Google Meet’s Material 3 Expressive redesign is designed to be more modern and touch-friendly—and for many people that means larger, more prominent UI controls. If you’re seeing noticeably large buttons, it’s usually a combination of the new design language plus display scaling or browser zoom/font settings.
This guide walks through the most reliable fixes across Chrome on Windows/macOS, plus what you can (and can’t) control on Android and iOS. Follow the steps in order; most “giant button” complaints resolve within a couple minutes.

What the Material 3 Expressive redesign is doing
Material 3 Expressive updates component styling (spacing, shape, emphasis) and often increases minimum touch/click targets for consistency. In practice, that can make buttons look bigger even when your screen hasn’t changed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn top of the redesign, browser zoom, OS display scaling, and accessibility settings can push everything further in the same direction. That’s why two people on different systems can land on very different button sizes.

Quick checks before changing anything
Do these first—they’re fast and prevent you from chasing the wrong cause.
- Confirm it’s not just one browser tab. Refresh the page and open Meet in a new tab.
- Check your zoom. In most browsers, it’s visible in the address bar area (or via
Ctrl+0to reset). - Compare another site. If buttons look oversized everywhere (not just Meet), it’s likely OS scaling or browser font settings.
- Try a different meeting. Rarely, a corrupted cache can “stick” UI scaling for one experience.
Fixes on the web (Chrome, Edge, Firefox)
On desktop, the quickest wins are browser zoom and font/page scaling. These change how Meet is rendered without needing to wait for UI updates.
Adjust browser zoom
If buttons look too large, reduce zoom by one step and re-check Meet controls.
- In Chrome/Edge, open Meet and focus the page.
- Press Ctrl + - (or Ctrl + Plus/- as needed) until buttons look normal.
- If it drifts too far, press Ctrl + 0 to reset to 100%.
On macOS browsers, use Command + - and Command + 0.
Adjust browser font and page scaling
Zoom fixes the whole page. Font/page scaling fixes cases where only text and UI sizing are off.
- Open your browser Settings.
- Go to Appearance.
- Check Font size and set it to Default (or “Medium” depending on the browser).
- For Page zoom, set it back to 100% if it was changed.
- Restart the browser and reload
https://meet.google.com.
Chrome tip: Settings > Appearance > “Page zoom” is separate from font size. If either is altered, Meet may feel oversized.
Reset browser settings (when UI gets stuck)
If Meet looks wrong after a prior experiment (extensions, custom CSS, accessibility toggles), a reset can restore normal defaults.

Fixes on Windows
Windows display scaling is a top cause of oversized UI in web apps. If your buttons look large system-wide, start here.
Reduce display scaling
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Find Scale (example values: 100%, 125%, 150%).
- Set it to 100% or the closest lower option that doesn’t make everything too small.
- Sign out and back in if Windows applies scaling slowly, then reopen Meet.
If you’re on a high-DPI laptop/monitor, try 125% first, then adjust based on readability.
Check accessibility scaling and High Contrast
Windows can enlarge UI elements through accessibility features—even when browser zoom is correct.
- Open Settings > Accessibility.
- Check Text size and set it to 100% or a modest value.
- Check Magnifier (if enabled, it can distort perceived button sizes).
- If you use High Contrast, test with it turned off to see if Meet returns to normal sizing.
Verify Windows UI scale isn’t forcing bigger tap targets
Meet’s redesigned UI uses more generous spacing, so small scaling differences become noticeable. If your mouse cursor appears normal but controls look chunky, try temporarily resetting your browser zoom to 100% and then adjust Windows scale one notch down.
Fixes on macOS (MacBook)
macOS display scaling and accessibility zoom can make Meet controls feel bigger than intended.
Set Display scaling to a smaller option
- Open System Settings > Displays.
- Find Display scaling.
- Choose a more compact option (smaller text/UI).
- Reopen Meet and confirm button sizes.
On Retina displays, macOS sometimes offers “Looks like” scaling percentages. Pick a lower “looks like” value if available.

Check macOS Zoom accessibility settings
- Open System Settings > Accessibility.
- Check Zoom (or Magnification) settings.
- If Zoom is enabled, toggle it off temporarily and test Meet again.
Reset the browser zoom and font size
If macOS scaling is fine but Meet is off, reset the browser first: Command + 0 (zoom), then confirm font size is at default in the browser’s Appearance settings.

Mobile-specific reality: Meet UI is intentionally touch-friendly
On Android and iPhone/iPad, larger buttons are often not a bug—they’re a deliberate usability choice. The Material 3 Expressive approach generally favors bigger controls for quick tapping.
Android and iOS: what you can and can’t control
- You can change system display/text size (which affects Meet).
- You can’t reliably force a smaller Meet layout because the app prioritizes consistent tap targets.
- You may see different sizing depending on device resolution and orientation.
Workarounds using system display settings
- On iPhone/iPad: open Settings > Display & Brightness > Display Zoom and test a lower/standard setting. Then check Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size for text size.
- On Android: open Settings > Display (or Display & brightness) > Display size and reduce it slightly. Then check Font size.
- Reopen Google Meet and verify the in-call controls.
If you’re using iPhone/iPad and the issue started after an iOS update, check whether you changed accessibility text size or display zoom during the update.

If Meet still shows oversized buttons after adjusting zoom and display scaling, try the fixes below. They address the most common “stuck UI” causes.
Try a different browser profile or Incognito window
- Open an Incognito (Chrome/Edge) or Private window.
- Go to
https://meet.google.comand join a test meeting. - If buttons look normal, the issue is likely an extension, cached setting, or profile-specific state.
Disable extensions that alter styles
Extensions that inject custom CSS, ad blockers, dark mode tools, or accessibility overlays can distort UI sizing.
- Open browser extensions.
- Temporarily disable style-altering extensions.
- Reload Meet and compare.
Pay special attention to anything mentioning “custom font,” “UI scale,” “user style,” or “dark reader” type features.
Clear site data for meet.google.com
Clearing site data forces Meet to rebuild its UI state and can fix persistent layout anomalies.

- Choose Clear data (cookies and site data).
- Reload Meet and sign in again if needed.
Test with a different meeting and browser window size
Material redesigns can respond to viewport width. If you typically run Meet in a narrow window (or have split-screen), enlarge the browser window to full width and re-check controls.
Common mistakes that make buttons look even bigger
- Leaving browser zoom below/above 100%. Meet remembers zoom per-tab sometimes, so a single change can persist unexpectedly.
- Stacking scaling effects. Windows 125% + browser zoom 110% can make controls feel comically large.
- Using high accessibility text size. Both OS and browser accessibility can compound.
- Relying on extensions that change typography. Even “dark mode” tools can unintentionally affect layout calculations.

Common FAQs
Is the large-button look a bug?
Often it’s not. Material 3 Expressive commonly increases spacing and touch target size. If your buttons only became large after an OS/browser change, scaling settings are the more likely culprit.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I switch Material 3 Expressive back to the older Google Meet UI?
There’s no standard user setting to revert the overall redesign. Your best options are controlling rendering via zoom/font scaling and ensuring your extensions aren’t altering UI layout.
Why do buttons look normal on one device but not another?
Different screens use different DPI and scaling defaults. Add browser zoom/font settings and accessibility features, and the same Meet UI can appear meaningfully different.
Will lowering display scaling make text too small for me?
It can, so use gradual changes (for example, drop from 150% to 125% instead of jumping to 100%). If readability suffers, consider keeping OS scale and reducing browser zoom instead.
Could extensions be causing the problem even if other websites look fine?
Yes. Some extensions inject CSS that affects interactive elements more heavily on certain sites. Testing in Incognito/private mode is the fastest way to confirm.

Bottom Line
If Google Meet’s Material 3 Expressive redesign makes buttons feel too large, start by resetting browser zoom to 100% and checking browser font/page zoom settings. If it’s still off, adjust OS display scaling (Windows Scale or macOS Display scaling) because that’s where most “oversized UI” problems originate.
On mobile, larger controls are typically intentional for tap usability. Use system display/text size only if you truly need a smaller look, and don’t expect a Meet-only control to override Material 3 Expressive’s design targets.
