Short answer: Google Messages is not connecting directly to WhatsApp. The “sharing” is a comparison: Google is making RCS chats feel more like WhatsApp, while Google Messages and supported iPhones gain richer cross-platform features. WhatsApp has announced its own, separate opt-in third-party-chat system for users in Europe.
What Google Messages is actually adding
Google Messages uses Rich Communication Services (RCS) to go beyond the limits of SMS. When everyone in a conversation has RCS chats enabled, the app can provide high-resolution photo and video sharing, typing indicators, read receipts, emoji reactions, richer group conversations and customizable chat settings.

Those capabilities are similar to the experience people associate with WhatsApp, but they are delivered through RCS rather than through WhatsApp’s servers or app. A conversation can fall back to SMS or MMS when RCS is unavailable, and the richer tools will not work for every participant unless the necessary RCS support is active.

No. A Google Messages conversation and a WhatsApp conversation remain separate. You cannot enter a WhatsApp phone number in Google Messages and expect a WhatsApp chat to appear, and WhatsApp users do not automatically become RCS contacts.

The confusion comes from two developments happening at the same time. Google Messages is adding WhatsApp-like interaction to RCS, including reactions and read receipts. Separately, WhatsApp announced on November 14, 2025, that users in Europe would be able to opt in to third-party chats with eligible services under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. That program is a WhatsApp feature, not proof of a Google Messages-to-WhatsApp connection.
RCS between Android phones and iPhones
On May 11, 2026, Google and Apple announced a beta rollout of end-to-end encrypted RCS for supported cross-platform conversations. The initial conditions are specific:

Availability can therefore differ by carrier, country, device, app version and rollout stage. An iPhone showing the RCS option does not necessarily mean that every Android contact can immediately use encrypted RCS with it.
What end-to-end encryption means here
Google says eligible encrypted messages cannot be read by Google or other third parties while they travel between the sender’s phone and the recipient’s phone. The protection applies to eligible RCS messages; it is not a blanket guarantee for every message sent from Google Messages.

Check the conversation’s encryption indicator in the app. If the indicator is absent, or if the chat has switched to SMS or MMS, do not assume that the message has the same end-to-end encryption protection.

How to turn on Google Messages RCS
- Install the latest available version of Google Messages from the Android app store.
- Open Google Messages and tap your profile picture or account menu.
- Open Messages settings, then choose RCS chats (the wording can vary by app version).
- Turn on RCS chats and wait for the status to show that the service is connected or available.
- Ask the other participants to enable RCS as well. Read receipts, typing indicators, reactions and other interactive features require RCS support on both sides.
- Start or reopen the conversation and look for the RCS or encryption indicator before sending sensitive information.
If the RCS setting is missing or remains disconnected, update the app and check the phone’s mobile-data or Wi-Fi connection. Carrier support, number verification and regional availability can still prevent activation.

WhatsApp’s November 14, 2025 announcement describes an opt-in system for users in Europe to exchange messages with eligible third-party services under the Digital Markets Act. The announced content types include text messages, images, voice messages, videos and files.

What to expect in practice
- Android to Android: RCS features are generally available when both users have compatible Google Messages setups and RCS enabled.
- Android to iPhone: Rich RCS features depend on the iPhone’s iOS version, carrier support, rollout status and the Android user’s Messages version. End-to-end encryption is available only for eligible conversations.
- RCS to SMS fallback: If a participant or network does not support RCS, the chat may lose reactions, typing indicators, read receipts and high-resolution media behavior.
- WhatsApp contact: Continue using WhatsApp for a WhatsApp conversation; Google Messages does not replace that app or import its chats.
The Bottom Line
Google Messages is adopting more of the interaction people expect from WhatsApp, and encrypted RCS is beginning to extend across supported Android phones and iPhones. That is a user-experience convergence, not direct Google Messages–WhatsApp messaging. Enable RCS on both sides, keep the apps and iPhone updated, and verify the encryption indicator for each conversation.
