Chrome 77 began rolling out for desktop on September 10, 2019, with mobile releases following on their own schedules. Its main developer story was a set of tools for measuring what users see, building custom form controls, and experimenting with browser-mediated contact selection. This is a historical release guide, not a recommendation to target Chrome 77 today.

What Chrome 77 changed

Chrome uses milestone releases to deliver browser features and fixes in numbered versions. Chrome 77’s most consequential web-platform additions were Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), the formdata event, form-associated custom elements, and native lazy loading for images and iframes. Contact Picker arrived as an Origin Trial, not a stable, generally available API. Google’s release announcement details these features at New in Chrome 77.

Contemporary coverage also described PerformanceEventTiming as an early way to measure latency for certain discrete interactions. That claim comes from VentureBeat’s account of the release; Google’s Chrome 77 announcement gives its detailed performance treatment to LCP. The early interaction-timing capability should not be confused with later responsiveness metrics such as Interaction to Next Paint.

The initial desktop rollout began September 10, 2019. Contemporary reporting named Windows, macOS, and Linux, as well as Android and iOS, but platform availability did not arrive simultaneously: Android was rolling out gradually, and its full changelog was not yet available when that report was published. Chrome 77 is now a historical, unsupported version; use current browser documentation and compatibility information for production decisions.

How LCP measures loading from the user’s perspective

load and DOMContentLoaded tell developers about document and script-loading milestones, not necessarily when the page’s principal content appears. First Paint and First Contentful Paint describe earlier visual stages, but neither identifies whether the largest, most meaningful content is visible. LCP instead records the render time of the largest content element visible in the viewport, using it as a practical proxy for when the main content has appeared.

The candidate can change while the page loads as larger content becomes visible. For that reason, Chrome’s guidance was to keep the latest observed LCP entry and report it when the document becomes hidden, rather than treating the first entry as final. This example follows the pattern in Google’s Chrome 77 guidance:

let lcp;

const observer = new PerformanceObserver((list) => {
  const entries = list.getEntries();
  const lastEntry = entries[entries.length - 1];

  lcp = lastEntry.renderTime || lastEntry.loadTime;
});

observer.observe({
  type: "largest-contentful-paint",
  buffered: true
});

document.addEventListener("visibilitychange", () => {
  if (document.visibilityState === "hidden" && lcp) {
    sendToAnalytics({ lcp });
    observer.disconnect();
  }
});
  • PerformanceObserver receives performance entries as they are available.
  • buffered: true asks for eligible entries created before the observer was registered as well as subsequent ones.
  • Keeping the newest candidate accounts for the fact that the largest visible element may change during loading.
  • Reporting when the page becomes hidden avoids assuming that the earliest candidate is the final result.

This is a way to collect field measurements, not a synthetic performance score or a guarantee that the page is fast. LCP can be influenced by the viewport, layout, image delivery, and which content is largest. Chrome 77’s implementation and browser support have also changed since 2019, so consult current Web Vitals documentation before building a new measurement system.

What the early interaction-timing report covered

VentureBeat described PerformanceEventTiming as exposing latency for early discrete interactions such as keydown, mousedown, and click, including pointer-down and pointer-up combinations. That offered a way to investigate responsiveness beyond page loading, but it was an early capability, not a measure of every interaction or a finished Core Web Vital. The distinction matters when reading old release coverage: LCP was the metric Google’s announcement documented in depth.

How Chrome 77 made custom forms more practical

Use formdata to serialize custom UI state

Before the formdata event, developers often used hidden inputs to include the state of custom controls in a form submission, or assembled a submission payload themselves. The event fires as the browser constructs form data and exposes the resulting FormData object, which a listener can modify:

const form = document.querySelector("form");

form.addEventListener("formdata", (event) => {
  event.formData.append("my-input", myInputValue);
});

A listener can append, delete, or change entries before the form data is used. This integrates custom state with the normal form-data construction process; it does not replace the submit process, automatically make a widget accessible, or remove the need for server-side validation. A custom control still needs a dependable serialization strategy, and applications supporting browsers without the event need an appropriate fallback. Google’s explanation and example are in New in Chrome 77.

Make a custom element participate in forms

Chrome 77 added support for form-associated custom elements, allowing a custom element to integrate more naturally with form submission and validation than a generic <div>-based widget. A minimal starting point looks like this:

class MyCounter extends HTMLElement {
  static formAssociated = true;

  constructor() {
    super();
    this._internals = this.attachInternals();
    this._value = 0;
  }
}

customElements.define("my-counter", MyCounter);

The formAssociated declaration opts the class into the capability, while attachInternals() provides access to form-related internals. A complete control must still define familiar behavior and state, including its name, value, and validity, as well as handling form association, validation, reset, disabled state, labels, focus, and accessibility. The platform capability is not a finished input component. See Google’s Chrome 77 form guidance.

What the Contact Picker Origin Trial allowed

Chrome 77 offered the Contact Picker API through an Origin Trial. Its intended flow was user-mediated: a site requested use of the picker, the browser displayed its own contact-selection interface, and the site received only the permitted fields for contacts the user selected. It was not a background permission to read a complete address book.

An Origin Trial is a temporary way to experiment with a browser feature; it does not promise that the feature will be standardized or remain available. The Chrome 77 trial is historical and should be treated as expired. Do not rely on old enrollment instructions or trial tokens; current implementations and support status require current documentation. Google’s release overview describes the feature at New in Chrome 77.

When native lazy loading helped

Chrome 77 highlighted the loading="lazy" attribute for deferring off-screen images and iframes until they are closer to the viewport:

<img src="photo.jpg" loading="eager" alt="Description">

<iframe
  src="embedded-content.html"
  loading="eager"
  title="Embedded content">
</iframe>

Deferring below-the-fold media can reduce initial network work, particularly on pages with many images or embeds. Lazy loading is not a substitute for correctly sized, compressed, responsive images. Avoid deferring important above-the-fold content, where delay can make the page feel slower. Iframes may also load ads, analytics, or other third-party resources whose behavior is separate from the attribute. Where browsers without support matter, provide a suitable fallback. Google covered the feature in New in Chrome 77.

What changed in Chrome 77 DevTools

The Chrome 77 DevTools release added visualization for layout shifts and performance information related to LCP. It also included Lighthouse 5.1 in the Audits panel, operating-system theme syncing, prefetch-cache information in the Network panel, and additional JavaScript debugging and Application-panel features. Google’s release notes are at What’s New in DevTools, Chrome 77.

At the time, a historical workflow was to record a page load in the Performance panel, inspect its Timings section for paint and layout-shift events, and use the Audits panel’s Lighthouse report for a broader diagnostic. Those panel labels and workflows describe the 2019 release; DevTools has changed substantially since then, so they are not current UI directions.

Compatibility, security, and removals

Changes developers needed to account for

Chrome 77’s deprecations and removals could affect applications as well as introduce new capabilities:

  • The Payment Request API stopped accepting card issuer network names such as visa, amex, and mastercard in supportedMethods.
  • On insecure origins, Web MIDI permission requests applied regardless of whether sysex access was used.
  • WebVR 1.1 was deprecated in favor of WebXR; removal was expected in a later release.

Google’s detailed notes are in Deprecations and Removals in Chrome 77. These are historical Chrome 77 changes, not a substitute for checking current platform behavior.

Security and enterprise notes

Chrome 77 included site-isolation improvements, including stronger isolation on some Android devices for sites where users entered passwords. VentureBeat reported 52 security fixes for the release; that is a contemporary reported count, not an independently audited inventory of every vulnerability. The same report noted enterprise changes including a BrowserSwitcherExternalGreylistUrl policy, a chrome://browser-switch/internals page, controls for the first-run promotional experience, and a --guest command-line option with policy support for guest browsing.
