Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Google Messages has been testing a redesign of RCS read receipts. If you’re in the rollout, you might notice changes in how read status appears, when it updates, or how clearly it communicates “seen” behavior between two RCS-enabled contacts.
Read receipts sound simple, but they’re sensitive to RCS registration state, device permissions, app versions, and even the other person’s settings. This guide covers what the redesign likely changes, how to check whether you have it, and how to make RCS read receipts work reliably—or opt out when you prefer.
What Google Messages is testing with RCS read receipts redesign
RCS (Rich Communication Services) read receipts are the “seen/read” indicators that appear in supported chats. In Google Messages, a redesign test usually focuses on how that status is displayed and refreshed—often with clearer timing and fewer ambiguous states.
Because this is a test/rollout, behavior can differ by account, device, carrier, and the versions of Google Messages and supporting services installed on your phone.

Why read receipts matter (and where they can go wrong)
Read receipts reduce uncertainty: you can tell whether your message has been opened, not just delivered. But they can also create misunderstandings when updates lag, a recipient temporarily can’t connect to RCS, or the conversation falls back to SMS/MMS.
In practical terms, the “redesign” may aim to make those edge cases more obvious—so you don’t assume a message was read when it was only delivered, or when it was sent via SMS instead of RCS.
Prerequisites: ensure your device and account are eligible
Before chasing UI changes, confirm the basics. RCS features depend on your Google account, device compatibility, and the correct network/service setup.
- Google Messages installed and up to date.
- RCS chat enabled for your phone number.
- Working mobile data or Wi‑Fi (RCS uses internet services).
- Google Play services updated (read receipts rely on background communication).
How to check whether you’re seeing the redesigned read receipts
The fastest way is to look at the read-status behavior in an RCS conversation with someone who also uses RCS. Use controlled tests so you can compare outcomes across messages.
- Open Messages on your phone.
- Start a chat with a contact you’re confident uses RCS on their device.
- Send a message, then have the recipient open the thread.
- Watch for changes in the read indicator (text, icon, placement, or update timing).
- Repeat after 10–30 minutes or after a device restart to see if the indicator refreshes consistently.
If your chat shows delivery but never shows read/seen, you may not be on the redesigned UI—or RCS may not be active for that thread.
Enable, manage, or limit RCS read receipts in Google Messages
Read receipts are tied to RCS chat settings. You can typically enable/disable them, but availability and wording can vary slightly across app versions and Android builds.

Enable RCS chat features
- Open Messages (Google Messages).
- Tap your profile icon or tap ⋮ (menu), then choose Messages settings.
- Select Chat features.
- Find Enable chat features (or similar wording) and turn it on.
- Wait for registration to complete. You may see a status like “Connecting…” or “Verified.”
Control read receipts (and related visibility settings)
In the same Chat features area, look for read receipts or visibility options. Names can differ by version, but commonly include something like “Read receipts.”
- Go to Messages > Messages settings > Chat features.
- Locate Read receipts.
- Toggle read receipts On if you want “seen” indicators.
- Toggle read receipts Off if you prefer not to send read status.
- If available, review any additional controls related to chat behavior and confirmations.
If you turn read receipts off, your messages may still deliver via RCS, but the other person won’t get read confirmation from you.

Your read receipts depend on both ends. If the recipient has RCS disabled, switched back to SMS, or turned off read receipts, you won’t see the redesigned “seen” state.
- Confirm the recipient is using Google Messages with Chat features enabled.
- Ask them to check Read receipts toggle in their Messages settings.
- Test with one message first, then send another after the recipient opens the thread.
What the redesigned experience might look like (typical scenarios)
Because this is a test, the exact visuals differ. But you’ll usually see changes in one or more of these areas.
When the recipient opens the chat
You may see a more consistent update for “read/seen” and less mismatch between “delivered” and “read.” Some rollouts also reduce ambiguous timing (for example, read status updating only after the app is fully active).
In practice, compare timestamps: a read indicator that updates sooner or later than before is a common sign you’re seeing a redesigned flow.

When the recipient hasn’t enabled RCS
If the recipient’s phone can’t use RCS for that conversation, you may only see delivery confirmations typical of SMS/MMS. The redesigned UI won’t magically appear if the chat isn’t using RCS.
When the recipient uses a different phone or app
If the recipient switches devices or uses another messaging app that doesn’t support RCS read receipts, the “seen” behavior may stop. RCS status is conversation-based and depends on what the recipient’s setup supports at that moment.
When mobile data or background permissions are restricted
Read receipts may not update reliably if Google Messages (or related services) can’t run in the background. Battery optimization and strict app background restrictions are frequent culprits.
Troubleshooting: redesigned RCS read receipts not showing
If you don’t see the read status you expect, work through the checks below in order. Most fixes boil down to confirming RCS connectivity and refreshing the chat feature registration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConfirm you’re using RCS (not SMS/MMS)
- Open the chat with the contact.
- Send a new message.
- Look for indicators that suggest RCS chat is active (often in the conversation UI or via chat feature status).
- If the chat is falling back to SMS/MMS, read receipts won’t behave like RCS.
Refresh your RCS registration
- Open Messages > Messages settings > Chat features.
- Turn Enable chat features Off.
- Wait 30–60 seconds.
- Turn Enable chat features back On.
- Wait for verification/connection to finish.
After re-activation, test with one message and observe whether read receipts return.
Check permissions and battery restrictions
On Android, aggressive battery settings can stop background connectivity needed for status updates.

- Go to Settings > Battery (or Battery & device care depending on brand).
- Find Battery optimization or App power management.
- Set Messages (and if available, Google Play services) to Not optimized or Unrestricted.
- Restart the phone.
Update Google Messages and Google Play services
- Open Google Play.
- Search for Google Messages and update it.
- Update Google Play services if an update is available.
- Optional but helpful: update the Google app and Android System WebView.
Version mismatches can cause read receipt UI and behavior to desync, especially during rollouts.
Log out and back in (last resort)
If chat features are stuck on “Connecting” or read receipts never update across multiple contacts, a full account refresh may help.
- Restart the phone first.
- Then re-check Chat features status.
- If it still fails, remove and re-add your Google account on the device or follow the in-app guidance if available.
This is disruptive, so do it only after the simpler steps.
Privacy and limits: what you can and can’t control
When read receipts are enabled, the app signals “read” status. If you disable read receipts, you typically prevent your device from sending read status, but you may still receive read receipts from others if they allow it.
Also note that read receipts don’t always mean “actively read at this second.” Depending on device state, messages can be marked read when the conversation is opened and the system processes the event.

| Service | Common read indicator | Reliability factors |
|---|---|---|
| RCS (Google Messages) | Read/seen status (when enabled) | RCS registration, app version, background permissions |
| SMS/MMS | Usually only delivered (no true read) | No internet session; limited status support |
| iMessage (Apple) | Read receipts when enabled | iOS/iPadOS settings and whether contact uses iMessage |
| Read receipts (blue ticks) and “last seen” | End-to-end service state, privacy toggles, connection quality | |
| Telegram | Read status (“seen”) varies by chat type | Cloud sync and chat mode; bots/channels differ |
If your main concern is “seeing” updates that behave predictably, test in a small group first—rollouts change UI and timing, not the fundamental messaging behavior.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a redesign means RCS is active. If the conversation is on SMS/MMS, you won’t get RCS read behavior.
- Testing with the wrong account state. If your contact is switching phones or devices, results will vary.
- Ignoring battery restrictions. If Messages can’t run background tasks, read indicators often stall.
- Not updating supporting apps. Skipping Google Play services updates can break status updates.
- Changing multiple settings at once. Change one variable, then retest so you can actually identify the cause.
FAQs
Is the RCS read receipt redesign available to everyone?
No. Rollouts typically land in waves, and availability can depend on account flags, device/carrier behavior, and the Google Messages version you’re running.
Why do I see delivery but not read/seen?
Common causes include: RCS not active for that contact, read receipts disabled on one side, poor connectivity, or Messages/background restrictions preventing status updates.
Can I stop sending read receipts but still get them from others?
Often yes, by toggling read receipts off in Google Messages chat features. However, behavior can vary with account configuration and rollout changes, so verify by testing with a trusted contact.
Will the redesign show different behavior if the other person is on iPhone?
It depends on whether their messages are delivered via RCS (to an RCS-capable recipient) or via another channel. For iPhone users, read receipts may follow iMessage rules instead of RCS rules.
Does turning read receipts off disable chat features entirely?
Usually no. You should still be able to use RCS messaging; you’re just preventing your device from sending read status.
What’s the quickest fix when read receipts stop working?
First confirm the chat is using RCS, then toggle chat features off/on and update Google Messages and Google Play services. If it’s still broken, check battery optimization settings.
Bottom Line
Google Messages testing a RCS read receipts redesign is mostly about improving how “seen” status is shown and updated during RCS chats. Whether you notice it (and whether it works consistently) depends on your RCS registration, app/service versions, and the other person’s settings.
If read receipts aren’t appearing, confirm RCS is active, refresh chat feature registration, remove background restrictions, and update Google Messages and Google Play services. That combination fixes the vast majority of rollout hiccups.
