Reports and staged rollouts have started showing Samsung phones where Google Messages becomes the default messaging app instead of the Samsung-branded Messages app. If you’ve noticed the icon change, different chat features, or a new default prompt, this guide explains what’s happening and how to control it.
This is mostly about SMS/MMS app selection and RCS (Rich Communication Services) behavior. The good news: you can usually confirm, keep, or switch away—while avoiding the most common “why did my notifications change?” problems.

What it means that Google Messages is now Samsung’s default messaging app
When an Android phone treats an app as the default SMS app, it’s the app Android launches for sending and receiving texts (SMS) and multimedia messages (MMS). On some Samsung devices, Android/One UI can be updated so that Google Messages is selected by default.
Practically, that means:
- New texts open in Google Messages, not the Samsung Messages app.
- RCS/Chat features (when supported by your carrier and region) are managed inside Google Messages.
- Notification styles and grouping can change slightly, depending on the two apps’ settings.
Why Samsung would default to Google Messages
Samsung benefits when the default messaging experience matches what many users already expect on Android—especially for RCS. Google Messages is widely used, supports modern chat features, and has consistent behavior across devices.

You’ll also see fewer “which app should I use for SMS?” conflicts when one app handles both legacy texts and RCS-enhanced communication. For many carriers, this can mean more reliable chat activation and message delivery behavior.
Before you change anything: what to check on your phone
Before you start flipping settings, confirm a few basics so troubleshooting is faster if something feels off.
- Your One UI version: On some devices, the path is slightly different in One UI 5/6.
- Carrier and region: RCS availability depends on the carrier and where you live.
- Whether you use backup: Google Messages can rely on Google account backup behaviors; Samsung Messages may use Samsung cloud or device-local approaches depending on your setup.
- Multiple SIMs: Dual SIM setups can complicate defaults if you’re switching per-SIM behavior.
How to confirm Google Messages is set as the default SMS app
On a Samsung phone, you can verify the current SMS default from One UI settings.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps.
- Tap Choose default apps.
- Select Messages (or SMS app, depending on your software).
- Check whether Google Messages is selected.
If it already shows Google Messages, you don’t need to change anything—you can focus on notifications, RCS activation, and any history expectations.
How to set Google Messages to be default (manual steps)
If your device didn’t switch cleanly or you accidentally changed defaults, set Google Messages back as the primary SMS handler.

After switching, open Google Messages once and check that you can send a test message to yourself or a friend. If SMS works but RCS doesn’t, see the RCS section below.
How to switch back to Samsung Messages (if you prefer it)
If you want the Samsung-branded app as your default, you can usually revert in the same settings area.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Go to Settings > Apps.
- Open Choose default apps.
- Tap Messages (or SMS app).
- Select Samsung Messages (the app name may appear as Messages with the Samsung icon).
RCS and Chat features: what changes for most people
For many users, the most noticeable change isn’t the SMS default—it’s the RCS experience. Google Messages typically controls Chat features like read receipts, typing indicators, higher-quality media, and message presence when RCS is active.
Common scenarios:
- RCS turns on automatically after switching (best case).
- RCS shows as off until you verify carrier support.
- Some contacts flip between SMS and RCS if activation is inconsistent across devices/networks.
Check RCS status inside Google Messages
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile picture or three-dot menu (varies by version).
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Chat features (or a similar label).
- Confirm whether Enable chat features is available and enabled.
If you see an option to verify or “learn more,” complete the prompts using your current SIM and network.
Carrier and network issues that can block RCS
If RCS won’t activate, it’s often not the default app itself—it’s provisioning and connectivity.

Backup, restore, and message history: what to expect
SMS history and chat logs can behave differently depending on which features were active and which backup method you use.

- Old SMS/MMS threads may still appear when you open Google Messages, but in some cases you might see them only after a short sync window.
- If you moved from Samsung Messages recently, the first few launches can feel slow while the system reconciles the thread database.
- RCS history is tied to the app and account provisioning. If RCS was previously active in Samsung Messages, it may require reactivation in Google Messages to fully restore “chat” status.
If you recently switched devices, also verify your Google account sign-in on the messaging app and keep the phone connected to Wi‑Fi for a while.
Notifications and message handling: common gotchas
Even if message delivery works, notification behavior can change after switching defaults. That’s usually due to notification settings, not missing texts.
Confirm notification settings in both apps
- Open Settings.
- Go to Notifications > App notifications.
- Find Google Messages and ensure notifications are allowed.
- Check Sound, Vibration, and Pop on screen (labels vary).
- Optionally disable Samsung Messages notifications to avoid duplicates, if both are enabled.
Don’t miss “conversations” and “spam” filtering behavior
Google Messages may categorize messages differently (for example, spam filtering or “other” categories). If you’ve noticed missing messages, check those categories inside the app.
Troubleshooting when something breaks
If Google Messages is now your default and you experience errors, handle it systematically. Most fixes fall into permissions, network/RCS activation, or cache/database refresh.

1) Standard SMS not sending
- Verify you have cellular signal and the SIM can send SMS.
- Restart the phone.
- Open Google Messages and confirm Chat features won’t block basic SMS (if there’s a “try SMS instead” state, allow it).
- Update Google Messages from the Play Store or Galaxy Store.
2) Messages arrive late or notifications are missing
- Check Settings > Battery > Battery usage for restrictions on Google Messages.
- Ensure the app isn’t placed into Sleeping or Never sleeping incorrectly (One UI labels vary).
- Confirm notification permissions are enabled for Google Messages.
3) RCS shows off or won’t verify
- Open Google Messages > Settings > Chat features.
- Ensure your mobile data is working.
- Toggle airplane mode.
- If you recently changed SIMs, wait for carrier provisioning to complete and retry verification after a few hours.
4) Threads look duplicated or missing after switching defaults
- Wait 5–15 minutes with the app closed and then reopen Google Messages.
- Make sure both message apps are up to date.
- If it persists, restart and check for system updates in Settings > Software update.
If the issue is severe, you may need to clear app cache. Do not clear storage unless you understand the consequence (it can remove local app data and temporarily disrupt syncing).
Cache refresh (safer option)
- Settings > Apps > Google Messages.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Reopen Google Messages and test sending an SMS.
Google Messages vs Samsung Messages: practical differences
Both apps can send SMS/MMS. The differences mainly show up in chat features, interface, and how you manage categories.
| Category | Google Messages | Samsung Messages |
|---|---|---|
| RCS/Chat features | Commonly handles RCS Chat features with a Google-style settings flow | May use its own RCS implementation and settings UI |
| Notification and categorization | Often includes “spam”/filtered categories depending on region | May present categories and banners differently |
| Consistency across Android | Matches experiences seen on many Android devices | More tightly integrated with Samsung’s ecosystem and UI patterns |
| Default app control | Simple to set as default in One UI default apps | Selectable, but availability can vary by build |
Which should you choose?
- Choose Google Messages if you want the most consistent RCS experience across devices and frequent updates.
- Choose Samsung Messages if you prefer Samsung’s layout, notification styling, or you’re already used to its workflow.
FAQ
Did my messages get deleted when Google Messages became the default?
Usually no. Changing the default app should not delete your SMS/MMS history. If threads look missing, give it a short sync window and verify you’re signed into the correct account on the messaging app.
Will my RCS contacts still chat using RCS after the switch?
Often yes, but not always. RCS depends on provisioning, carrier support, and app-side verification. If it doesn’t turn back on, enable Chat features in Google Messages and try airplane mode + network toggles.
Can I use both apps at the same time?
You can install both, but Android typically routes sending/receiving through the default SMS app. Using both can cause notification duplication or confusion, so it’s usually best to keep only one app fully active for SMS.

Why do I see different notification sounds now?
Each app has its own notification channels and settings. Check One UI notification settings for Google Messages, and confirm notification sound and categories haven’t changed.
My phone doesn’t show Samsung Messages in default app choices. What now?
Update the Samsung Messages app if available, then revisit Settings > Apps > Choose default apps. Some builds restrict default SMS switching if the system has bundled messaging differently.
Final Thoughts
If Google Messages has become your Samsung default, treat it like a system-level change to your SMS/RCS “front door,” not a sign your texts are going away. The real wins are usually better chat/RCS behavior and more consistent Android messaging UI.
