Google I/O 2024, held on May 14, 2024, centered on putting Gemini and related AI systems into Google’s consumer products, Android, Workspace, Search and developer tools. The keynote moved from DeepMind to Search, Workspace, Gemini, Android, developer updates and responsible AI, while Google’s broader roundup covered more than 100 announcements across additional products. These are historical announcements: a keynote demo, preview or test should not be treated as proof that a feature is universally available today.
What did Google announce at I/O 2024?
Google’s main presentation was the Google I/O 2024 keynote, held on May 14. Its narrative followed seven areas: DeepMind, Search, Workspace, Gemini, Android, developer updates and responsible AI. Google’s official roundup of 100+ announcements expanded the scope to Android, accessibility, privacy, Google TV and other products that did not all receive equal time in the keynote.
The event’s central message was that Gemini would become a layer across Google’s services rather than a standalone chatbot. The announcements addressed several different audiences:
- Consumers: new Gemini experiences in Search, Workspace and Android.
- AI developers: new Gemini models, API capabilities and Google AI Studio updates.
- Android developers: Android Studio improvements and Gemini-assisted development features.
- Researchers and safety teams: demonstrations from DeepMind and updates on responsible AI.
Gemini 1.5 Flash, Gemini 1.5 Pro and Project Astra
Google’s dedicated Gemini I/O announcement introduced Gemini 1.5 Flash, described updates to Gemini 1.5 Pro and expanded the Gemini API. It also presented Project Astra, a prototype for a real-time, multimodal AI assistant.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro XL; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
Gemini 1.5 Flash
Gemini 1.5 Flash was positioned as a lighter Gemini 1.5 model for developers who need fast responses and lower-cost processing while still working with multimodal inputs. The announcement made the model available through Google’s developer-facing Gemini services at that time; access limits, pricing, naming and supported regions can change, so the I/O announcement is not a current entitlement.
Gemini 1.5 Pro and the Gemini API
Google also announced improvements to Gemini 1.5 Pro and its API. The Gemini API and Google AI Studio gained additional audio understanding, including the ability to work with uploaded video in the contexts described by Google. Developers should check the current API documentation and account requirements before relying on any particular model name or capability.
Project Astra
Project Astra was shown as a prototype vision for an assistant that can interpret live video and conversation, remember what it has seen and respond in real time. It was a demonstration of possible future product behavior, not a generally available consumer product announced with a universal release date.
Rank #2

What new AI features were coming to Android?
Google’s Android I/O announcement described Gemini integrations and on-device AI experiences, with some examples tied to Pixel hardware. The company did not say that every announced function would work on every Android phone.
Gemini on Android
Google showed Gemini becoming more integrated with Android apps and workflows. The exact behavior depended on the product, software build and device capability. Treat these as announced experiences whose rollout and regional availability must be checked separately.
Opt-in scam-call detection
One of the clearest Android announcements was a planned, opt-in scam-call detection feature using Gemini Nano on the device. Processing on the phone was part of the privacy and architecture description. Google presented it as a test or announced experience, not as a feature automatically enabled on all Android devices. Hardware support, language availability and market rollout therefore matter.
Rank #3
- Google Pixel 10 Pro is the ultimate Pixel experience, featuring advanced AI with Gemini, unbelievable camera quality, impeccable design in two sizes, and the next-gen Google Tensor G5 chip[1]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works - Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Get a head start on syncing your data before it even arrives: After you purchase your new Pixel, look for an email that explains how to transfer your photos, videos, passwords, and more in just a few quick steps[11]
- Pixel’s pro camera system makes everything look amazing, even in low light; capture more of the scene with advanced Google AI models, and bring out incredible details with 100x Pro Res Zoom, stunning 50 MP images, and super steady videos in 8K[10]
- Pixel 10 Pro is built with durable aluminum and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for scratch and drop resistance; the 6.3-inch Super Actua display with 3,300-nit peak brightness is easy on the eyes, even in direct sunlight[3,13,18]
Pixel compatibility is specific, not universal
Some on-device Gemini Nano examples were situated around Pixel hardware, including the Pixel 8 Pro. That makes Pixel compatibility relevant for particular features, but the I/O announcements do not establish that a Pixel 8 Pro is required for all of Google’s AI announcements or that every Pixel model supports every capability.
What did Google announce for Android developers?
Android developers received a separate set of announcements covered by the Android Developers Blog roundup. Google also published a detailed Android development-tools article and a developer event recap.

At the time of I/O 2024, Android Studio Koala Feature Drop was identified as version 2024.1.2 in the Canary channel. Canary software is an early preview channel, so that version and channel description are historical details rather than a guarantee about the current stable release.
Gemini-assisted development
Google highlighted Gemini-powered features for Android development, including crash insights and code transformations. These tools were intended to help developers understand failures, modify code and work through development tasks inside the Android toolchain. Feature names, eligibility and supported IDE channels can change as previews mature.
Sessions and learning material
Google’s developer recap said the event had more than 150 sessions and that learning content would be available on demand beginning May 16 at 8 a.m. Pacific Time. That figure describes the contemporaneous I/O program, not a current catalog size.

How to interpret Google I/O 2024 today
- Identify the product surface. Search, Workspace, Android, Gemini API and Android Studio had different release processes.
- Check the maturity label. Separate generally available model or API access from a preview, test, staged rollout or prototype.
- Verify device and account requirements. On-device Gemini Nano features may require specific hardware, Android versions, languages or regions.
- Use current documentation for present availability. The keynote, roundup and developer posts are reliable historical records, but they are not live compatibility trackers.
The lasting significance of the event
I/O 2024 showed Google aligning its major product groups around Gemini: new model tiers for developers, multimodal assistant research, Android integrations, on-device processing and AI features for Google’s established services. Its practical importance is therefore less a single “I/O feature” than a map of Google’s direction in May 2024. Whether a particular announcement reached your phone, account or development environment remains a separate, current-status question.
