For a quick edit to one video, use the editor opened from Google Photos or your Android gallery; it may be the same Google Photos editor. To combine several clips or photos into a highlight video, use Google Photos’ multi-clip editing and, where available, its Android templates. “Built-in video editor” can mean different things on different phones, so the comparison depends on which app your gallery opens.
Are Google Photos and your phone’s built-in editor actually different?
Not necessarily. Google’s December 2025 announcement describes the redesigned Google Photos editor as the default Android editor for individual video clips. If you tap Edit in your phone’s gallery and land in Google Photos, you are not choosing between two separate editing products—you are opening Google Photos’ editing experience through another route.

If you mean a manufacturer’s own gallery editor, the comparison depends on your phone model and the app it uses. The available information here does not establish that every manufacturer editor has the same tools or workflow. Check the app name shown when you open a clip’s editing controls.

Google says its redesigned editor is faster and easier to use, but that is the company’s product description, not an independent speed comparison. Availability can also vary as features roll out, so the controls visible in your app are the practical check.

What Google Photos can edit
Android
Google’s Android help page documents tools for trimming; stabilization and automatic enhancement; crop, rotate, straighten, and mirror; exposure and color adjustments; filters and effects; text; speed changes; and music. You can save an edited video as a copy.
Google’s requirements vary by tool. On non-Pixel Android devices running Android 9, Google says video editing is not supported. Some crop, straighten, and filter features require Android 6.0 or later and at least 1 GB of RAM. Video adjustments and filters or effects require Android 8.0 or later and at least 3 GB of RAM. iPhone and iPad
Google Photos’ iOS tools include speed changes, trimming, mute, exporting a frame, crop and rotate, adjustments, filters, and effects. Google requires iOS 16 or later; adjustments and effects require at least 3 GB of RAM. Do not assume that every Android tool or rollout is available on iOS. Check Google’s video-editing help for iPhone and iPad for current requirements.

Google’s December 9, 2025 announcement describes a redesigned timeline for multi-clip editing on Android and iOS, intended for shaping highlight videos. It also says individual clips on Android can receive music and text in the redesigned editor.

Templates are a separate Android option described in the announcement: they provide preset music and text, with cuts synchronized to the soundtrack. Google said templates were rolling out on Android, so they may not appear on every device or account at once. The same announcement describes the redesigned tools as available or rolling out; open Google Photos and check the editor rather than assuming a feature has reached your device. A practical way to decide
- Open the video from your gallery. Tap its edit control and note which app opens. If it opens Google Photos, that is the Google Photos editor, even if you started in the gallery.
- For a one-clip edit, use the available individual-clip tools. Look for the specific control you need—such as trim, speed, stabilization, music, or text—rather than choosing based on the app label alone.
- For a video made from several items, start in Google Photos. Look for the highlight-video or multi-clip workflow; on Android, check whether templates are available if you want preset music, text, and soundtrack-timed cuts.
- If a tool is missing, check eligibility before switching apps. Confirm your operating system and device meet Google’s requirements, then check the current help page and app. Rollouts and device restrictions can affect what appears.
Do you need a separate purchase?
No separate hardware purchase is required for the Google Photos editing workflows described here. Google’s cited help pages document editing through the app; they do not say a Google One subscription is required for these video-editing features.
