Google Messages is rolling out a new profile experience called Your profile, letting you customize how you appear with a name and picture.
If you’ve been sending messages for years with just a phone number, this makes your presence more personal and helps people recognize you faster—especially in group chats and contact cards.

What Google Messages Your profile does
Your profile is a Google Messages feature that ties a lightweight identity (typically your chosen name and picture) to your messaging presence.
When enabled and supported, your contacts may see your chosen profile details inside Google Messages UI elements such as conversation headers and contact cards.

Why this change matters
People recognize faces and consistent names faster than numbers. That’s the real value here: fewer “Is this you?” moments, especially when you communicate with multiple people from the same phone.
- Better recognition: your picture and name can show in more places than just the contact app.
- More consistency: you can control how you appear without manually editing every contact entry.
- Improved onboarding: for new chats, your identity is clearer from the start.
Prerequisites and what you need
You’ll need a recent version of the Google Messages app on Android. Feature rollouts are staged, so availability can differ by device, region, and carrier.
- Device: Android phone with Google Messages installed.
- App: Update Google Messages from the Google Play Store.
- Rollout: “Your profile” may not appear immediately even after updating.
- Account: Ensure your Google account is active on the phone.
There’s no single guaranteed Android version requirement because Google can enable features server-side. If your app is current, you’ll have the best odds.

Once the feature is available to your device, the steps are straightforward. The exact wording can vary slightly by version, but the flow usually stays the same.
Check your app version and enable updates
- Open Google Play Store.
- Search for Google Messages.
- Tap Update if you see it. If you don’t, you may already be on the latest version.
- Optional: enable Auto-update so future rollout toggles arrive without manual work.
Open Your profile
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile icon (often in the top-right) or open Settings from the menu.
- Look for a menu item named Your profile (or a similarly labeled profile customization screen).
If you do not see Your profile, jump to the troubleshooting section below—staged rollout is the most common reason.
Set or change your name
- In Your profile, select Name (or tap the name field).
- Type the name you want contacts to see.
- Tap Save or Done (the button label depends on your version).
Keep it short and consistent. Some UI surfaces show limited text space, so longer names may truncate.
Set or change your picture
- In Your profile, select Picture (or Profile photo).
- Choose one option (the exact wording varies): Camera, Choose from photos, or Gallery.
- Pick an image with a clear subject. Square or portrait photos usually look best.
- Crop/confirm when prompted.
- Tap Save or Done.
If the app requests permissions, allow Photos and videos (or the corresponding storage permission) so uploads work.

Review what contacts see
After saving, open a recent conversation to check what appears in the header or contact card UI. Then start a new chat with a test contact if you want to verify the “first impression” experience.
If your recipient uses Google Messages on their side, they’re more likely to see the profile details in compatible UI surfaces.
If you do not see Your profile yet
Rollouts often happen in waves. Even if your Google Messages app is updated, Your profile may take a few days (or longer) to show up on your device.
Verify Google Messages is updated
- Open Play Store → Google Messages.
- Confirm you’re on the newest available build.
- Restart your phone after updating to reduce stale UI caching.
Wait for staged rollout
Google frequently enables features gradually across accounts and regions. If you still don’t see the option after an update, waiting is often the only fix.

Clear app cache (safe steps)
This usually fixes missing UI elements without deleting your messages.
- Go to Settings on your Android phone.
- Tap Apps (or App management).
- Select Google Messages.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Reopen Google Messages and check again for Your profile.
Sign out/in Google account (when relevant)
If Google Messages profile features are tied to your Google account, signing out and back in can refresh permissions and server-side toggles.

Common issues and troubleshooting
When things don’t work, the cause is usually one of three buckets: app not fully updated, profile syncing not completed yet, or image/permission problems.
Your picture upload fails
Try these in order:
- Confirm permissions: Settings → Apps → Google Messages → Permissions → allow Photos and videos / storage access.
- Try another image: use a smaller file or a well-lit portrait photo.
- Switch networks: test on Wi‑Fi, then on mobile data.
- Clear cache: Settings → Apps → Google Messages → Storage → Clear cache.
Your changes do not show up
That can happen when sync hasn’t finished or the feature is still rolling out.
- Wait a short period (often a few minutes) after saving.
- Force-close the app and reopen it.
- Check for additional Play Store updates.
- Reboot the phone.
If you still see old details after a day, use the cache clearing steps again and verify your profile page still shows your updated name/picture.
Name/picture looks wrong on some devices
Contacts may see different versions depending on the app they use, how their messages client renders profile identity, and whether it supports the profile UI surfaces you’re expecting.
So if one person sees your new picture and another sees the default, that’s usually compatibility rather than a failure on your side.
You see a blank or default profile
This is commonly caused by one of the following:
- Your picture never saved successfully.
- The feature is partially rolled out, so your device falls back to a default state.
- Permissions were denied, preventing access to the image source.
Revisit Your profile, confirm the name and picture fields show the correct values, and retake or reselect the image if needed.

Privacy and data considerations
Profile customization usually changes what other users can see in certain messaging contexts. Treat it like any other public-facing profile element.
What might be stored and shared
While the exact backend behavior isn’t always visible to users, profile settings generally involve uploading and associating a photo and display name with your messaging identity. That means your chosen picture can be requested or shown by compatible clients.
Controls you should review
- App permissions: ensure you only grant access you’re comfortable with (photos/media is the main one).
- Profile settings: revisit Your profile anytime to change or remove the picture.
- Contact-level behavior: your recipients might still rely on their own saved contacts rather than your messaging profile.
Alternatives and related options
Depending on what you’re trying to fix—recognition for a specific person vs. your overall messaging identity—there may be alternatives.
Customize your profile in Google Account (where applicable)
In some Google ecosystems, your Google Account photo and name may influence what appears in various apps. If you want broad consistency, update your Google profile in your account settings and then return to Google Messages to confirm Your profile reflects your choices.
Use contact-level naming instead
If a specific contact is not seeing your profile details the way you expect, editing their entry in your phone contacts can still solve the recognition problem locally on your device.
This won’t change how they see you, but it can improve how you experience conversations.
FAQ
Does Your profile work with SMS and RCS?
Google Messages supports both SMS and RCS. Profile identity features are most likely to appear in RCS-capable or Google Messages-specific UI surfaces. If a conversation falls back to plain SMS behavior, you may see less profile rendering.

Will my profile picture show to everyone I message?
It should show to contacts in compatible messaging UI elements. If someone’s device/app doesn’t support the profile experience, they may not see the same picture/name presentation.
Can I remove my picture and go back to default?
When available, you can typically change the picture back to a default state by reopening Your profile and choosing the remove/default option (wording varies by version). If you can’t find removal, setting a new picture will still override the previous one.
Why do I see Your profile on one phone but not another?
Feature rollouts are staged and can be tied to the app build and account/device state. Make sure both phones are updated, then check again for the Your profile entry in Google Messages.

How long does it take for changes to propagate?
Often it’s near-instant after you save, but real-world propagation can take minutes to longer depending on sync and rollout flags. If it hasn’t updated within 24 hours, clear cache and verify the app is up to date.
Bottom Line
Your profile in Google Messages gives you direct control over how you present in conversations by customizing a name and picture. Once the toggle appears on your device, it’s a quick setup.
If you don’t see it yet, update Google Messages, clear cache, and be patient—staged rollouts are the norm for this kind of feature release.
