Google Maps on Android has been rolling out a redesign to the directions overview—basically the panel you see while a route is active, showing the route summary and turn-related information. If your screen looks different than it did a few weeks ago, that’s usually why.
This guide walks you through what the redesigned directions overview changes, how to use it confidently, and what to do when the preview panel behaves oddly (missing, out of sync, or hiding at the wrong time).

What changed in the Google Maps directions overview on Android
The redesign centers on the route overview panel during turn-by-turn navigation. You’ll typically notice layout shifts—where controls appear, how turns are previewed, and how much screen space the overview takes.

Where you’ll notice it
- After you tap Start on directions: the overview/route summary often appears in a different shape or position.
- During active navigation: the turn preview and route info may show more compact cards, or a more streamlined panel.
- When you scroll or tap the panel: the expanded view may reveal a slightly different control set (for example, route options and stop-related details).
How it changes the route preview and controls
In many rollouts, Google Maps reduces friction between “check the next move” and “keep driving.” The redesigned overview tends to:

- Make it easier to preview upcoming steps without fully leaving the navigation context.
- Improve access to route options (depending on your app version and region).
Who gets it first (and why timing varies)
Rollouts usually happen in stages based on device model, Android version, and server-side feature flags. That means two people can update Google Maps on the same day and still see different UI for a while.
Prerequisites before you troubleshoot
Before you try fixes, confirm you’re working with the current app build and that your Android location permissions are correct. Most “broken overview” reports come down to app version mismatch or location/background restrictions.
Check your Google Maps version
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Google Maps.
- Open the app listing and check the current version under the store details (or install/confirm the latest update).
After updating, fully reopen Google Maps (close it from the app switcher, then launch again) to ensure the UI refreshes.

- Battery: avoid “restricted” battery states for Google Maps (more in the Android gotchas section).
How to use the redesigned directions overview (step-by-step)
The fastest way to get comfortable is to practice with a short route in a low-stakes area. The redesign is mostly about interaction patterns, not new features.
Start a route and view the overview panel
- Open Google Maps.
- Enter a destination in the search bar.
- Tap Directions (or the blue directions button).
- Confirm your starting location if prompted.
- Tap Start to begin navigation.
Look for the redesigned overview panel where the route summary appears. It may be slightly more compact or positioned differently than older builds.
Preview turns and landmarks without losing navigation
- While navigating, locate the overview panel on the map screen.
- Tap the panel to expand, or swipe/drag it if your build uses that gesture.
- Scroll through the upcoming steps for turn guidance and street context.
If the panel covers the map, tap back so the map recenters. The design is intended to let you preview without stopping guidance.
Change route options during navigation
Depending on your Android and Maps version, the overview panel may expose route controls while you’re en route. If you need a different route:

- Open the directions overview panel by tapping it.
- Look for controls like Route options or alternative route prompts.
- Select constraints such as avoiding tolls/highways if available in your UI.
- Confirm the updated route to resume navigation.
Switch transport mode mid-route
- With navigation active, open the overview panel.
- Use the transport mode selector (commonly labels like Driving, Transit, Walking).
- Choose the new mode and confirm route recalculation.
Some mode switches may take a few seconds to re-render the overview. If it doesn’t update, leave the panel, wait briefly, then tap it again.
Customize what you see during navigation
Some of the most noticeable “UI problems” are really visibility or behavior settings interacting with the redesigned overview.
Navigation voice and volume behavior
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile icon > Settings.
- Go to Navigation settings.
- Check voice settings and ensure spoken instructions are enabled.
If you can’t hear guidance, the overview may look like it’s failing even when it’s functioning properly.
Location accuracy and route stability
The overview often depends on accurate position. If your location is jumpy, turn previews can drift out of sync.
- Enable high-accuracy location where available (GPS/Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth).
- If you’re indoors, step outside for a stable fix.
When the overview hides itself
Some Android skins (Samsung One UI, Pixel launcher behaviors, and gesture navigation) can hide UI panels when the map gets gestures or overlays. If the panel keeps collapsing:
- Try turning off overlays like chat heads or screen recorders.
- Temporarily disable split-screen for Google Maps.
- Use the panel tap instead of long swipes.
Fix common problems after the redesign
If the redesigned directions overview doesn’t work like you expect, use the fixes below in order. They’re the highest success-rate moves on Android.
Directions overview is missing or collapsed
- Exit and restart navigation: stop the route, then start it again from the same starting point.
- Force refresh: close Google Maps completely and relaunch.
- Check permissions: confirm Location permission isn’t revoked.
- Disable battery restrictions: allow Google Maps to run in the background.
If the panel only disappears in a specific area, it could be a temporary navigation/UI rendering glitch tied to connectivity.

Turn list/preview doesn’t match your position
- Pause walking/driving for a moment (or slowly move to an area with better GPS signal).
- Confirm Location accuracy in Android settings.
- Recenter the map by tapping the compass/your location button if available.
- Restart directions so the overview rebuilds.
Also check that you didn’t accidentally enable a different start point (like your saved location).

- Make sure you have a stable GPS fix.
- Check your connection: poor data can cause route refresh inconsistencies.
- Clear any heavy overlays or accessibility services that might interfere with taps.
- Try a different route constraint set (e.g., allow highways if you had “avoid highways” enabled).
Stuck on an old interface despite updating
This can happen because rollouts are staged. If you’re on the latest Play Store build and still don’t see the redesign, it may just not be enabled on your account/device.
- Try updating Google Maps from Play Store (not just a cached install).
- After updating, wait 24–48 hours in case feature flags apply slowly.
- If you join the Google Maps beta, you might see changes earlier (availability varies).
Navigation keeps pausing or not updating
- Go to Android Settings > Apps > Google Maps.
- Open Battery and set it to Unrestricted (wording varies by manufacturer).
- Confirm Background data is allowed.
- Reboot the phone if navigation has been running for a long time with no updates.
Try these alternatives if the overview is unusable
If you can’t get the redesigned panel to behave, you still have options that keep guidance effective while you ride out the UI mismatch.
Use voice-only guidance while keeping the map unobstructed
Minimize panel interaction and rely on spoken turns. If your Android allows it, keep screen brightness and volume settings stable so instructions carry through.
Re-run directions from the same start point
- Tap your navigation controls and choose to stop the route.
- Return to the destination directions screen.
- Confirm the start location is correct.
- Tap Start again.
This forces a fresh overview render and can clear UI state bugs.
Use a different route type or avoid constraints
If the overview shows wrong steps, switch constraints. For example, changing whether you avoid tolls or highways can produce a new path with more consistent step mapping.
Android-specific gotchas to watch
The redesign is the same core app, but Android behavior can change how the panel animates and how easily you can tap or scroll it.

Battery optimization and background limits
Many OEM battery managers (Samsung, Xiaomi/Redmi, OnePlus, etc.) may restrict background updates. When that happens, the overview may lag behind the map position.
- Set Google Maps battery use to Unrestricted.
- Allow background data.
Gesture navigation and screen overlays
Gesture navigation can steal swipe gestures meant for the overview panel. Also, overlays like floating chat heads may intercept taps.
- Temporarily disable floating overlays during navigation.
- Try using two-button navigation mode if gestures conflict on your device.
Split screen and multi-window behavior
In split-screen, the overview panel may render differently or become harder to expand. If you notice this:
- Exit split-screen.
- Open Google Maps full-screen.
- Restart navigation.
Google Maps redesign directions overview vs. older layout
You’ll feel the redesign most when you’re driving and checking the next turn frequently.
Speed of understanding the next turn
The redesign generally aims to reduce the number of taps or panel expansions needed to understand upcoming turns. Instead of hunting across multiple UI elements, the overview emphasizes quick preview.
Access to changes (traffic, alternatives, stops)
Depending on your app build, the redesigned overview may bundle controls more tightly. That can make route changes faster—but can also mean the controls are harder to find if you’re used to the older layout.
Clarity vs. clutter trade-offs
Some users prefer a more compact overview; others want the older “more visible detail” look. If the panel feels too busy, try minimizing expanded views and relying on voice cues until you’re comfortable.

FAQs
Why do I see different directions overview layouts on the same route?
Google Maps UI rollouts are server-side. Your device, app build, and feature flags can differ from someone else, even on the same route and the same day.
Can I turn off the new redesigned directions overview?
Usually, there’s no direct toggle for a specific UI redesign. The closest workaround is updating to the latest version, or temporarily using voice guidance and minimizing panel interactions until the interface becomes stable on your device.
Is this redesign only for driving directions?
It mainly affects the directions overview UI during navigation. Other modes (walking, transit) can show related UI differences, but the exact layout varies by transport type and region.
My overview shows the wrong street—what should I do?
Check location accuracy, recenter the map, then restart directions. If it persists, test in an area with better GPS signal and confirm you’re on the latest Google Maps version from the Play Store.
Will the redesign affect route guidance accuracy?
The redesign is primarily about presentation and interaction. Accuracy depends mostly on GPS, map data, and network conditions—not the layout itself.
Bottom Line
The Google Maps redesign of the directions overview on Android is about making route info easier to read and controls easier to access while you’re navigating. If it looks unfamiliar, give yourself a few minutes on a short trip to learn how the panel expands and collapses.
If the overview is missing or out of sync, focus on the basics first: update Google Maps, verify location permissions, and remove battery/background restrictions. Those fixes resolve most post-redesign navigation issues on Android.
