Google Maps or Find My: the short answer
| If your priority is… | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A link for someone without an account on the same platform | Google Maps | Google documents a link that a person without a Google account can use for up to 24 hours. |
| Sharing destination, live position, and ETA while traveling | Google Maps | Trip-progress sharing works during car, walking, and bicycle navigation and ends when you arrive or stop navigating. |
| An all-Apple household or friend group | Find My | Find My is built into Apple apps and devices and can share Live Location between iPhones running iOS 15 or later. |
| Family location routines and Apple device finding | Find My | Family Sharing and Find My work together, although joining a family does not automatically share anyone’s location. |
| A temporary pause or an emergency review of several sharing relationships | Find My, with Safety Check | Apple provides per-person and global controls plus Safety Check for some sharing sources. Safety Check is separate from the normal Find My toggle. |
Use the service that matches the recipient and the immediate task rather than assuming one platform is inherently safer. Google Maps is often the least-friction option for a mixed-device, one-time exchange. Find My is usually the more integrated option for people who already use Apple devices and want ongoing family or device relationships.
What Google Maps location sharing reveals
Google’s Location Sharing feature is tied to a Google Account and a mobile device. It is off until the user starts sharing through a Google service, and it remains available even when Google Maps Timeline is turned off. Depending on how sharing is set up, a recipient may see the sharer’s name and profile photo, recent device location, battery status, and other details documented for that sharing method. Read Google’s current Android instructions at Google Maps Help and the iPhone/iPad version at Google Maps iPhone and iPad Help.

Standard person-to-person sharing
You select people and a duration instead of publishing a permanently public location. A Google recipient can be managed individually, so you can stop one relationship without stopping every other share. The exact information visible to the recipient depends on the method and account context; do not treat a shared pin as proof that every Google Maps screen exposes the same fields.
A link for a person without a Google account
Google documents link-based sharing for a person who does not have a Google account. The link is valid for up to 24 hours, making it suitable for a meeting, a pickup, or a short event rather than an indefinite arrangement. Anyone who receives the link during its validity period may be able to view the shared location, so send it only through a channel you trust and stop the share when the task is over.
Sharing progress during navigation
While navigating by car, on foot, or by bicycle, Google Maps can share your destination, estimated arrival time, and current location. The trip-progress share ends automatically when you arrive or when navigation stops. This is different from ordinary Location Sharing: it is a trip-specific status that should not remain active after the route ends.
Arrival and departure notifications
In eligible situations, a recipient can add arrival or departure notifications for a person who shares their location. The cited Google help page allows up to five such notifications per sharer. Google informs the sharer by email and may also send a push notification. The feature is not universal: some account types and link-based sharing are excluded. Check the current eligibility rules in Google’s notifications help before promising that an alert will work.

How to share and stop a Google Maps location
Google changes labels and screen layouts across Android, iOS, account types, and regions. The following flow uses the current Location Sharing terminology; if a label differs, look for the same function in your profile or account settings.
- Open Location Sharing. In Google Maps, open your profile picture or initials and choose Location sharing.
- Start a share. Choose the person, contact method, or link option, then select a duration. For a recipient without a Google account, use the link option and treat the 24-hour maximum as a hard expiry, not a recurring permission.
- For a route, share trip progress instead. Start navigation, open the route or navigation card, and choose the trip-progress sharing command. Confirm that the destination and ETA shown are the ones you intend to send.
- Verify the active list. Return to Location Sharing and check each recipient and its remaining duration. A Timeline setting does not replace this check; Location Sharing can work while Timeline is off.
- Stop one person. Select that recipient and choose Stop. This removes that person’s access without necessarily changing other shares.
- Stop trip progress. Use the navigation card’s stop-sharing control, or end navigation. Google also ends the trip share when you reach the destination.
For account-wide recipient and notification controls, use Google’s Location Sharing settings documentation at Google Location Sharing settings. The documentation describes who receives location and how permissions are managed; it does not establish a one-step emergency review equivalent to Apple’s Safety Check.
What Apple Find My location sharing does
Find My is integrated into Apple’s ecosystem. A shared location can be viewed through the Apple apps listed in Apple’s personal-safety guide, and Apple describes additional Live Location details when both people use iPhones with iOS 15 or later. While moving, those details can include direction and speed. The guide is available at Apple’s Find My and location sharing documentation.

Family Sharing does not silently enroll everyone
Being in the same Family Sharing group does not automatically start location sharing. Each family member still chooses whether to share. Apple’s Family Sharing explanation is at Apple Support. This distinction matters when someone expects a new family member to appear in Find My automatically: membership and consent are separate steps.

Apple apps and devices
Find My is designed for Apple devices such as iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. The reviewed Apple instructions center on Apple apps, accounts, and devices; they do not establish an equivalent anonymous web link for a person’s live location. If a recipient uses another platform, do not promise that the normal Find My person-sharing workflow will provide the same experience as a Google Maps link.
Live Location during movement
When both people use an iPhone with iOS 15 or later, Apple says Live Location can provide movement-related information in supported Apple apps, including direction and speed. Availability and displayed details can vary with operating-system version and app. The documentation describes the capability; it is not an accuracy test or a guarantee that every recipient sees identical fields.
How to share, pause, and stop in Find My
Apple’s labels vary by operating-system release. Confirm the wording on the device before relying on a step in a safety-sensitive situation.
- Start an individual share. Open Find My, choose the People section, use the add or share command, select a contact, and choose the sharing period offered by the device.
- Check family expectations. If someone is in your Family Sharing group but is not visible as a shared person, ask that person to opt in; group membership alone does not activate sharing.
- Stop one person. In Find My under People, select the person and choose the command to stop sharing your location with that person.
- Stop sharing broadly. Use the device’s global location-sharing control when you need to end sharing with everyone covered by that control. Verify the resulting People list rather than assuming one switch covers every account or service.
- Use temporary hiding when appropriate. Apple’s guide describes a Hide Location flow that resumes the next day. It is a pause, not a permanent deletion of every sharing relationship.
- Use Safety Check for a wider review. On supported iPhones, open Settings and choose Privacy & Security, then Safety Check. Follow the review or emergency-reset options shown. Apple says Safety Check can review or stop some sharing, including Find My location, but it may not cover every account or source of sharing. See Apple’s Safety Check guide.
Stopping Find My sharing can be noticed by the other person. Apple also warns that older operating-system versions may display a Messages notification. Deleting the Find My app does not itself stop location sharing. If personal safety is at risk, use Safety Check instructions and appropriate local support; do not assume a silent or completely undetectable stop.

Feature-by-feature comparison
| Reader need | Google Maps | Apple Find My |
|---|---|---|
| Cross-account link | Google documents a link usable by someone without a Google account for up to 24 hours. | The reviewed Apple person-sharing instructions focus on Apple apps and accounts; an equivalent anonymous web link is not established. |
| Sharing while navigating | Shares destination, current location, and ETA for car, walking, or bicycle navigation; ends at arrival or when navigation stops. | Apple documents Live Location and other Apple sharing routes, but the reviewed page does not document the same navigation-specific workflow. |
| Arrival/departure alerts | Eligible recipients can add up to five alerts per sharer in the cited help page. The sharer receives email and may receive push notification. Link-based sharing and certain accounts are excluded. | Family Sharing help describes recurring arrival/departure notifications and alerts when a family member is not at a place during a specified time. |
| Ecosystem | The person initiating Maps sharing needs a Google Account and mobile device; a recipient can receive a link without a Google account. | Works across Apple devices and apps. Apple describes richer Live Location details for two iPhones on iOS 15 or later. |
| Ending sharing | Stop sharing with a selected person, stop trip progress, and manage recipients and notification permissions in account settings. | Stop sharing with one person or everyone, or use temporary Hide Location. Stopping may be noticed, and deleting the app does not end sharing. |
| Safety review | The cited pages describe recipient and notification controls but do not substantiate a Safety Check equivalent. | Safety Check can review or stop some sharing and access, but Apple says it does not cover every possible source. |
Privacy: what the controls do—and do not—prove
Both products give you a meaningful way to choose recipients and end a share. Google emphasizes device- and account-specific Location Sharing and lets you manage individual recipients. Apple provides per-person controls, global controls, temporary hiding, and Safety Check for selected sharing sources. Those are documented control surfaces, not evidence that one company retains less data, encrypts more effectively, or delivers more accurate positioning.
For Google Maps, remember that the recipient may see recent location and battery status, along with your name and photo and other method-dependent details. A link also changes the audience model: possession of the link can be enough to view the share during its validity period. Treat a link as a temporary credential and stop it when the event ends.
For Find My, stopping a share removes the location from the other person’s Apple apps. Apple states: “When you stop sharing through any of the methods listed below, your location will disappear from the other person’s Find My, Maps, Contacts, and Messages apps.” Apple Support. The same guide warns that people may notice the change, so do not promise secrecy when helping someone leave an unsafe sharing arrangement.

You are meeting someone who uses a different platform
Use Google Maps’ time-limited link when the recipient does not have a Google account or when you do not know which phone platform they use. Set the shortest useful duration, send the link privately, and verify that it disappears from your active sharing list afterward.
Best Value
You want someone to follow a drive, walk, or cycle trip
Use Google Maps trip-progress sharing. It conveys the destination, current position, and ETA and is designed to end at arrival or when navigation stops. Do not use a permanent Location Sharing relationship for a single trip unless you actually want an ongoing share.
Your household already uses Apple devices
Use Find My when the people involved already rely on Apple apps and devices, especially if the same relationships include family location routines or finding Apple hardware. Ask each family member to opt in; Family Sharing membership alone does not make anyone visible.
You need a rapid review after a relationship or safety concern
On a supported iPhone, start with Safety Check, then inspect the Find My People list and other account or app permissions. Safety Check is not guaranteed to cover every source, so treat its result as a review of supported categories, not proof that every possible location pathway has been removed.

Common failure modes and fixes
- The Google link no longer works. A link share can last no more than 24 hours. Start a new share if the meeting has moved beyond that window; do not assume an expired link became a permanent share.
- A recipient cannot see a trip. Confirm that navigation is active, the trip-progress share was started from the current route, and the destination or ETA has not changed. Trip sharing ends at arrival or when navigation stops.
- You turned off Timeline but location is still shared. Timeline and Location Sharing are separate. Open Location Sharing and stop each active recipient or link.
- An arrival alert option is missing in Google Maps. The feature has account and sharing-method limits. Link-based shares and certain accounts are excluded, and the cited help allows no more than five alerts per sharer.
- A family member is absent from Find My. Check whether that person explicitly chose to share. Family Sharing membership does not begin person-to-person sharing automatically.
- Someone still expects to see you after you deleted Find My. App deletion does not stop sharing. Reinstall or use another Apple device to access Find My controls, then stop the relevant person or global share.
- You need to hide temporarily. Apple’s Hide Location flow is temporary and, according to the applicable guide, resumes the next day. Use a permanent stop when you do not want sharing to resume.
- You need a completely unnoticed stop. Neither platform should be presented as guaranteeing that. Apple explicitly warns that others may notice stopped sharing and that older systems may show a Messages notification.
Version, account, and regional limits
Google’s controls depend on the Google Account, device, sharing method, and sometimes region or account eligibility. Apple’s instructions vary by operating-system release, and richer Live Location details require both people to use iPhones with iOS 15 or later according to the cited guide. The exact buttons and notification behavior can therefore differ from screenshots or older tutorials.
Before relying on either service for a safety-critical appointment, test with the actual recipient, check the active-recipient list, confirm what information appears on the receiving device, and verify how to stop the share. Official documentation describes supported behavior, not a guarantee that every phone, account, carrier, or region will expose every option.
Bottom line
Google Maps is the practical default for mixed-device coordination, a recipient without a Google account, or a one-off trip where destination and ETA matter. Find My is the integrated choice for Apple users who want ongoing person and device relationships, Family Sharing workflows, and Apple’s Safety Check tools. In either case, choose recipients deliberately, use the shortest useful duration, and confirm that sharing has actually stopped when the event or need is over.
