Google Maps Could Add Public Sharing for Ask Maps Conversations

Google Maps code hints at public links for Ask Maps conversations, but the feature remains unannounced and unavailable in the reported teardown.

Google Maps may be working on a way to share entire Ask Maps conversations through public links, but the feature is not available yet. An Android Authority teardown found related code and menu items in Google Maps version 26.41.00; the outlet could not get a sharing option to work inside a chat, and Google has not announced a release.

What the Google Maps teardown found

Android Authority reported on October 8, 2026, that it found the code string Public link to conversation in Google Maps version 26.41.00. The outlet also enabled a three-dot menu on the Ask Maps chat-history page. That menu included “Manage shared links,” which opened a “Shared public links” page, plus an option to delete all conversations. These are clues in work-in-progress code, not proof that public sharing has launched.

Despite those interface elements, Android Authority could not surface a public-link option inside an Ask Maps conversation. The report also spotted a possible interface change that would move Ask Maps into the search bar and shorten its label to “Ask.” That, too, is unconfirmed. Read Android Authority’s teardown report.

Can you share an Ask Maps conversation now?

Not through a documented public conversation-link feature. Google Maps Help explains how Android users can ask typed or spoken questions, follow up, revisit chats from History, and delete an entire conversation, but it does not document sharing a whole chat by public link. Google’s Ask Maps guidance for Android covers the currently documented chat controls.

Google already lets people share places with friends, but sharing a place is different from sharing the context and replies in an entire Ask Maps conversation. A conversation link could make it easier to pass along both the answer and the surrounding discussion than copying a single response; that is a potential benefit, not a confirmed feature description.

What is still unknown about public links

The teardown does not establish when or whether Google will release the feature. It also does not explain who could open a link, whether recipients would need a Google account, whether shared links could be revoked or would expire, or whether a conversation might reveal personalized or location-sensitive details. Those points should not be inferred from how sharing works in other Google products.

Google says Maps AI features use location data and that, depending on settings, location may be stored alongside interactions. In supported regions, when Personalized Recommendations is enabled, responses may also draw on searches, directions, past Ask Maps conversations, saved lists, reviews, ratings, photos and connected Google content. Google documents personalization and Maps Activity controls, as well as the ability to delete individual Ask Maps threads. Google’s explanation of how AI-powered Maps features use data describes those settings and data uses.

Ask Maps availability does not confirm chat sharing

Google introduced Ask Maps on March 12, 2026, as a conversational way to ask complex real-world questions and view options on a customized map. Its initial announcement said the feature was beginning to roll out in the United States and India on Android and iOS, with desktop coming soon. Google’s launch announcement also discussed sharing places; that capability is not evidence that conversation links exist.

In an August 6, 2026 update, Google described additional Ask Maps capabilities, including agentic actions, real-time transit information, Personal Intelligence and conversational contributions. It said rollout was extending to Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan and Mexico, as well as to more than 150 countries and territories in English. Those were rollout statements made on that date, not a guarantee that every feature is available to every user in every market today. Google’s August update describes those changes.

Check important answers before sharing them

Google warns that AI-generated answers can be wrong: “AI-powered answers can sometimes be incorrect. Be sure to double-check responses.” Verify important details against another reliable source before acting on or passing along an Ask Maps answer. Google Maps Help provides this caution alongside its Android guidance.
