On February 6, 2020, Google marked Google Maps’ 15th anniversary with a redesigned mobile app, a new location-pin icon and expanded information for public-transit routes. The transit additions included rider-reported details about temperature, accessibility and onboard security, but they were not a universal feed of live vehicle data: Google said the features would roll out from March 2020 and vary by region and transit agency.
What Google announced for Maps’ 15th anniversary
Google’s February 6, 2020 announcement covered three related changes: a new app icon, a five-tab redesign, and more information to help transit passengers compare routes. Google framed the anniversary as part of Maps’ expansion from point-to-point navigation into local discovery and everyday mobility. The announcement is a historical account of that launch; it does not establish which of the 2020 interface or transit features remain available in 2026. Google’s anniversary announcement
A pin-based icon
The refreshed icon kept the familiar location-pin shape. Google said the pin represented Maps’ evolution from helping people get between two points to helping them discover places and experiences. A separate celebratory car icon was also offered for navigation for a limited time.
Five tabs for common tasks
The redesigned app grouped key activities into five tabs:
#1 Best Overall
- City Essence: Each 8x10-inch art print showcases a unique minimalist illustration of major cities across the USA, capturing the distinct charm and character of each location.
- Latitude and Longitude Markings: In addition to stylish city sketches, each print accurately highlights the corresponding city's longitude and latitude, offering enthusiasts a unique geographic perspective.
- High-Quality Unframed Design: Crafted on premium paper, these art prints come unframed, providing you the flexibility to choose the perfect frame to match your interior decor style.
- Perfect Decor Choice: Whether for the living room, bedroom, or office, these art prints are an ideal selection to add a touch of modernity and personalization to your space.
- Unique Gift Idea: For friends and family who love travel, art, or geography, these city-themed art prints make for an exquisite and meaningful gift.
- Explore: Find restaurants, attractions, landmarks and other places, with ratings and reviews. Google said in February 2020 that Explore included information for about 200 million places worldwide.
- Commute: View driving and public-transit commute information, traffic updates, travel times and alternate routes.
- Saved: Keep saved places, trip plans and recommendations together. Google said users had saved more than 6.5 billion places at the time of the announcement.
- Contribute: Add reviews and photos, report missing places or roads, and suggest address corrections.
- Updates: See recommendations and trending places from local experts and publishers, and message businesses.
Google also said more than 1 billion people used Maps to see and explore the world. Those user, place and saved-place figures were Google’s own claims in its February 2020 announcement, not independently audited measurements.
What transit riders could learn from the new details
The new route attributes were intended to help riders weigh comfort, accessibility and other practical concerns alongside journey time. They were based largely on information contributed by people who had taken the trips, and appeared only where supported.
Temperature and crowdedness
Riders could report whether a vehicle generally felt warm or cold. That was a perception, not a standardized temperature reading. Google had already announced predictions of how crowded buses, trains and subways were likely to be, using historical rider data; the anniversary update broadened the types of experience riders could share. Accessibility
Information could cover features such as staffed assistance, accessible entrances and seating, accessible stop buttons, and high-visibility LED displays. A route-level label cannot confirm that every station entrance, elevator, sidewalk, platform and vehicle on a particular journey is accessible at the time of travel. Google had introduced wheelchair-accessible transit routing in selected metropolitan areas in 2018, including London, New York, Tokyo, Mexico City, Boston and Sydney. Carriage counts in Japan
For Japan, Google announced that riders could select routes based on the number of train carriages, a detail that could help someone choose a service with a better chance of finding a seat. Google identified this as a Japan-specific feature, not a global transit option.
Rider reports were not the same as live transit data
The anniversary announcement brought together different kinds of information: transit-agency data, historical patterns, Google’s traffic and routing systems, and feedback from past riders. The new attributes such as perceived temperature and onboard security were principally rider insights. They should not be mistaken for live vehicle locations or official, real-time service alerts.

That described a planned rollout, not a guarantee that every feature would appear in every city at once. Earlier features such as live bus-delay information and crowdedness predictions were separate developments, also dependent on geography and data coverage. How the 2020 transit experience worked
Google’s anniversary announcement did not establish one permanent menu path for every feature. In the rollout described at the time, a rider would generally search for a destination, open Directions, choose public transit and review route details, including rider-provided attributes where available. Google might also offer a short survey or feedback prompt after a trip.
In a later explanation of crowdedness contributions, Google described opening directions, selecting Transit Details, scrolling to crowdedness predictions and submitting an experience when that option was available. That later path concerned crowdedness reporting; it should not be treated as a universal route to every anniversary-era attribute. Labels and availability can differ by app version, operating system, country and transit agency. Google’s later Maps feature explanation

Passenger reports can add context that an agency timetable may not provide, such as how warm a vehicle feels or whether a feature is usable in practice. They also have limits that matter when choosing a route:

- Reports can be subjective or old. A comfort rating reflects a rider’s experience, and a sparse set of reports may not represent current conditions.
- Presence is not a guarantee. A camera or guard report does not certify safety. A prediction of crowding describes expected conditions, not the next vehicle with certainty.
- Accessibility can change along a journey. A line may have accessible vehicles while an entrance or elevator is unavailable, or a station-to-platform connection may not meet a rider’s needs. For an important or time-sensitive trip, check current conditions with the transit agency.
- Coverage varies. Local partnerships and the number of riders contributing information can affect how much detail Maps displays for a city or system.
Later, Google described some station-busyness information as drawing on aggregated and anonymized data from users who had opted into Location History, with privacy thresholds affecting when insights appeared. That later description should not be read as a full technical account of every feature announced in February 2020. Google’s explanation of later Maps features
Why the anniversary changes mattered
The redesign made local discovery, commuting, saved destinations, contributions and recommendations more visible as parts of one app. The transit update applied the same broader idea to route choice: a useful journey comparison can involve more than arrival time, especially when comfort or accessibility matters.
Google’s companion anniversary essay placed the changes in a longer evolution that included live traffic, transit crowdedness, bike-share availability, accessibility information, popular times and multimodal navigation. It also described Live View, which uses Street View imagery, machine learning and phone sensors to guide walking, and the use of machine learning to expand map coverage and identify addresses and businesses in areas with limited formal mapping data. Google’s account of Maps’ evolution
These details explain what Google announced in 2020, not a verified description of the Maps interface or transit coverage in 2026. The original announcement set a rollout direction and named regional qualifications; it does not confirm that the same tabs, labels or rider-reporting options are still present today.
