the display is static. In its October 2023 review, GSMArena measured 1,600 nits in adaptive brightness and 954 nits in its manual test. Those are reviewer measurements, not Google’s peak-brightness claim, and they are specific to that review’s testing.

Flexible triple-camera setup
The dedicated 5x optical telephoto camera gives the Pixel 8 Pro a useful zoom option beyond its main camera, while autofocus on the ultrawide adds flexibility for close subjects and wider scenes. GSMArena’s launch-era assessment praised the improved ultrawide and telephoto and treated the overall camera as a strength. Results still depend on the scene and the photographer; the review does not establish identical performance in every situation.
Long software support
Google’s current Pixel update policy includes the Pixel 8 Pro for seven years of OS and security updates, measured from the model’s first availability on the US Google Store. Pixel Drops may also bring additional features. Google’s October 2023 announcement said that its seven-year commitment included the latest Android operating system, security updates and ongoing Feature Drops, and described support as extending into 2030.

Pixel-specific software features
Google’s launch materials highlighted editing, calling and other Pixel software features. Availability can depend on region, language and software version. GSMArena noted that many features were unavailable in its region during its review, so check local availability rather than assuming every advertised feature works where you live.

Battery endurance was a launch-era weakness
GSMArena characterized battery life as below average in its 2023 review and said the phone did not materially outlast the smaller Pixel 8 in its contemporary comparison. Its lab results included a 90-hour endurance rating, 16 hours 25 minutes of Wi-Fi browsing and 19 hours 33 minutes of offline video playback. These are results from that outlet’s stated test suite, not a forecast of everyday runtime—especially for a phone whose battery may have aged.

Charging is not especially quick
With Google’s official 30 W charger, GSMArena recorded 1 hour 23 minutes for a full charge in 2023. The phone supports up to 23 W wireless charging with Pixel Stand, while generic Qi pads charge at lower rates, according to the review. Google specifies wired charging with a compatible 30 W USB-C adapter; charging accessories are sold separately.
Sustained performance trails top rivals
GSMArena found Tensor G3 behind the leading phones of its test period in absolute performance and less capable under sustained load. That is a launch-era comparison, not evidence that ordinary tasks are slow or a current ranking against newer devices. Buyers who routinely run demanding games or long workloads should compare current alternatives under those conditions.

Is the Pixel 8 Pro worth buying in 2026?
It can be, if you specifically want its camera setup, display and Google’s long support policy—and the price reflects that it is a 2023 model. Consider the individual device’s battery health, storage, seller, warranty or return terms, and carrier compatibility before buying used or refurbished.
Google’s US refurbished listing displayed a 128 GB Pixel 8 Pro for $649 when accessed on October 4, 2026, with other storage options shown. That is a dated example, not a guaranteed current price, stock level or new-device price. Current new-retail prices across sellers have not been established here. Google’s US launch price was $999, and the phone went on sale October 12, 2023; those figures are historical, not a present-day value guide.

GSMArena compared the phone with contemporaries including the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, reporting longer battery life for those rivals. Since that was a 2023 comparison, use current products and prices when deciding what is best value now. Compare camera rendering, zoom and video, battery endurance, charging, sustained performance, support length, feature availability in your region, size, storage and ecosystem.
