Google on why you should disable 2G on your Android phone

Google recommends disabling 2G on supported Android phones to block a downgrade path involving false cellular base stations. Emergency calls remain available, but some 2G-dependent coverage and roaming areas may lose service.

Google recommends disabling 2G on supported Android phones because a false cellular base station can trick a device into downgrading to 2G, where an attacker may intercept or inject traffic. Turning off 2G at the radio level prevents ordinary scanning for and connection to 2G networks; Android says emergency calls remain available, though service may be lost in some 2G-dependent coverage or roaming areas.

Why disable 2G on Android?

The concern is not merely that 2G is an older network or that a carrier still operates it. Android’s security documentation explains that an attacker using a false base station may persuade a phone to connect to it instead of a legitimate cellular network, often by downgrading the connection to 2G. The attacker may then intercept or inject traffic. [Android Open Source Project]

A carrier retiring its own 2G service does not by itself eliminate this downgrade path: a phone may still scan for and connect to a false 2G base station. On supported devices, the Android control disables 2G at the radio hardware level, stopping normal 2G scanning and connections. [Android Open Source Project]

How to turn off 2G on Android

Android 12 introduced a modem-level option to disable 2G. The exact setting name and location depend on the phone, Android version, and device support, so these steps are a general guide rather than a guaranteed menu path. [Android Open Source Project]
