Check whether your phone and card are eligible
Google’s general app guidance lists Android 9 or later, current Google Play Services, and the current Google Wallet app. For in-store contactless payments, the phone also needs NFC, a screen lock, and Google-required security status. Google says rooted phones and work profiles are unsupported for the app. See Google’s Google Wallet app requirements and tap-to-pay requirements.

Card eligibility is separate from phone compatibility. The card issuer and the particular card product must support Google Wallet in your country or region, and the issuer may require verification. A contactless symbol on a physical card does not by itself mean that card can be added for Google Wallet tap to pay. Check Google’s supported countries and regions and its card setup guidance; your bank can confirm eligibility for your specific card.

Install or open Google Wallet from Google Play and sign in with your Google Account.

In Wallet, tap Add to Wallet, choose Payment card, then New credit or debit card.

Scan the card or enter its details manually, then accept the issuer’s terms.

Complete any verification the issuer requests, such as a code or confirmation in your bank’s app. If Wallet says Finish setup, follow that prompt.

A card appearing in Wallet does not necessarily mean it is ready for in-store contactless payments; the bank and card must be eligible for that use. Google’s card-addition instructions explain the enrollment flow.
Turn on NFC and choose Google Wallet as the default
Enable NFC
Open your Samsung phone’s Settings and search for NFC. Turn NFC on. On Samsung Galaxy devices, a representative route is Settings → Connections → NFC and contactless payments. The setting’s name or location can vary by model and software; Samsung’s Galaxy manual shows that route for a specific model and region, not every Samsung phone. If Settings has no NFC option, check the specifications for your exact model; tap to pay requires NFC.
Set the payment default
In Settings, search for NFC, then look for Contactless payments and Payment default (or a similarly named payment selection). Choose Google Wallet and confirm if prompted. Samsung’s representative route is Settings → Connections → NFC and contactless payments → Contactless payments → Payment, where you select the app. Google’s general Android route is Settings → NFC → Contactless payments → Payment default → Google Wallet → OK. Menu labels differ, so use Settings search if your path is not an exact match. Google notes that the steps may vary by device.

This setting selects the app used for NFC contactless payments; it does not require removing another wallet app from the phone.
Pay at a store

At checkout, look for a contactless-payment symbol or Google Pay mark and make sure the merchant accepts mobile contactless payments.

Unlock your phone and hold it near the payment reader. For the standard tap flow, you do not need to open Wallet first. If the phone asks you to verify your identity, use your screen lock.

Wait for the confirmation, such as a blue check mark. Wallet uses the default card unless you select a different card in the app. Google explains how to change the default card.

The phone says to turn on NFC, or NFC is missing
Search Settings for NFC and enable it. If no NFC setting appears, verify whether your exact Samsung model includes NFC; a phone without NFC cannot make contactless payments through Google Wallet.

Google Wallet is missing from the payment-default list
Open or update Wallet, then search Settings for NFC and revisit Contactless payments or Payment default. On Samsung, check under Connections. The exact menu labels depend on the model and software.
The card cannot be set up or asks you to finish
Complete any in-app setup or issuer verification prompt. Check whether Google Wallet supports your country and exact card, then ask the issuer about enrollment if the card is absent or verification fails. A physical card’s contactless capability does not establish Wallet eligibility.
The phone fails Google’s security checks
In the Play Store, check Settings → About → Play Protect certification. Google says rooted phones, custom ROMs, unlocked bootloaders, developer versions, or modified factory software may fail security requirements for in-store payments. Use software and device settings that meet Google’s requirements rather than trying to bypass them. See Google’s tap-to-pay troubleshooting guidance.
The reader does not register the phone
Unlock the phone, hold it closer to the reader for a few seconds, and try another position. NFC antenna placement varies by phone, so moving the top or middle of the handset near the reader may help.
The terminal or bank declines the payment
Confirm the merchant accepts mobile contactless payments and that the card network is accepted by that terminal. A decline can come from the issuer or the terminal, rather than from the phone’s setup. Contact your bank about a declined transaction or card eligibility; Google says an issuer decline does not mean you were charged. See Google’s troubleshooting steps.
