Google Keyword Rankings: How to Check Your Search Position

Use Google Search Console’s Search results report to find queries that showed your site, review average position, and compare performance by page, country, device, and date.

Use Google Search Console’s Performance → Search results report to see which queries showed your site and the average position Google reported. Turn on Average position, then inspect the Queries table. Treat the number as an average across appearances—not a guaranteed live rank that every searcher will see.

How to check a keyword’s position in Google Search Console

  1. Open the correct website property in Google Search Console.

  2. Go to Performance → Search results. Choose the date range and search type you want to examine. The report defaults to the past three months, and you can change that range.

  3. Turn on Average position. The report can also show clicks, impressions, and click-through rate (CTR).

  4. Choose Queries to find searches for which your site received impressions. Select a query to filter the report to that search.

  5. Choose Pages to see which URLs appeared, or add filters for a particular page, country, device, or date range when you need a narrower comparison.

Search Console reports queries that generated impressions; it is not a tool for entering any keyword and retrieving a guaranteed rank. A query in the table does not mean your site will necessarily appear when you search for it yourself in a fresh Google search.

What “average position” means

Google defines position as the location of the topmost result from your site or page within the selected scope. Position 1 is the topmost position, position 2 is the next, and so on. Search Console averages that topmost position across the relevant appearances. As Google puts it, “The value is the average position of the topmost result from your entire site.” Google’s explanation of impressions, position, and clicks also describes nuances for some result types: a result within a compound element can be reported by its position in the container, rather than by the container’s position in the page.

Because the reported average can combine appearances across queries, pages, locations, devices, dates, and result elements, it is not an exact, current, universal rank for a keyword. State the report’s scope whenever you quote a position.

How to make a useful ranking comparison

For an apples-to-apples comparison, keep the query, page or property scope, date range, country, device, and search type consistent—or state which of them changed. In the report, use its query, page, country, device, search type, and date controls to isolate the relevant data. Google’s guide to performance in Search explains how to explore these dimensions.

Read average position alongside impressions, clicks, and CTR. Position alone does not show how often a query appeared or whether searchers clicked. Also note whether you are viewing or comparing data grouped by property or by page: aggregation changes with the selected dimension, so chart and table totals may differ.

How to investigate a change in position

  1. Set the same date ranges and filters for the periods you want to compare.

  2. Check whether the change is concentrated in particular queries or pages by reviewing the Queries and Pages views.

  3. Use country, device, and search-type filters to see whether the movement is limited to a particular audience or kind of search.

  4. Interpret the position change with impressions, clicks, and CTR; do not treat one averaged number as proof that every searcher saw the same ranking.

The newest report data may be preliminary and can change as Google collects it. Allow for that when evaluating recent movement.

When you need a fixed keyword list

Search Console is useful for reviewing observed Google Search performance and discovering queries that already showed your site. If you need recurring checks against a predefined list of keywords, a dedicated rank-tracking service is an optional, separate workflow; its measurements should not be confused with Search Console’s average-position metric.
