Google Messages is the strongest general-purpose choice if you want RCS features and eligible encrypted chats alongside SMS/MMS fallback. Alternatives such as Textra and Pulse SMS may suit you better if customization or cross-device text access matters more. Your contacts’ app and service support, your privacy needs, and your phone ecosystem all affect what you actually gain.
What changes when you choose a messaging app?
An Android texting app can handle ordinary carrier texts—SMS and MMS—and may also support richer internet-based messaging such as RCS. Those are different services, not interchangeable app features. RCS requires compatible apps and devices, service support, and appropriate settings; when a conversation falls back to SMS or MMS, the richer functions may disappear.

Google describes RCS as supporting high-quality photo and video sharing, typing indicators, read receipts, and richer group chats. iPhone users can enable RCS where their carrier supports it. The actual features available in a conversation depend on both participants and their systems.
Google Messages: the broadest feature set for compatible chats
Google Messages combines SMS/MMS with RCS and is the most practical default for people who want Google’s current Android messaging path. When RCS is available, compatible conversations can offer richer media, read receipts, typing indicators, and group functions. Google also supports using Messages across a phone, tablet, web browser, and supported wearables, although setup and capabilities vary by device.

Encryption depends on the conversation
Do not assume every message in Google Messages is end-to-end encrypted. Google says eligible RCS conversations between Google Messages users are encrypted by default; SMS/MMS messages are not. Look for the lock icon in the conversation to check its encryption status. If RCS or data access is lost and the conversation downgrades to SMS/MMS, end-to-end encryption no longer applies. Google also documents key verification for supported RCS conversations in its encryption help.
Cross-platform RCS encryption is a conditional rollout, not a guarantee for every Android-to-iPhone conversation. Google’s May 11, 2026 announcement said end-to-end encrypted RCS began rolling out in beta for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers, and for Android users on the latest Google Messages. Google said encryption would turn on over time for new and existing conversations on compatible devices. Check the lock indicator rather than relying on the fact that a chat uses RCS.

Reach and fallback
SMS/MMS fallback is useful when a contact cannot use RCS, but it is more basic and does not carry RCS’s encryption or full feature set. The app you choose cannot make ordinary carrier SMS/MMS end-to-end encrypted. Google’s end-to-end encryption explanation describes the lock icon and what happens when an RCS conversation falls back.

| App or option | What it may suit | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Google Messages | RCS features, eligible encrypted chats, and integration with Google’s Android messaging ecosystem. | Features depend on RCS availability and the other participant. SMS/MMS fallback is not end-to-end encrypted. |
| Textra | Customization and SMS-oriented controls. | Android Central’s July 28, 2026 editorial overview lists per-contact settings, scheduled SMS, and quick replies. These are editorially reported features, not comparative test results. The source does not establish Google Messages-equivalent RCS encryption. |
| Pulse SMS | Customization and access to texts across devices. | Android Central’s July 28, 2026 overview describes these strengths. It does not establish Google Messages-equivalent RCS encryption. |
| Signal | People who want a dedicated secure-messenger option for contacts who also use it. | Signal is a separate messaging service, not an SMS replacement in the cited 2026 discussion: that reader describes looking for a default app for non-Signal texting after Signal ended SMS support. |
Textra and Pulse SMS are worth considering if customization is the deciding factor. Their reported strengths should not be mistaken for evidence that carrier SMS is encrypted or that these apps provide Google Messages’ RCS encryption. Android Central’s comparison is an editorial overview, not a hands-on performance study.

What US Galaxy owners need to know about Samsung Messages
For many US Galaxy owners, Samsung Messages is no longer a practical supported default. Samsung’s discontinuation notice applies to the US and exempts devices running Android 11 or lower. For Android 12 or higher, Samsung says support ends starting in July 2026 and identifies July 6, 2026, as the cutoff for sending messages. Samsung recommends switching the default to Google Messages. These dates and scope are specific to Samsung’s US notice; they do not establish a global discontinuation.
Samsung says conversations transfer automatically when users switch, but a large message history may take up to about 24 hours to complete. On pre-2022 Galaxy devices, RCS may pause temporarily and resume when both people use Google Messages. SMS/MMS remains available. Samsung also says the change affects continuity with tablets and older Tizen watches: those watches lose full conversation history but can still send and read texts. See Samsung’s US discontinuation page and its support guidance for the applicable device details.

Choose based on how you actually text
- Choose Google Messages if you want RCS where your contacts and services support it, eligible encrypted conversations, and a default aligned with Google’s Android ecosystem.
- Consider Textra if customization and SMS-specific controls such as per-contact settings or scheduled texts matter more than an established Google Messages-style RCS encryption experience.
- Consider Pulse SMS if customization and cross-device text access are priorities.
- Use Signal for Signal conversations when both sides use it and you want a dedicated secure messenger; keep a separate default for ordinary carrier texts.
- Check the actual chat state when encryption matters: in Google Messages, look for the lock icon. A familiar app name or an RCS label alone is not proof that a particular message is end-to-end encrypted.
Google reported that 2.5 billion RCS messages were sent daily on average over the 28 days preceding its May 12, 2026, Android update announcement. That is Google’s own measured-and-reported figure, not an independent industry count, and it does not mean every contact or carrier supports every RCS feature.
