People often notice that the incident icons and labels in Google Maps can look a lot like what they’ve seen in Waze—closures, hazards, police/controls, and general “something’s going on here” markers. When that happens, it can feel like Google Maps is “showing Waze incident reports.”
The short answer: Google Maps does not natively display Waze’s incident database. What you’re likely seeing is Google Maps’ own crowd-sourced traffic data, a misunderstanding caused by similar iconography, or an app/notification overlay that’s being confused as an in-map incident.

If the incident markers in Google Maps resemble Waze, it’s usually because:
- Google Maps is displaying its own Live Traffic and user-contributed incidents.
- A third-party app, launcher overlay, or notification feed is making it look like incidents are inside Google Maps.
- You’re viewing a link, screenshot, or embedded map that includes routing/traffic context sourced elsewhere.
Why you might think Google Maps is showing Waze reports
Waze and Google Maps both aim to represent real-time road conditions. Even when they’re using different underlying systems, the end result can appear similar on the screen.
- Similar incident categories: both systems commonly show road hazards, delays, slowdowns, and closures.
- Frequent updates: fast-changing traffic can make it feel like “the same crowd” is feeding both apps.
- Human perception: if you use Waze daily, you learn its icon language quickly, so anything visually close can register as “Waze.”
- Notification confusion: Waze incident alerts might be appearing while you’re navigating in Google Maps, so you mentally tie the alert to the map view.
What Google Maps incident reporting actually comes from
Google Maps incident and traffic indicators are generally based on Google’s traffic data sources, including real-time traffic conditions and crowd-sourced reports from Google Maps users (and related Google location services).

You can confirm what’s going on with a few fast checks. The goal is to determine whether the marker is coming from Google Maps itself or from something else on top of it.

- Open Google Maps and tap a visible incident marker (if interactive). Look for any label that indicates Google Maps reporting rather than Waze (for example, traffic/road status wording that matches Google Maps UI).
- Open Waze at the same location and time. Compare the incident type, icon style, and timing. If they differ, it’s a strong sign Google Maps is using its own data.
- On your device, check whether Waze notifications are enabled. If you’re getting Waze incident alerts while driving in Google Maps, that can cause misattribution.
- Check for installed accessibility tools, map “assist” apps, or custom launchers that might overlay information on top of Google Maps.
Android: check settings and isolate the cause
On Android, the most common culprits are traffic layers in Google Maps, Waze notification settings, and overlay apps.
- Confirm Google Maps traffic layers are on/off: Open Google Maps > tap your profile icon > Settings > Navigation settings (or Map settings depending on version) > look for Traffic and make sure it’s consistent (turn it off, then on) to see if the markers change.
- Check Waze notifications: Open Settings > Apps > Waze > Notifications. Temporarily disable notifications, then reopen Google Maps and observe whether the “Waze-like” incident perception still happens.
- Look for overlays: Open Settings > Apps > Special access > Display over other apps. Disable it for any non-essential app.
- Check installed apps: Remove or pause any “heads-up,” driving mode, or map enhancement apps that might inject UI elements.
- Update both apps: Update Google Maps and Waze from Google Play. After updating, re-check if the incident behavior changes.
iPhone and iPad: check settings and isolate the cause
On iOS, similar issues usually come from Google Maps traffic layers plus Waze notifications, or from iOS driving focus modes that bring alerts into your attention.

- Toggle Google Maps traffic: Open Google Maps > tap your profile icon > Settings > Navigation settings > enable/disable Traffic (wording can vary by app version). Watch whether the markers disappear and reappear.
- Disable Waze notifications temporarily: Go to Settings > Notifications > Waze. Turn off Allow Notifications (or temporarily disable alerts). If the “Waze incident” feeling stops, you were likely reacting to Waze alerts while viewing Google Maps.
- Check Focus/Driving behavior: If you use Focus (like Driving), verify which notifications are allowed. Go to Settings > Focus and check allowed apps/people.
- Update iOS apps: Update Google Maps and Waze in the App Store, then test again.
Compare the incident styles: Google Maps vs Waze
Even without perfect knowledge of every icon, you can compare the “language” each app uses.
| What to compare | Google Maps | Waze |
|---|---|---|
| Icon/label language | Traffic/incident wording matches Google’s UI patterns | Waze-specific categories and icon design |
| Detail depth | Often focuses on route performance, delays, and traffic conditions | Often emphasizes community reports and specific incident types |
| Consistency across apps | May not match Waze timing or category by category | Should match Waze’s own report stream |
| Interactivity | Tap markers for details based on Google’s system | Tap incidents for report details tied to Waze community |
If Google Maps markers never match Waze when you switch apps, you’re almost certainly not looking at Waze incidents.
What you can do if you want Waze incidents specifically
If your priority is Waze community reporting, the practical approach is to use Waze for incident awareness and Google Maps for routing—depending on what you want most.

Use Waze as the active driving app
When you need maximum community incident detail (police, road hazards, closures), run Waze as your navigation source. Then use Google Maps as a backup for route planning if you want.
Use Waze alerts while navigating in Google Maps
You can keep Waze installed and enable notifications, but let Google Maps do the visual navigation. This reduces the chance that you’ll miss incidents while still using your preferred route interface.
Troubleshooting: if reports look wrong or keep changing
Sometimes incident markers don’t behave as expected due to cache, connectivity, or app state.
When markers lag behind real conditions
Check your connection quality. In both Google Maps and Waze, weak data can delay incident updates. Toggle mobile data/Wi‑Fi and re-check.
When markers appear, then vanish
Try force-closing the app and reopening it. Also verify you didn’t switch Google Maps traffic layers off while testing.

When the UI doesn’t match anything you see in Waze
Confirm you’re not viewing a different map instance (for example, inside another app like CarPlay/Android Auto, or a shared route preview). The incident layer could differ between contexts.
When you suspect a UI overlay app
Temporarily disable overlays (Android: Display over other apps; iOS: check accessibility and any custom dashboard apps). If the “Waze-like” markers disappear, you’ve found the cause.
Privacy and reporting considerations
Both Google Maps and Waze rely on location-related data and user reporting. If you’re concerned about how incidents are generated, review each app’s location permissions.
- Android: Settings > Privacy & security > Location services, then check Google Maps and Waze app permissions.
- iOS: Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, then check Google Maps and Waze.
If you disable location permission, incidents and traffic layers will usually degrade or stop updating.

Common mistakes
- Assuming visual similarity equals data sharing: Google and Waze can both represent incidents, but they don’t share Waze’s incident database inside Google Maps.
- Ignoring notifications: Waze alerts can coincide with your Google Maps navigation session, creating a false correlation.
- Testing with stale routing context: Route previews, saved trips, or cached map tiles can mislead you. Refresh by re-opening the navigation view.
- Not updating apps: Iconography and layers can change between versions. Updating both apps helps eliminate UI regressions.
FAQ
Why does Google Maps show police or road hazard icons that look like Waze?
Because traffic incident markers are similar across navigation products. Google Maps is showing its own traffic/incident layer, not Waze’s report feed.

Can I turn on a setting to make Google Maps display Waze reports?
No official setting exists for importing Waze incident reports into Google Maps. Your best option is using Waze for navigation or enabling Waze notifications while using Google Maps.
If I disable Waze notifications, will Google Maps stop showing Waze-like incidents?
If what you were seeing was caused by Waze alerts, it will likely reduce confusion. But if the incident markers are genuinely in Google Maps’ traffic layer, they’ll remain as long as Google Maps traffic reporting is enabled.
Could Android Auto or CarPlay be mixing what I see?
Yes. Some driving interfaces change which app is “active” and how alerts are presented. If you’re using Android Auto/CarPlay, test on your phone screen first to isolate whether the behavior is from the vehicle interface.

Google Maps can’t natively display Waze incident reports, even if the icons and categories look similar. What you’re seeing is almost always Google Maps’ own traffic layer—or Waze notifications creating the impression of shared incident data.
If you want Waze’s community incidents, use Waze as your navigation app or enable Waze alerts while you drive with Google Maps.
