If RCS chats in Google Messages are stuck on “Connecting,” show “Trouble connecting. Awaiting retry…,” or fall back to text messages, check the RCS status before changing settings. The status helps distinguish a number-verification problem from carrier or regional unavailability; a message labeled “Text message” may simply be using SMS/MMS instead of RCS.
Check RCS status in Google Messages first
Open Google Messages, tap your profile icon, then go to Messages settings > RCS chats. Read the status shown there: it may say connected, connecting, or indicate that RCS is not supported by your carrier. Google says RCS availability depends on the device, carrier, and region, so an unsupported status is a reason to check service availability—not proof that the phone is broken. Google’s RCS troubleshooting guide lists the relevant status messages and checks.
Try Google’s basic connection checks
- Update Google Messages. Open the app’s Play Store listing and install an available update.
- Make Google Messages the default SMS app. Confirm it is selected as the phone’s default messaging app.
- Check dual-SIM settings, if applicable. Google advises that the Call SIM should be configured as the Data SIM.
These are Google’s initial troubleshooting steps; they do not guarantee that RCS will connect if the carrier, line, or region does not support it.
If RCS is stuck on “Connecting” or retrying
Google Messages may show “Connecting” while verifying your phone number. Google says that if “Trouble connecting. Awaiting retry…” remains for more than 30 minutes, the app is having trouble verifying the number. The phone must be able to receive SMS for verification.

- If you see “Verify your number,” follow the prompt and check that incoming SMS works.
- If the verification prompt is missing or following it does not resolve the problem, Google directs users to submit feedback from within the app.
- If you recently moved your number to a new carrier, confirm that number porting is complete before continuing to change settings.
Confirm whether a message is using RCS or SMS/MMS
RCS uses an internet connection over Wi-Fi or mobile data. SMS and MMS are delivered through the mobile operator. In Google Messages, check the compose bar: “RCS message” indicates RCS, while “Text message” indicates SMS or MMS. Google Messages can fall back to SMS or MMS when data is unavailable or the recipient is offline; the RCS settings include a control for automatic resend.
For RCS, Google documents a timer while a message is sending, one check for sent, two checks for delivered, and a filled double check for read. Those status icons do not appear for SMS/MMS.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What the security indicators mean
Google says conversations among Google Messages users are automatically upgraded to end-to-end encryption when all participants use Google Messages with RCS turned on. An encrypted conversation displays an RCS chat banner and a lock icon on the send button. Do not assume a conversation is end-to-end encrypted if it falls back to SMS/MMS or is an RCS conversation with an iPhone user. Google says its RCS service uses TLS when end-to-end encryption is unavailable; TLS is not the same as end-to-end encryption.

Android Central reported on August 19, 2026, that some Galaxy users experienced Google Messages RCS failures after transferring data with Samsung Smart Switch; some saw error 3100. The report said Google attributed the issue potentially to corrupted cache files transferred during Smart Switch. This is a reported subset of cases, not an established explanation for every RCS failure.

- Update Google Messages.
- Turn RCS chats off in Google Messages settings.
- Clear Carrier Services data.
- Restart the phone.
- Turn RCS chats back on.
Android Central reported that these steps did not work for everyone. Some users resorted to a factory reset, but that is a drastic step and is not guaranteed to fix the issue. Read the report on the Galaxy Smart Switch cases before treating this as relevant to your situation.
When to contact your carrier or Google
- Carrier unsupported status: Ask your carrier whether RCS is currently available for your specific line, plan, and region.
- Verification still failing: Confirm that the phone can receive SMS and that any number port is complete. If Google Messages offers no verification prompt or the prompt fails, use the app’s feedback option.
- Message-level fallback: Check whether the compose bar says “Text message” and whether Wi-Fi or mobile data is working; that identifies the current sending path, though it does not by itself explain why RCS is unavailable.
The cited public material does not establish a live carrier outage for any particular reader, so an outage should be confirmed with the carrier for the affected line and location.

Why a widespread service does not mean every connection will work
Google said in a May 13, 2025 blog post that more than one billion RCS messages were sent each day in the U.S., measured as an average over the prior 28 days. That is a dated, company-reported usage figure—not an independently audited statistic, a current message count, or evidence that RCS is available on every carrier or line. Google’s 2025 RCS announcement provides the context for that figure.
