Choose a Google Maps widget for the task

Google documents these broad choices, but the gallery’s labels and appearance can differ by iOS version. Google does not specify how often widgets refresh, so do not rely on one to update instantly or continuously.

Add a Google Maps widget to the Home Screen
- Touch and hold an open area of the iPhone Home Screen until the apps begin to move.
- Tap the Add control, then find and select Google Maps.
- Swipe through the available widget types and sizes. Choose the one that matches what you want to see.
- Tap to add the widget, position it on the Home Screen, and finish editing the screen.
Google’s Home Screen and Today-view widget guidance applies to iOS 11 and later. The available options and labels can vary across iOS versions.

Add Google Maps to the Lock Screen
Google’s documented Lock Screen widget support requires iOS or iPadOS 16 or later, with Google Maps installed.

- Touch and hold the Lock Screen, then enter customization.
- Select the Lock Screen you want to edit and open Add Widgets.
- Choose Google Maps and select a widget.
- Configure the widget if prompted, finish customizing the screen, and exit the editor.
Set up a frequent-trip widget
The frequent-trip widget depends on a trip being saved or pinned in Google Maps; adding the widget alone does not create a commute or destination. Save the trip in Maps first, either from a directions search or from suggestions on the saved-trips screen. Google says saved trips are available on mobile and supports driving, transit, and two-wheeler trips. See Google’s saved-trips instructions.
After saving or pinning the trip, add the frequent-trip widget using the Home Screen steps above and select it from the available Google Maps widget options. Google’s instructions describe the widget as a way to check directions and estimated arrival time for frequent trips.

What changes on iOS 18
Google says that after upgrading to iOS 18, old Maps widgets are no longer supported on the Today screen. Updated Google Maps widget choices remain available and include most features of the older widgets, but Google does not say that every old widget function is identical. If you used the legacy Today traffic widget, look for the updated Maps choices rather than assuming the old one will keep working unchanged. Google’s separate traffic-widget help page describes traffic information and nearby crashes, roadworks, or closures in Today view, but its iOS 11-and-later guidance does not override the iOS 18 compatibility note.
Remove a widget or check if it is missing
Remove a widget
- Touch and hold the Google Maps widget.
- Tap Edit widget and turn the widget off.
If Google Maps is not in the widget gallery
- Confirm that Google Maps is installed on the iPhone.
- Check the gallery for the screen you are editing: Home Screen or Lock Screen.
- Check your iOS version against Google’s documented compatibility: Home Screen and Today guidance begins at iOS 11; Lock Screen widgets require iOS 16 or later.
- If you upgraded to iOS 18 and are looking for an old Today-screen widget, look for the updated Maps widget choices instead.
These checks follow Google’s documented setup requirements; Google does not publish a complete troubleshooting flow or guarantee that they resolve every missing-widget issue. A Google Maps Community user reported a Work shortcut opening nearby-place results instead of the saved work address in January 2025, but that single report does not establish how common the behavior is or an official fix.

Keep navigation separate from the widget
A widget is a shortcut to trip or place information, not a replacement for using Google Maps navigation. Google recommends a power adapter especially for navigation trips longer than 30 minutes; this is a navigation tip, not a requirement for adding a widget. See Google’s navigation guidance.
