Google Messages can sometimes replace or update contact photos, and the change is often tied to a feature called Profile Discovery. When it’s on, Messages may display a photo sourced from your contact’s Google account or profile signals rather than your locally saved contact photo.
If you’ve noticed that a friend’s picture suddenly changes after an update, a sync event, or a time delay, this guide walks you through what’s happening and how to regain control.

Profile Discovery is a Google Messages feature that helps the app show a person’s most relevant profile information. That can include a profile photo, even if your phone’s Contacts app has a different image stored for the same person.

In practice, it means Google Messages may prefer an online/profile-associated image over a purely local one—especially when it can match a contact to an account identity.
Why contact photos change
Photos can change for several reasons. The most common causes are photo-source switching and timing/sync differences between Contacts, your Google account, and Messages.
1) Different photo sources (local vs profile)
Your Contacts app stores a photo locally or synced from a specific provider. Profile Discovery may temporarily or permanently swap the displayed photo to a profile-derived image when it detects a match.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →2) Contact matching and identity resolution
Messages tries to match phone numbers to identities. If the same number exists in multiple places (Contacts, Google profile, an app account), Messages may choose a different “best match” and show a different photo.
3) Delayed sync after updates
After a Google Messages update, a Play Services update, or a device/account sync, Messages may refresh its mapping. That refresh can trigger photo changes minutes or even hours later.
4) Photo replaced upstream
If the contact changed their Google profile photo or a linked account photo, Profile Discovery can cause Messages to reflect that new image.
Check your Google Messages settings
The fastest way to stop photo switching is usually to disable Profile Discovery (or turn off the related option) inside Google Messages.

- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile icon or More (often three dots) in the top-right corner.

Verify after changes
- Close and reopen Google Messages.
- Wait a few minutes for the UI to refresh.
- Open the affected conversation and confirm the photo stays stable.
Confirm the account and photo source
Even with Profile Discovery off, photo differences can remain if your Contacts photo is coming from a synced source you didn’t expect.
Check which Google account syncs contacts
- Open your phone Settings.
- Go to Accounts (or Accounts & sync).
- Select your Google account.
- Confirm Contacts sync is enabled.
If you have multiple Google accounts (work, personal), Messages may show a photo based on whichever account it matched during discovery.
Confirm the contact’s stored photo
- Open the Contacts app.
- Open the affected contact.
- Confirm the photo displayed there matches what you want.
- If needed, edit the contact photo and save.
If Contacts keeps changing the photo after you set it, the issue is likely a sync/provider mismatch—not only Messages.
Android contacts and photo providers
On Android, contact photos can come from multiple providers, including your Google account, device local storage, Exchange/Work profiles, or third-party integrations.
How to spot the provider issue
- If the photo changes after a sync, it’s probably coming from a cloud provider (often Google or work Exchange).
- If the photo “sticks” when you edit it and then stops changing, your local edit is likely controlling the display.
- If the photo keeps reverting, check whether the contact is linked to an account you don’t fully control.
How to reduce mismatches
- Merge duplicate contact entries carefully (duplicate phone numbers can create matching conflicts).
- Keep a single canonical contact record for the phone number you text most.
- Avoid storing the “same person” across multiple unrelated accounts unless you want blended display behavior.
Common scenarios and the fastest fixes
The photo changes right after you update Messages
This usually indicates Profile Discovery or contact matching refreshed. Turn Profile discovery off in Google Messages settings, then reopen Messages and wait a few minutes.
If the photo still flips, clear Messages cache (steps below) and confirm Contacts sync settings for your Google account.
You prefer the photo you manually set in Contacts
Disable Profile discovery and ensure the contact photo in Contacts app matches your preference. If Contacts is synced, make sure the synced account isn’t overwriting your manual photo later.
A specific contact only changes, not everyone
That points to contact matching differences for one number. Check that the phone number is saved consistently (same format, no duplicates) and that you’re editing the correct contact entry.

- Includes one Nest Wifi Point. Nest Wifi points are designed to expand your existing Wi-Fi network and require a Nest Wifi router (sold separately).
- Nest Wifi is a scalable and flexible Wi-Fi system. These Nest Wifi devices work together to blanket your whole home in fast, reliable Wi-Fi and eliminate buffering in every room – adding coverage of up to 1600 square feet per point.[1,2]
- 1 Wi-Fi router (required, sold separately) plugs into your internet provider’s modem to create your Wi-Fi network. Each point extends the wireless network and keeps your connection fast to devices in every room.[1]
- Each Nest Wifi router and point is strong enough to handle up to 100 connected devices, and fast enough to stream multiple 4K videos at a time.[3] Compatible with Google Wifi.
- Each Nest Wifi point is also a smart speaker with Google Assistant built in (internet connection required). You can play music, manage your Wi‑Fi network, find answers, control your connected devices, and more using your voice.[4]
If multiple entries exist, remove duplicates or consolidate fields so Messages doesn’t pick a different match.
Photos change for group chats differently than 1:1 chats
Group chat participants often update as Messages resolves each participant identity. Disabling Profile discovery typically stabilizes it, but you may need to allow time for the UI cache to refresh.
Troubleshooting when photos still change
If you turn off Profile discovery and photos still change, it’s usually one of: caching, a competing sync source, or incomplete disabling due to UI differences.

1) Clear Google Messages cache (safe)
- Open Settings → Apps.
- Find and open Google Messages.
- Tap Storage → Clear cache.
- Reopen Messages and check the conversation.
Clearing cache won’t delete your SMS/MMS, but it can refresh the UI state and photo rendering.
2) Clear Google Contacts storage (only if needed)
If your contacts photo is also unstable, you may need to refresh the Contacts provider cache.
- Open Settings → Apps.
- Find Contacts (or the Contacts app used on your device).
- Tap Storage → Clear cache.
Don’t clear app data unless you’re comfortable reloading contact UI state; cache clearing is the safer first step.
3) Force a sync
- Open Settings → Accounts.
- Select the relevant Google account.
- Tap Sync now.
- Wait for sync to finish, then open Messages.
This helps confirm whether changes are coming from cloud updates rather than Profile Discovery itself.

- Open Settings → Apps → Google Messages.

- Enable Contacts permission.
5) Watch for number formatting / duplicates
Messages often matches phone numbers exactly as stored. Check the contact for duplicates or alternate saved formats.
- Open the contact.
- Verify the number appears once and is formatted consistently.
- If there are duplicates, remove extras or merge entries.
6) If the app setting isn’t available
Some Android builds and Google Messages versions may show different settings labels. If you can’t find Profile discovery:
- Confirm you’re using the latest Google Messages version from the Play Store.
- Update Google Play services (under Play Store) since identity matching features rely on it.
- Check whether the option appears under Privacy or Advanced in Messages settings.
Privacy and what to expect
Profile Discovery affects which photo Messages uses. Disabling it generally means Messages will rely more on what’s stored locally (or synced via Contacts) for display.
Be aware that you can still see photo changes if your Contacts photo changes due to account sync or if the contact’s Google profile changes and you later re-enable discovery.
Alternatives and workarounds
If you need guaranteed stability for contact photos, you can control the input source rather than only the Messages feature.
Use a single canonical contact record
Create/keep one contact entry per person, tied to the photo you want. If you sync from multiple sources, prefer one account for that person.
Avoid duplicate numbers
Two contact entries with the same number can lead to identity switching, which looks exactly like photo changes even if Profile Discovery is off.
Use the Contacts app photo as the “source of truth”
Edit the contact photo in Contacts and ensure the synced provider isn’t overwriting it. If it’s a work/Exchange account, your admin may control the photo upstream.

FAQ
Where is Profile discovery located in Google Messages?
In most Android builds it appears under Messages settings. The exact label may vary, but search within Settings for profile or discovery.
If I turn it off, will it stop all photo changes?
It typically stops Messages from switching to profile-derived photos, but it won’t prevent changes caused by Contacts sync, duplicates, or upstream provider photo updates.
Why does only one person’s photo keep changing?
That person likely matches multiple identity sources (duplicates, different accounts, or different stored number formats). Consolidating the contact record usually fixes it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWill turning off Profile discovery affect message delivery?
No. This setting only affects how contact/profile info is displayed in Messages, not SMS/MMS delivery.
Does this happen after reinstalling Google Messages?
Yes, reinstallation can reset cached identity/photo mappings. If you want stable photos, disable Profile discovery again and then clear cache if needed.
Final Thoughts
When Google Messages changes contact photos with Profile Discovery, the app is typically showing a photo from a different identity source than your local Contacts entry. The most reliable control point is disabling Profile discovery, then ensuring your Contacts photo comes from the provider you actually want.
If the problem persists, focus on caches, contact duplicates, and sync behavior—those are the usual reasons a setting change doesn’t immediately “stick.”
