Google Maps has started rolling out new AI tools designed to help you create interactive projects—map-based experiences with structured steps, rich points of interest, and guided content you can share. If you’ve ever wanted to turn a few stops into something that feels like a mini guided tour, this is the direction Maps is moving.
The practical shift is that you’re no longer building every detail from scratch. Instead, you describe what you want (a theme, a route, an audience, the tone), and the AI helps generate the interactive elements—then you refine, reorder, and publish.

What Google Maps AI tools for interactive projects mean
An interactive project in Google Maps typically combines multiple map elements into a single experience: a curated set of locations, step-by-step instructions, and interactive callouts (like cards, highlights, or guided prompts) that users can follow.

Why this update matters (and who it’s for)
Google Maps has long been great for finding places. Interactive projects change the focus: from discovery to guided experiences. That matters for planning, teaching, and marketing because it turns a list of locations into a narrative.
- Travel planning: generate a “3-day food crawl” or “rainy-day museums” itinerary with clear pacing.
- Education: build self-guided walking lessons with checkpoints and prompts.
- Local creators: package recurring routes into shareable experiences for followers.
- Businesses: structure customer journeys (arrival → checkout → follow-up) using map context.
Prerequisites before you try it
Availability can be account- and region-dependent, so treat this like a feature that may appear gradually. Before you troubleshoot, verify these basics.
Accounts and permissions
- You need a Google account signed into Google Maps.
- For location-based elements, allow location permissions in your device settings (or only when using the app).
App and platform requirements
- iPhone / iPad: update Google Maps via the App Store and keep iOS current (commonly iOS 17+).
- Android: update Google Maps via Google Play; Android 14 is a safe baseline.
- Web: use a modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari) on a stable connection.
What you should have ready
- A rough list of places (even 3–10 pins) you want included.
- Your goal for the project (audience + tone + length).
- Any constraints: wheelchair access, walking time, budget level, opening hours.
How to create an interactive project with AI in Google Maps (Web)
The web workflow is usually the most forgiving for editing because you can manage content and layout in a larger interface.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Go to
https://maps.google.comand sign in to your Google account. - Open the Explore area or the Maps navigation for new tools (the project creation entry may appear under a Create or New control).
- Select the option to Create or Start a project with AI.
- In the prompt box, describe what you want. Include: destination area, activity type, time window, and audience. Example: “Create a 2-hour family-friendly walking loop in Austin with 7 stops, calm pace, and kid snacks near each location.”
- Review the generated draft (usually a sequence of stops plus guided instructions/cards).
- Edit the project: change stop order, replace a location, adjust instructions, and remove anything inaccurate.
- Check map layers and interaction elements (for example: which stops are highlighted, which steps show guidance text).
- Set privacy/sharing for the project (draft vs published) using the project settings.
- Publish or save as a draft, then test it by opening the project preview as if you were a viewer.
How to create an interactive project with AI in Google Maps (iPhone and iPad)
On iPhone and iPad, the experience is optimized for quick creation and preview. Expect slightly fewer editing controls than the web, but the core flow is similar.
- Open the Google Maps app and sign in.
- Tap your profile or the relevant menu (often the top-right icon) and look for Your contributions, Maps, or a Create entry.
- Choose the feature to Create an AI-assisted interactive project.
- Enter your prompt with the same structure as the web. Keep it specific: number of stops, walking time, and audience needs.
- Confirm the generated draft and swipe through the suggested steps to verify each location makes sense.
- Tap individual steps/cards to edit text, swap pins, or remove stops.
- Preview the experience from the viewer standpoint, then adjust any confusing steps.
- Save as draft or share—use the sharing controls to restrict access if needed.
How to create an interactive project with AI in Google Maps (Android)
Android follows the same logic as iOS: AI creates a draft structure, and you refine the stops and wording. Interface labels can vary by device maker, so use the button text you see.
- Launch the Google Maps app and confirm you’re signed in.
- Open the Maps menu (usually the account icon or hamburger-style navigation).
- Find Create or the AI-assisted project tool.
- Use the prompt field to specify what the interactive project should accomplish. Include: theme, duration, route style (loop/point-to-point), and constraints.
- Review the AI draft: check each suggested stop and the step order.
- Edit content: update the instructions, adjust which highlights appear, and ensure the flow matches real-world travel time.
- Save and preview on the map so you can confirm interactivity works end-to-end.
Designing a strong interactive project: best practices
AI can generate structure quickly, but your job is to make the experience accurate and usable. The best projects read like a plan people can follow.

Write prompts like a project brief
Use a format that removes ambiguity. A good prompt typically includes: destination area, number of stops, timeframe, audience, and pacing.
Recommended Free Tools
- Destination: city neighborhood, park name, or radius (e.g., “within 2 miles of…”).
- Audience: families, solo travelers, accessibility needs.
- Pacing: 60-minute loop vs 3-hour itinerary.
- Style: casual, educational, foodie, history-focused.
Keep steps short and sequential
Interactive elements work best when each step is a single action: “Walk to the viewpoint,” “Order at counter,” “Meet at the entrance.” Avoid mixing multiple tasks into one step.
Validate real-world constraints
Before publishing, sanity-check opening hours, walkability, and distances. AI drafts are fast; they aren’t a substitute for checking that a museum is open on your day.
Use consistent formatting
If the AI gives mixed levels of detail, tighten it. For example, keep a consistent pattern: arrival cue → what to do → where to stand → optional tip.
Privacy, permissions, and sharing controls
Interactive projects are designed to be shareable, but you should treat them like any other location-based content—privacy and access control matter.

Troubleshooting when the AI project tools don’t show up
If you can’t find the AI interactive project option, it’s usually one of four things: rollout timing, app version, account state, or browser constraints.
1) Confirm you’re on the latest Google Maps version
- iPhone/iPad: App Store → Google Maps → Update.
- Android: Play Store → Google Maps → Update.
- Web: refresh and try a different browser (Chrome is the safest default).
2) Sign out and back in
Sometimes feature flags attach to a session. Log out, restart the app/browser, then sign back in.
3) Clear stale app data (Android only)
If Android still won’t show it, you can try clearing cache for Google Maps (do not wipe account data unless you’re comfortable re-signing in).
- Settings → Apps → Google Maps → Storage → Clear cache.
4) Try a different creation path
UI placement can vary. If you can’t find “interactive projects,” look for “Create,” “Your contributions,” or any “new” tool entry near the map tabs.
5) Reduce prompt complexity
When AI generation fails, it can be due to conflicting instructions. Try a shorter prompt: fewer stops, a single neighborhood, and a clear activity type.
Common mistakes that break interactivity
These are the issues that show up in real projects after you publish.

- Overstuffed itineraries: 15+ stops in a short time makes steps feel chaotic.
- Unverified locations: pins that look right on a map but don’t match the on-the-ground entrance.
- Generic instructions: “Check this out” isn’t actionable. Replace with a concrete cue.
- Missing pacing cues: readers need “how long” and “where to go next,” even if approximate.
- Publishing before preview: always use preview to ensure the interactive cards and step order match expectations.
Alternatives and comparisons: My Maps, custom tours, and embeds
Interactive projects aren’t the only way to create guided map experiences. Here’s how the new approach compares to older options.
Google My Maps
My Maps is great for layering points and drawing shapes. It’s still useful when you want full manual control, especially for static layers and custom styling.
- Best for: mapping data, routes you edit yourself, custom overlays.
- Tradeoff: you do the writing and structure work; AI draft generation is the new advantage.
Custom tours via links and itineraries
You can also build an itinerary using notes plus a shared list of places, but it won’t feel as interactive unless you invest in extra tooling.
- Best for: simple sharing and quick coordination.
- Tradeoff: less guidance inside the map experience.
Embeds and third-party map builders
External platforms can offer advanced interactivity, but you typically lose some of Maps’ native context and discovery.
- Best for: complex applications and custom UI.
- Tradeoff: more maintenance and fewer native Maps behaviors.
FAQs
Do I need to be a Google Maps expert to create an interactive project?
No. The whole point of AI-assisted creation is to reduce setup. You still need to review and correct details, but you won’t start from a blank map.
Can I edit the AI-generated itinerary after it creates a draft?
Yes. Treat the AI output as a first draft. Reorder stops, remove incorrect locations, and rewrite instructions so the project matches the real experience.

Why do some projects work for me but not for friends who open the link?
Most link-access issues come down to visibility settings. Confirm whether the project is public, link-shared, or restricted to specific accounts, and test from a separate device/session.
Will the AI include accessibility needs or wheelchair-friendly routing automatically?
Not reliably unless you specify constraints in your prompt. Add explicit requirements (e.g., step-free access, minimal stairs, short distances) and verify each stop before publishing.
How do I keep my project accurate when locations change?
Use preview and spot-check critical stops. If you publish long-term (like seasonal tours), revisit it periodically and update pins and instructions.

Bottom Line
Google Maps’ AI interactive projects are a practical upgrade: they turn ideas into guided map experiences faster than manual pinning ever could. The fastest route to a great result is writing a clear prompt, reviewing the draft carefully, and testing the experience before sharing.
If you take interactivity seriously—tight steps, verified locations, and sensible pacing—you’ll end up with projects people actually follow, not just browse.
