For an unexpected closure, Waze explicitly says a driver’s report immediately changes that driver’s route. For planned work, Waze documents a route-exclusion process for closures submitted by approved partners. Google Maps supports construction and lane-closure reports during navigation. Which helps most depends on whether the roadwork is reported or formally submitted—and on the information available locally.
How do Google Maps and Waze handle an unexpected road closure?
Waze: a reported closure can change the reporting driver’s route
Waze says a driver’s road-closure report immediately affects that driver’s route, and the app will avoid the closure. A closure does not necessarily appear for everyone at once: Waze says it shows on the map after other Wazers report it, and it can disappear if Wazers drive on the road. A road may also be closed in one direction but still be routable in the other. See Waze’s road-closure reporting guidance.

Waze asks drivers to report something they see in real time and to make the report near the incident. That makes the feature relevant to a newly encountered blockage, but it does not establish that every closure will be reported or that every route will be correct.

Google Maps: construction and lane-closure reports are supported
Google Maps lets drivers report construction and lane closures during navigation, alongside incidents such as crashes and slowdowns. Google says reports from other users can appear as you approach; audio alerts depend on your alert settings. Some incident-reporting categories are available only in certain countries. Google’s help describes reporting and viewing incidents, but does not make the same closure-specific statement about an immediate reroute for the reporting driver that Waze does. That difference in documentation is not evidence that Google Maps never reroutes around a closure. Details are in Google Maps navigation help.

What about planned roadworks?
Waze has a documented process for planned closures submitted by approved partners. It says it will not route traffic over a road segment marked closed, and that planned closures appear when relevant. Waze publishes processing guidance of one to four minutes for submissions through its Data Feed or Map Editor, and up to two business days for submissions by email. Those are the provider’s stated workflow times, not an independent guarantee that a closure is complete, correct or reflected immediately in every route. See Waze Partners Help on closures.
The Google sources cited here explain traffic and route estimates but do not establish a comparable planned-roadworks submission process. They also do not establish that Google lacks one.

Which app should you use for roadworks?
| Situation | What the documentation establishes | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| A blockage you have just encountered | Waze says a closure report immediately changes the reporting driver’s route; Google Maps supports construction and lane-closure reports but its cited help does not specify an equivalent immediate closure reroute. | Waze has the more explicit documented behavior for the reporting driver. Check the route and signs rather than assuming either app has a complete live picture. |
| Planned closure submitted by an approved organization | Waze documents a partner workflow and says routes will not use segments marked closed. | Waze’s documented workflow is relevant when that partner data is available. The cited Google sources do not support a direct comparison for planned submissions. |
| Roadworks with uncertain or sparse reporting | Neither provider’s cited documentation quantifies local roadwork-report coverage or proves which app routes better. | For a major known closure, compare both apps’ proposed routes before setting off and follow on-road signs. |
Google says its traffic and travel-time estimates draw on anonymous phone location data when collection is enabled, licensed traffic and incident data from partners, past and present location data, and other sources. Waze describes a combination of community reports and partner-submitted closure information. These descriptions explain why data availability matters; they do not show which service has better coverage on a particular road. See Google’s explanation of Maps route data.
Report roadworks safely
- Do not handle your phone while driving. Report only when it is safe, using supported in-car controls where available or after stopping. Google’s guidance says, “Only make a report if it’s safe to do so.”
- For Waze, report only a closure you can see in real time and make the report near it.
- Use the road signs and actual conditions to guide your decisions; app reports can be incomplete or change as other users travel the road.
Keep navigation powered on a long drive
Google says navigation uses the phone’s location, screen and speakers, which drains the battery faster, and recommends a power adapter, especially for trips longer than 30 minutes. This is a battery tip, not a difference in either app’s ability to route around roadworks. See Google Maps battery guidance.
