Google publicly released Deep Review on October 14, 2026, as an agentic AI system for checking complex documents, including research manuscripts. It can examine mathematical and logical consistency, verify claims against external information, identify possible proof gaps, and suggest clearer wording. It is a rigorous second set of eyes—not a replacement for authors’ judgment, expert review, or formal peer review.
What Google Deep Review does
Deep Review grew out of Google’s Paper Assistant Tool (PAT), an experimental manuscript stress-testing system used in pilots connected with STOC 2026, ICML 2026, NeurIPS 2026 and ICLR 2027. Google describes the released product as support for drafting and scientific-process verification. Its intended scope goes beyond grammar correction:

- Flagging calculation mistakes, variable inconsistencies and possible gaps in proofs.
- Suggesting improvements to clarity and readability.
- Grounding factual claims and comparing a document with existing work.
Rajesh Jayaram and Vincent Cohen-Addad of Google Research said the system is engineered to provide “rigorous feedback and technical verification on complex documents.” The practical result is a list of issues for an author to investigate, not an authoritative verdict that a theorem, citation or conclusion is correct.
How the four-stage review pipeline works
- Document segmentation: An agent divides the complete input into logical, potentially overlapping sections. Overlap is intended to preserve context when an argument crosses section boundaries.
- Adaptive budgeting: Deep Review assigns more computational effort to information-dense material, such as mathematical proofs, rather than treating every paragraph identically.
- Deep parallel verification: Specialist reasoning agents inspect sections simultaneously while retaining access to the full document’s context.
- Global synthesis and grounding: A synthesis agent combines the reports, checks for contradictions, reruns logic checks when necessary and uses external grounding to reduce unsupported or hallucinated findings.
This architecture is designed for documents where a local notation error can affect a later result. It also explains why a review may take longer than a conventional spelling or style pass: the system is allocating analysis to arguments, calculations and evidence, not merely scanning sentences.

What the pilot found
The earlier PAT experiments provide the main public evidence behind the launch. Google says more than 16,000 opted-in manuscripts were covered across the conference pilots. In the STOC 2026 pilot, an advanced version using Gemini 2.5 Deep Think aimed to return constructive pre-submission feedback within 24 hours.
Reported examples included inconsistent variable names, calculation errors, incorrect applications of inequalities and logical gaps in proofs. One participant said PAT found “a critical bug… that made our proof entirely incorrect,” describing it as an embarrassingly simple error that had escaped detection for months.

Those results describe participant perceptions and pilot feedback, not an independent measurement of proof-correction accuracy. Google also reports that submissions to ICLR, NeurIPS and ICML exceeded 74,000 in 2026, compared with approximately 45,000 in 2025, 32,000 in 2024 and 23,000 in 2023. The increasing volume helps explain the demand for an additional pre-submission checking pass, but it does not make an AI report equivalent to a conference decision.

How to use Deep Review on a manuscript
At launch, the workflow is intentionally simple and supports one document at a time in PDF or plain-text form.

- Prepare the manuscript as a PDF or plain-text file. Check that equations, symbols, tables and figure captions are legible in the chosen format.
- Open Deep Review and upload the document.
- Start a review and wait for the system to segment, verify and synthesize the document.
- Read each flagged issue in the context of the cited passage, proof or figure. Treat it as a candidate error until you verify it yourself.
- Correct the manuscript in your normal authoring system, then submit a revised file for another pass if you need to check whether the change introduced a new inconsistency.
Every user receives two complimentary document reviews per week. Organizations or researchers with larger workloads can connect a Gemini API key for higher limits and programmatic integration through the Deep Review API. Google says multi-file input is planned but is not part of the initial format support, so a project that depends on separate appendices, data files or source bundles may require a consolidated document or a later workflow.
Does Deep Review replace peer review?
No. Google explicitly frames the system as an augmentation to peer review. Peer reviewers make higher-level judgments about significance, novelty, methodology, interpretation, ethics and whether evidence supports the claims. Deep Review can point to a suspicious step or an unsupported statement, but the author or an expert must determine whether the warning is valid.

The pilot feedback was decoupled from official conference review. Google reports that experts sometimes encountered hallucinations, particularly with complex notation or figures, and used the output as a starting point for verification. A sensible workflow is therefore:

- Recheck every material finding against the original derivation, source or figure.
- Ask domain experts to assess claims the system cannot reliably interpret.
- Keep the formal peer-review process as the final external check.
Privacy, storage and data handling
Google’s launch policy says uploaded documents are not used to train, fine-tune or improve Google models. The launch post also says files are stored for one year solely to display them in the Deep Review interface. That retention period matters for unpublished work: authors should still confirm that their institution, funder, conference or coauthors permit uploading the manuscript, and remove confidential material when it is not needed for the review.
The stated policy addresses model training and the product interface, but it does not eliminate ordinary confidentiality obligations. Do not treat an AI report as a secure substitute for your institution’s approved storage, data-classification process or human nondisclosure agreements.
Deep Review compared with other checking approaches

For most authors, these are complementary layers. A language pass can clean presentation, Deep Review can stress-test technical structure, and qualified reviewers can decide whether the work is sound and important.
Known limits and practical precautions
- Notation and figures: Complex symbols, diagrams and image-based equations can be misread, producing false alarms or missed errors.
- Verification burden: A confident-sounding explanation is still an AI-generated suggestion; inspect the underlying line of reasoning.
- Single-file launch: PDF and plain text are supported initially, while multi-file workflows are still planned.
- Review capacity: The free allowance is two document reviews per user each week; larger-scale automation requires an API key and applicable limits.
- Scope: The system can assist with technical consistency but cannot decide research ethics, authorship disputes, real-world importance or acceptance.
Google’s own pilot conclusion captures the intended role: the goal is “not to replace the critical peer review process, but rather to augment and enhance it.” Used that way, Deep Review is best understood as an automated pre-submission audit that can catch routine mistakes before they consume a reviewer’s time, while leaving responsibility for the manuscript with its authors and human experts.
