Google Messages is rolling out chat themes that let you change an individual conversation’s background and coordinated bubble colors. You can choose a preset or use a photo from your gallery. The change is personal to your device: the other person in the conversation does not see your chosen background. The feature was described as rolling out in September 2026, so it may not be available to every user yet.
What Google Messages chat themes change
A chat theme changes how a conversation looks in your Google Messages app, including its background and bubble colors. You can pick from preset themes or choose a photo from your gallery and pair it with a color combination. Google’s product page lists conversation backgrounds, bubbles, colors, and themes among Messages’ customization features: Google Messages features.

The choice is local to you. Android Central reports that applying a background does not change what the other participant sees on their phone. It personalizes your view rather than changing the shared content or sending a theme to the other person.

Who can use chat themes, and when?
Android Central reported on September 1, 2026 that chat themes were rolling out as part of the September Android Drop, following an announcement in the Google Messages Community. That establishes a rollout, not availability on every Android phone. The report does not give a complete device, app-version, carrier, or regional eligibility list. Google’s official page says Android users can download Google Messages to an Android phone, but it does not specify a separate eligibility matrix for themes.

- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.
- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.
- CAMERA SYSTEM: Advanced 50MP Quad Pixel camera captures sharp, detailed photos and videos in any lighting condition
- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
Google’s statement that RCS availability varies by region and carrier concerns RCS messaging, not specifically chat-theme access. Those are separate questions: theme availability affects appearance, while RCS availability affects messaging features and interoperability.

Is Google copying an iMessage feature?
The iMessage comparison makes a catchy headline, but the cited coverage establishes that Google added chat themes—not that Google copied a particular Apple feature or that the feature originated with Apple. The practical comparison for users is what each app lets you customize, who can see that customization, and which devices and software versions support it. Do not assume a theme selected in one app will appear the same way in the other.

Chat themes are separate from RCS and Remix
Chat themes change the visual presentation of a conversation. They do not change how messages are delivered or encrypted. Google announced on May 11, 2026 that end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging began rolling out in beta for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and for Android users on the latest Google Messages. Google said cross-platform encryption would be enabled by default over time for new and existing RCS conversations. That rollout is about message privacy, not chat appearance: Google’s RCS encryption announcement.
Chat themes are also different from Google Messages Remix. Google announced Remix on November 11, 2025 as a tool for editing and reimagining photos in a conversation or from the gallery; it changes image content, whereas a theme changes the conversation’s look. Google said Remix availability varies and specified an 18+ age requirement. Details are in Google’s Remix announcement.
