Purple place pins on Google Maps are commonly reported to mark attractions such as museums, cinemas, amusement parks, monuments, historic sites, and photo spots. But Google does not define purple as a universal meaning for every map symbol. A purple mark could instead be a saved-place icon, a custom marker on a My Maps map, or part of a transit route. Its shape and context matter as much as its color.
What purple place pins usually indicate
For ordinary place-of-interest pins, recent reporting associates purple icons with attractions, including cinemas, museums, amusement parks, monuments, historic sites, and photo opportunities. That is a useful clue, not an official Google-wide color key: Google’s published legend describes map symbols and layers but does not assign purple one meaning across all icons.

Other reasons a purple symbol may appear
A transit line or station
Transit symbols belong to a different system from place pins. Google says transit lines may use colors chosen by the local transportation agency, so a purple line should not be read as an attraction marker. Check the transit layer and the route or station details.

A saved place or list
Saved places can appear on your map with list icons, which may make a marker look personal or unexpected. Google Maps lets you show or hide lists from the map, and eligible custom lists can use selected icons. Default lists have limits on icon customization. See Google’s instructions for creating and managing place lists.
A custom Google My Maps marker
If the symbol appears on a shared or imported map, it may have been styled by the map’s creator. Google My Maps supports custom marker colors and icons, including styling individual features or applying styles based on a data column. In that case, the map’s own legend or layer explains what purple means. See Google’s guide to using My Maps layers.

How to identify the purple icon on your map
- Check the shape. Determine whether it is a place pin, a transit line or station symbol, or a marker within a distinct custom map.
- Tap or click it. Read the place name or route details that appear; this helps distinguish a location from a route or saved item.
- Check the active layer and legend. Google Maps uses separate map information for nearby places, traffic, transit, biking, terrain, and other layers. The Google Maps layer and legend guide explains these contexts.
- Inspect your saved lists. If it looks like one of your personal saved markers, open Saved and check which lists are visible on the map. You can adjust list visibility in the list controls.
- Look for a custom-map legend. For a shared or imported My Maps map, check its layer and legend rather than assuming Google Maps assigned the color.
What the color can—and cannot—tell you
Purple is a helpful visual clue when the symbol is a standard place pin, but it is not enough to identify every symbol on the screen. A purple attraction pin, an agency-colored transit route, a saved-list icon, and a creator-styled My Maps marker can all have different meanings. Use the symbol’s shape, the details shown when selected, and the relevant layer or legend to tell them apart.
