Check its query parameters for query_place_id, origin_place_id, or destination_place_id. If none is present, Google’s documented lookup options are its Place ID finder or the Places API; the API route requires a key. A regular Maps URL can open a search or map without a key, but that does not make it a general-purpose Place ID lookup tool.
Check whether the URL already contains a Place ID
Google Maps URLs can be used without an API key. To identify the intended place precisely in a search link, Google supports a human-readable query together with query_place_id, for example query=PLACE_NAME&query_place_id=PLACE_ID. The text gives Maps a readable search term; the Place ID helps identify the specific result. Google Maps URLs documentation

For a directions URL, inspect origin_place_id and destination_place_id. Google also supports place-ID parameters for waypoints where applicable. A Place ID parameter alone is not enough: include the matching textual origin, destination, or waypoint value too. Google Maps URLs documentation

- Read its query parameters and look for
query_place_id,origin_place_id,destination_place_id, or a relevant waypoint place-ID parameter. - If one is present, use its value as the Place ID. Check that it still identifies the intended place before relying on it; IDs can change over time. Google’s Place ID guidance
Do not assume that every long, opaque, or shortened Maps link stores a Place ID in a consistent, documented location. Google’s URL documentation describes supported parameters, not every token that might appear in a Maps link. Google Maps URLs documentation

- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
If there is no embedded ID, use a documented lookup
A URL containing only a place name, address, or opaque token does not provide a documented, universal no-key conversion to a Place ID. Google’s documented routes for finding an ID are the Place ID finder and, for programmatic retrieval, Places API Text Search (ID Only). The official API example uses an API key. You can make a key-free Maps URL that searches for a name or address, but that opens a search; it is not a guaranteed step that returns the Place ID. The distinction is whether you need to open a map for a person or receive an identifier as data for software.

Build a Maps URL from a known Place ID
For a search link, include both a human-readable query and the ID. Google’s documented form is https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=PLACE_NAME&query_place_id=PLACE_ID. Replace the example values with the place name and Place ID, and encode URL values appropriately. The api=1 parameter is required: without it, Google says the other parameters are ignored and Maps opens in its default state. Google Maps URLs documentation

Understand what a Place ID does—and does not—guarantee
A Place ID is a textual identifier, not a permanent, globally unique guarantee that one place will always have just one ID. Google says IDs can vary in length, a place can have multiple IDs, and IDs may change. Google recommends refreshing IDs older than 12 months. Google’s Place ID guidance
That is why extracting an ID from a link is useful when the ID is already supplied, but should not be confused with a supported way to decode every Maps URL. Google documents key-free Maps URLs and separate finder/API lookup options; it does not document a universal no-key conversion for arbitrary links, shortened URLs, or CIDs. Avoid relying on URL expansion or page scraping as if either were a guaranteed, supported conversion method.
