Google has started letting people steer their news experience by setting what it calls Preferred Sources for Top Stories. The goal is simple: show more of what you want, and less of what you don’t—without you having to micromanage every headline.
This guide covers exactly where the setting lives, how to add or remove sources, and what to try when the option doesn’t show up or your feed doesn’t change right away.

What Preferred Sources for Top Stories means
Preferred Sources is a personalization control inside Google’s Top Stories experience. Instead of relying only on your general activity, Google can weight stories from the outlets you explicitly pick as “preferred.”

Why this feature matters (and what it doesn’t change)
When personalization is working, you get faster context: the outlets you trust show up earlier, and you spend less time scrolling past irrelevant or repetitive coverage.
That said, Preferred Sources doesn’t guarantee a fixed ranking. Top Stories is still a dynamic system that considers freshness, location, and broader relevance signals. You should treat this as “stronger preference,” not a permanent override.
Prerequisites before you start
- Sign in to the Google account you use for news personalization.
- Use the Google app on mobile (the setting isn’t always exposed the same way in every launcher or embedded feed).
- Have Location Services enabled if you want local coverage to remain consistent with your preferences.
- Be ready to wait a short period for changes to propagate (often within hours, sometimes longer depending on how your feed is cached).
Set Preferred Sources on Android (Google app)
Follow these steps in the Google app. Labels can vary slightly by region and app version, but the path is typically consistent.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Google on your Android phone.
- Tap your profile icon (usually top-right).
- Go to Settings.
- Look for News or Google News settings.
- Select Preferred Sources.
- Search for an outlet name, then tap Add.
- Repeat until your preferred list is complete.
- Close the settings screen and check Top Stories from your home feed.
Set Preferred Sources on iPhone and iPad (Google app)
The iOS flow is very similar. If you don’t see the menu on first attempt, verify you’re signed into the correct Google account.
- Open the Google app on iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Tap Settings.
- Choose News or Google News.
- Select Preferred Sources.
- Use the Search field to find an outlet.
- Tap Add to include it.
- Check Top Stories to confirm your feed updates over time.
Set Preferred Sources on the web
Web controls can be more limited depending on where you’re viewing Top Stories (for example, Google News vs. a general feed). If you’re missing the setting on desktop, use the mobile Google app as the most reliable option.

- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Go to Google News on your browser.
- Sign in with your Google account.
- Open Settings (often via a profile icon).
- Find News personalization or Preferred Sources.
- Add outlets using the on-screen search and save changes.
Manage your list: add, remove, and adjust
Your preferred list is meant to be editable. Treat it like a shortlist rather than an exhaustive catalog.
Add another source
Use the Add button inside Preferred Sources and search by publisher name. If you don’t find it, try alternative names (for example, the brand name vs. a domain name).

Open Preferred Sources, locate the outlet, and choose Remove or Delete (wording depends on platform). Changes may take time to show up.
Keep your list focused
A short list of outlets you genuinely read usually produces more consistent results than an overly broad selection.
How Google uses your preferences
Preferred Sources is one signal among many. Even after you pick publishers, Top Stories can still show other outlets for major breaking news, local events, or topics you haven’t engaged with recently.

Expect the feed to improve gradually: your selections influence ranking and recommendation weighting, but the system also needs new interactions and time to update models tied to your account.

What to do if the option is missing
If you can’t find Preferred Sources in the Google app settings, don’t assume it’s gone—distribution can be staggered by account, region, and app build.
- Confirm you’re signed in: go to profile and check the account email.
- Update the Google app from the Play Store or App Store, then reopen the app.
- Check News settings carefully: sometimes the toggle is nested under Google News rather than general Settings.
- Use the same platform for both setup and testing (start on mobile first, then check again on web).
- Clear stale state: log out/in or force close the app if the settings UI looks frozen or incomplete.
When preferred sources don’t seem to change your feed
If nothing changes after you add outlets, try these in order.
- Wait for propagation: test over 24–48 hours. News feeds are cached and updated on schedules.
- Use feedback signals: when a story appears, use in-app feedback controls (for example, “Not interested” for repetitive topics) to reinforce your intent.
- Check topic coverage: Preferred Sources works best for outlets you want across multiple topics, not just one story category.
- Verify location: if you turned off Location Services, local sourcing can change and reduce the impact of your preferences.
- Reduce conflicting personalization: if you previously hid or downvoted many outlets, those signals can counteract your “preferred” list.
If you still see no change, it may be that your account hasn’t been fully granted the feature. In that case, the fastest workaround is using Google News publisher follow controls (where available) until Preferred Sources appears.
Privacy and control details to understand
Preferred Sources is user-controlled. You’re not just watching a recommendation engine—you’re providing explicit direction about which publishers you want to see more often.

Still, it doesn’t mean your entire browsing history is publicly visible or permanently frozen. Google’s standard personalization policies apply: the feature uses your account context and activity signals to rank content.
If you want more control, review Google account activity settings and data controls for personalization and ad personalization as applicable to your account.
Alternatives if you want tighter control
Preferred Sources is one layer. Depending on what you’re trying to fix—too many sports results, too little tech, too much local politics—one of these controls may fit better.
- Follow publishers in Google News (if available in your region): often affects how frequently an outlet shows up.
- Topic controls: adjust interests so the feed has fewer off-topic categories.
- Feedback on stories: use “Not interested” or similar options to reduce repeat exposure.
- Search-based tuning: if you frequently search for a topic in Google, your Top Stories can gradually reflect that intent.
Common mistakes
- Adding too many sources: a long list can dilute the effect and make outcomes feel random.
- Assuming instant changes: feed ranking updates aren’t always immediate due to caching and model refresh cycles.
- Not testing with the same feed: switching between Google News surfaces (or different devices) can make it look like the setting failed.
- Using different accounts: if you have multiple Google accounts, it’s easy to set Preferred Sources on the wrong one.
FAQs
Is Preferred Sources the same as following a publisher?
Not always. Following a publisher can bias what shows up more often, while Preferred Sources is specifically a preference signal for Top Stories ranking. Availability and exact behavior can vary by surface.
Will this stop Google from showing other outlets?
No. Top Stories still covers major events across many publishers. Your preferred sources are meant to appear more often, not be the only publishers shown.

Does it work on both mobile and desktop?
Usually the preference you set will apply across surfaces, but some controls are easiest to manage on the Google app. If desktop lacks the UI, configure on mobile first.
What if I remove a source—does it immediately stop appearing?
Often it improves over time rather than instantly. Cached feed content and ranking refresh cycles can take hours to a couple of days.
Can I prefer a smaller site that doesn’t show up in search?
Try alternative names (brand name vs. domain). If it still doesn’t appear, that outlet may not be supported in the Preferred Sources picker in your region or it may not map to a recognizable entity in Google’s system.

Bottom Line
Preferred Sources for Top Stories gives you direct, account-level control over which outlets Google should favor when building your feed. It’s most effective when you keep a focused list and give the feed time to update.
If you don’t see the option or nothing changes, verify your account, update the Google app, and use story feedback to reinforce what you actually want to read.
