Google’s experiments are not all Search features or polished products. Google Labs collects early ideas for creating, researching and learning, while the separate Experiments with Google archive is a broad catalog of projects at the intersection of art, technology, design and culture. A handful are useful starting points for making something, exploring a subject or organizing research—but a directory listing is not a promise of permanent or universal access.
What Google’s experiments are—and where to find them
Google Labs is the current place to browse Google experiments and early-access ideas. The directory spans creative work, development, research and learning, rather than focusing only on Search. Google says some experiments may grow into everyday products; others may change or never become products.

Experiments with Google is a second route: an archive-style directory of projects that explore art, technology, design and culture. It displayed 1,605 experiments when accessed in 2026. That live count can change and says nothing by itself about a project’s current availability or usefulness.

Useful Google Labs experiments by task
These examples are described by Google in its directories. Their descriptions explain the intended use, not independent proof of performance or accuracy.
| Experiment | Useful for | Google’s description |
|---|---|---|
| Playground | Creating and sharing games | An experimental gaming platform for creating, playing and sharing games from an idea description, without coding. |
| Google Flow | Creative storytelling | An AI creative studio for bringing stories to life. |
| Literature Insights | Exploring research literature | A tool for finding papers, structuring data tables and creating artifacts such as reports and slide decks. |
| Learn Your Way | Learning from content | An AI learning tool that transforms content into an experience tailored to the learner. |
For making something
Playground is the clearest fit if you have a game idea but do not want to start by coding. Google describes it as supporting creation, play and sharing from a written idea. Google Flow is aimed at creative storytelling. The Labs descriptions do not establish what either tool can produce in practice, so treat them as experiments to try rather than as dependable production workflows.

For research and learning
Literature Insights is intended to help find papers and organize information into tables and presentation-style artifacts. It may be a useful discovery or drafting aid, but Google’s listing is not a guarantee that its results are complete or correct; verify papers, citations and claims against their original sources. Learn Your Way is designed to adapt content into a learning experience, which may be worth exploring when you want another way to engage with material.

The archive is useful when you want a compact creative experience or an unusual way into a topic. Its examples are not necessarily current products; open each listing to see whether its launch link still works.

How to try Search Labs experiments
Search Labs is specifically for trying early-stage Google Search experiences and sharing feedback. Google’s help page directs desktop users to Chrome and phone users to the Google app; this guidance applies to Search Labs, not every project in Google Labs.

- On a desktop, open Chrome and go to Google Search Help’s Search Labs instructions. On a phone, use the Google app.
- Follow the Search Labs entry and on-screen instructions to view experiments available to your account.
- Choose an available experiment and follow its controls to try it. Availability may vary; a feature described elsewhere is not necessarily enabled for every user.
- Use the feedback option if you want to report your experience. Search Labs is intended for testing and feedback, so do not assume an experimental Search feature will remain unchanged.
NotebookLM and source-based research
Google’s Search Labs listing for NotebookLM describes it as a personalized AI research assistant for organizing and understanding information. The listing names possible source types including PDFs, websites, YouTube videos, audio files, Google Docs and Google Slides. This describes the materials it can work with; grounding an answer in supplied sources does not guarantee that the answer is accurate. Check important statements against the underlying documents.

Google’s current Labs page invites people to discover experiments, try early access and provide feedback. Its 2023 announcement by then-VP/GM of Labs Shiv Venkataraman framed the uncertainty directly: “Some of these ideas might turn into full-blown features or products, others won’t.” That is historical context, not a current access policy. The practical takeaway is to distinguish an experimental listing from a stable product and avoid building an important workflow around a feature until its availability and behavior meet your needs.
