Google Maps Offline Maps: How Long They Last and When to Update

Google Maps offline maps expire, but Google does not specify a fixed lifespan. The 15-day figure is an automatic-update window, not a guaranteed duration.

Google Maps offline maps expire, but Google’s current help instructions do not state a fixed lifespan. The 15 days Google mentions is the window when the app tries to update an area over Wi-Fi before it expires—not a guarantee that every download lasts 15 days.

What the 15-day window means

Google says Maps tries to update a downloaded area when it is within 15 days of expiry and your device is connected to Wi-Fi. That is an automatic-update attempt, not a stated map lifetime, and it is not guaranteed to succeed. Google’s help pages do not give a universal number of days that an offline map remains valid. Google Maps Help for Android and Google Maps Help for iPhone and iPad describe the update behavior.

Where offline maps are stored

On Android devices that support it, Google Maps can save offline maps to an SD card configured as portable storage. You can choose the storage preference in the app’s offline-map settings. Changing that preference requires downloading the map again, and the option depends on your device and storage setup. iPhone and iPad instructions do not document this SD-card option.
