It crops excess background, places participants more efficiently and lets you pin up to six tiles instead of three. On Google Meet-certified conference-room hardware, dynamic tiles can also split a shared room camera into individual participants, making hybrid meetings easier to scan.
What changed in Google Meet on Android
Dynamic layouts are a software redesign for large meetings. Google says the system can “prioritize faces by cropping out excess background video,” so each tile gives more of its available space to a person rather than an empty wall or ceiling.

The update addresses visual organization, not meeting capacity. It does not increase the maximum number of people who can join a call. Its benefit is that more of the participants already in the meeting can remain visible and recognizable at once.
Portrait tiles reduce wasted space
Traditional video tiles often preserve a wide camera frame, leaving substantial background around a participant. Dynamic layouts reframe the video around the person’s portrait and arrange tiles to use the available screen more efficiently. That makes it quicker to scan a large call and identify who is present.

You can pin up to six tiles
Google Meet now supports pinning up to six tiles, up from three previously, according to Android Central’s March 29, 2025 report. Pinning keeps selected participants prominent while the rest of the meeting continues around them. This is useful when you need to follow a presenter, moderator, interpreter or several speakers during a panel.
How dynamic tiles work in hybrid conference rooms
The ordinary Android app normally receives one video stream per participant. Meet-certified conference-room hardware can do something different: when several people share one room camera, Meet can create separate dynamic tiles for up to three participants from that single room feed. Google describes the result as an individual video tile for each of those participants.

- ELEVATED EFFICIENCY - Experience the MediaTek Helio G85 processor and 60Hz refresh rate that ensure fluid browsing, responsive gaming, and lag-free streaming.
That means you can pin one person in the room instead of pinning the entire room’s camera feed. It is especially helpful in town halls, classrooms and boardrooms where a wide shot would otherwise make every speaker small.
What ordinary Android devices do
- Android phones and tablets can display the Dynamic layouts experience when it has reached the account and app.
- Portrait cropping and denser placement improve visibility, but they do not turn one camera feed into separate people.
- Room-specific dynamic tiles require Google Meet-certified conference-room hardware at the meeting location.
Rollout dates and who gets the update
Rapid-release Google Workspace domains were scheduled to start receiving Dynamic layouts on March 31, 2025, with up to 15 days for the change to become visible. Scheduled-release domains were slated to start April 17, 2025, with propagation taking up to three weeks.

Android Central reported the feature for both paid Workspace accounts and personal accounts. Actual availability can still differ by account, Android device, Meet app version and Google’s staged rollout. If you do not see the new layout, update Meet through Google Play, restart the app and check again later; a missing option does not necessarily indicate a hardware problem.
How to get more people on screen in a big call
- Update Meet. Install the latest available Google Meet version for your Android device.
- Join the meeting normally. Dynamic layouts are selected by Meet as it arranges the participant grid; there is no new phone accessory or special Android model required.
- Choose important participants. Use Meet’s participant-tile controls to pin the people you need to keep visible. You can pin as many as six tiles under the new limit.
- Adjust when the view changes. If the meeting shifts to a presentation or another layout, review your pins and reselect the tiles that matter.
Portrait cropping can remove parts of a person’s surroundings. Google specifically encourages sign-language interpreters to consider whether the feature could crop out arms or hands unintentionally. For interpreting, demonstrations or presentations that depend on a wide frame, a less tightly cropped view may be more appropriate.

Other Android Meet control changes
Dynamic layouts arrived alongside several mobile interface changes, but those changes are separate from the tile technology.
| Feature | Android and iOS change | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Emoji reactions | Moved from the three-dot overflow menu to the bottom bar | Design change; functionality remains the same |
| Raise hand | Moved from the bottom bar to the overflow menu | Design change; functionality remains the same |
| Companion mode | Added for Android and iOS tablets, with rapid rollout beginning June 12, 2025 | Lets a tablet join alongside an in-person meeting, useful for all-hands and town halls |
Google’s August 14, 2024 mobile update also documented screen sharing on Android and iOS, emoji reactions for large group calls, an audio-only mode for people on the move and call transfer between an Android phone and tablet. Google warned that a call can fall back to the legacy calling experience when another participant has not updated.

Dynamic layouts versus the old layout
| Capability | Older Meet layouts | Dynamic layouts |
|---|---|---|
| Tiles you can pin | Up to three | Up to six |
| Use of background space | More unused background may remain | Portrait cropping prioritizes faces |
| People from one room camera | Typically shown as one room feed | Certified room hardware can create separate tiles for up to three participants |
| Participant limit | Existing meeting cap | Unchanged; this is a layout improvement, not a capacity increase |
| Required device | Android client supported | Android client for layouts; certified conference-room hardware only for room-feed separation |
Why large meetings feel less awkward now
In a large call, the problem is often not joining but finding the right face. A wide room shot can make speakers indistinguishable, while a grid full of empty background wastes the screen. Dynamic layouts address both issues by tightening portraits and giving participants more control over which people stay visible.
The improvement is therefore practical rather than dramatic: faster visual scanning, better speaker selection and more useful pinned views. It will not fix poor lighting, an obstructed camera, unstable bandwidth or a meeting that exceeds the display’s practical viewing area.
