The Pixel 10’s biggest advantages over the Pixel 9 are its Tensor G5 processor, a dedicated 5x telephoto camera, a brighter display and built-in Qi2 magnets for magnetic wireless charging. Its battery is larger on paper, but independent tests disagree about whether it lasts longer. That makes the Pixel 10 a more meaningful upgrade for people who want better zoom or magnetic accessories than for every Pixel 9 owner.
What changes from Pixel 9 to Pixel 10?
Google’s Pixel 10 keeps the Pixel 9’s 6.3-inch screen size and 60–120 Hz refresh range, but changes several important parts of the phone. The clearest differences are a newer processor, an added telephoto camera, higher display brightness and built-in magnetic support for Qi2 accessories. Battery capacity also rises, although that does not settle the question of real-world battery life.

1. Tensor G5 replaces Tensor G4
The Pixel 10 moves to Google’s Tensor G5, replacing the Pixel 9’s Tensor G4. Google says G5 is made using TSMC’s 3 nm process and claims up to 60% more powerful TPU performance and a 34% faster average CPU. In its benchmark testing, Tom’s Guide also found higher CPU and graphics scores for the Pixel 10 than for the Pixel 9, while noting that some competing phones scored higher. The practical case for the newer chip is therefore a newer generation of processing and more headroom for Google’s on-device AI features, rather than a promise of a specific speedup in everyday use. 2. A dedicated 5x telephoto camera adds real zoom reach
The standard Pixel 10 adds a camera the Pixel 9 does not have: a dedicated 10.8 MP 5x telephoto lens. Google lists the Pixel 10’s other rear cameras as a 48 MP wide camera and a 13 MP ultrawide, and describes Super Zoom up to 20x. This is an upgrade in camera range, not a blanket increase in resolution: the listed main and ultrawide megapixel counts are lower on Pixel 10 than on Pixel 9. The strongest reason to prefer the newer camera system is having a dedicated telephoto option for distant subjects, along with newer AI-assisted camera features—not assuming every photo will be sharper.

3. The display is brighter, with the same size and refresh range
Both phones have a 6.3-inch display with a 60–120 Hz refresh range. Tom’s Guide reports manufacturer peak-brightness ratings of 3,000 nits for Pixel 10 and 2,700 nits for Pixel 9. In its own light-meter testing, the publication measured 2,330 nits for Pixel 10 and 1,769 nits for Pixel 9. The rated peaks and test readings are different kinds of figures; the latter are results from Tom’s Guide’s 2025 test, not a universal brightness reading for every viewing condition. The brighter screen can make the Pixel 10 easier to see outdoors, while the unchanged screen size and refresh range mean this is an improvement in visibility rather than a larger or smoother display.

4. Pixelsnap adds built-in Qi2 magnetic charging
Pixel 10 includes Google’s Pixelsnap magnetic system and supports Qi2-certified wireless charging up to 15 W. Compatible chargers and accessories can align magnetically with the phone, making it easier to attach a charger or stand without relying on a separate magnetic adapter. Pixel 9 supports Qi-certified wireless charging but does not include Pixel 10’s integrated Pixelsnap Qi2 magnets. The compatible charger or accessory is a separate purchase, not something to assume is included with the phone. If considering a case, check that it is explicitly compatible with magnetic accessories; compatibility can vary by case.

5. The battery is bigger, but test results do not establish longer life
Google lists typical battery capacity at 4,970 mAh for Pixel 10 and 4,700 mAh for Pixel 9 in specifications accessed in 2026. Capacity is a specification, not a direct measurement of how long a phone lasts in everyday use. Google’s “24+ hour battery life” is its own estimate under Google’s testing conditions, not a promise of the same result for every person. Is the Pixel 10 worth upgrading from the Pixel 9?
The upgrade is easiest to justify if you regularly want optical telephoto reach or would use Qi2 magnetic charging accessories. The brighter display and newer chip are additional reasons to choose Pixel 10, especially if outdoor visibility or newer on-device AI capabilities matter to you.
If you are happy with the Pixel 9’s camera range and charging setup, the differences may not justify replacing a working phone. Compare the current local prices before deciding: the $799 U.S. price announced for Pixel 10 at its 2025 launch is not a current price quote, and Pixel 9 may be substantially discounted.
