Google Home will support Walmart’s new $23 cameras natively

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Home supporting Walmart’s new $23 cameras natively is the kind of change that quietly matters. It removes the guesswork of whether you’ll need extra steps, and it puts camera setup in the same app you already use for lights, speakers, and routines.

If you just bought one of the low-cost Walmart cameras and you want it to show up in Google Home reliably—live view, motion alerts, and basic automations—this guide walks through the full setup and the fixes when things don’t cooperate.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What native Google Home support actually means

“Native” support generally means the Google Home app can discover, add, and manage the camera without you manually bridging through a separate platform every time you want to use it.

In practical terms, you should expect at least these improvements:

Google Nest Cam Indoor (Wired, 3rd Gen) - Security Camera - 2025 - Snow
  • Meet the smarter, sharper wired Google Nest Cam Indoor; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what to look out for and what to do next[1,2,3](Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
  • With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Kids are playing soccer in the living room”[3]; and get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
  • Google Nest Cam Indoor keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification,
and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a
green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
  • Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, Nest Cam’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, and see in the dark with night vision; and with a wider, taller field of view, you can see even more of a long hallway or large room[1]
  • Search your video history with help from Gemini[3]; try something like “What happened to the vase in the living room?” to see a summary and relevant clips (subscription required)
  • Simple pairing via the Google Home app add-device flow.
  • Consistent controls (live video, camera settings, and event notifications where supported).
  • Less account friction if the camera works through Google’s supported integrations rather than custom workarounds.

Exact features can vary by camera model, but native support usually means fewer setup steps and fewer “it works… except on Tuesdays” moments.

Which Walmart $23 cameras are we talking about?

Walmart’s $23 smart camera deals typically refer to entry-level indoor security cameras sold under Walmart’s house brands or budget lines. The headline is about price, but the setup experience depends on the exact model and its supported integration.

Before you start pairing, check the camera label or box for any of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Model number
  • Whether it says Works with Google Home or lists Google Home as a supported platform
  • The Wi‑Fi setup method (most budget cameras use 2.4 GHz)

If you can’t confirm the model, you can still follow the steps below—just be ready to handle an account-link prompt or a compatibility check if Google Home can’t match the device.

Prerequisites before you set anything up

Most “Google Home can’t add my camera” problems come down to networking, app versions, or using the wrong pairing flow. Get these ready first.

Hardware and account requirements

  • Google account already used in Google Home
  • Google Home app installed and updated
  • Camera powered on and in pairing mode
  • Stable Wi‑Fi near the camera during setup

Wi‑Fi requirements

Most low-cost cameras require 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi. If your router uses a combined SSID (one name for both 2.4 and 5 GHz), you may still be fine—but only if the camera can connect to the 2.4 GHz band.

If you’re unsure, plan to temporarily separate SSIDs (or use a “2.4G” network name) during setup.

Step-by-step: Add the Walmart $23 camera to Google Home

These steps are the same idea on both Android and iPhone: update Google Home, add device, pick the camera category, then follow the on-screen pairing prompts.

Terminology can vary slightly by app version, but the labels below match the typical UI flows.

Tapo 1080P Indoor Security Camera, Baby Monitor, Dog Camera, Wired, C100
  • ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
  • EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
  • PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
  • VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
  • FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.

On Android

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap + (top-left or top-right depending on your layout).
  3. Select Set up device → New devices.
  4. Choose Works with Google or Have something already set up only if the pairing flow asks for it.
  5. Select Camera or the closest matching category (indoor security camera / surveillance).
  6. Put the camera into pairing mode (usually a setup button press). Wait for the camera’s status light to indicate pairing.
  7. Follow the prompts to connect the camera to your Wi‑Fi. If asked, enter your 2.4 GHz password.
  8. Return to the Google Home app and confirm the device name and room.
  9. After it’s added, open the camera tile to confirm live view loads.

On iPhone (iOS)

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap + → Set up device.
  3. Select New devices.
  4. Pick the Camera device type when prompted.
  5. Trigger pairing mode on the camera (per the physical button/light instructions).
  6. Follow the on-screen Wi‑Fi steps. Enter your 2.4 GHz network details if the app asks.
  7. Choose the room and confirm setup.
  8. Test live view and any motion notification toggles that appear.

Best setup practices (so it stays connected)

Even when pairing succeeds, weak signal or frequent reboots can break video streaming later. These habits reduce failures.

Wi‑Fi requirements: 2.4 GHz is usually the deal

If you can, keep the camera on a network that’s strong and consistent. For apartments and houses with crowded bands, 2.4 GHz performance can vary wildly between routers and locations.

  • Place the camera within 10–15 feet (3–5 meters) during setup.
  • Avoid pairing from a far room where your phone still has a strong signal but the camera doesn’t.
  • If you have a mesh system, test near the main node first.

Placement for reliable motion and video

Cheap cameras often rely on basic motion detection and compression. Better placement gives the motion sensor more usable frames.

  • Face the camera toward the area with expected movement (hallway entrances, doorways).
  • Avoid pointing it directly at a TV, window, or bright lamp—night mode can saturate.
  • Keep it at a stable angle; bumping the unit can shift coverage and make alerts feel “broken.”

Privacy and permissions you should check

Native Google Home support doesn’t change your responsibility to control permissions. If the camera is installed in a shared household, privacy settings matter.

Camera permissions in iOS/Android

Depending on your phone and Google Home version, you may be prompted for local permissions. If live view works but notifications don’t, permissions might be part of the issue.

  • iPhone: verify Google Home has notification permissions in Settings.
  • Android: verify notification and background data settings for Google Home are allowed.

Google Home privacy settings

In the Google Home app, open the camera device and check for options related to:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Sharing with household members
  • Event notifications (motion, person detection if supported)
  • Time-based schedules (quiet hours)
  • Whether cloud recording is enabled (if the camera supports it)

Controls and automation: what you can do in Google Home

After the camera is added, Google Home typically provides a live feed, event timeline, and—depending on the camera’s capabilities—settings for alerts and automations.

View live video and events

Open the camera tile in Google Home to view live video. For motion events, look for an events feed/timeline inside the device details.

If the timeline is empty but you’re seeing motion on the camera, check notification settings and whether the camera is allowed to upload events.

Google Nest Cam Indoor (Wired, 3rd Gen) - Security Camera - 2025 - Hazel | 2K video, motion detection, color night vision, 2-way audio, works with Google Home and Gemini, intelligent alerts

  • Search your video history with help from Gemini[3]; try something like “What happened to the vase in the living room?” to see a summary and relevant clips (subscription required)

Use routines and notifications

Use Routines to make the camera part of a larger system. Common examples include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • When everyone leaves home → enable notifications (or enable a specific camera alert mode)
  • At night → reduce distractions by silencing alerts (if your camera supports schedules)
  • When motion is detected → trigger a Google Nest speaker announcement (if supported by your setup)

Not every camera supports every trigger type, so if you don’t see a motion trigger in Routines, that’s a compatibility limit rather than a bug.

Cast to a Nest display or TV

If you have a Nest Hub, Google Nest Display, or a Chromecast-enabled TV, you may be able to open the camera feed on the screen using Google Home controls.

Test it once after setup so you don’t discover weeks later that the camera model can’t stream to your specific device category.

Troubleshooting when Google Home won’t find or add the camera

Most failures happen at one of three stages: discovery, pairing, or post-pairing streaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick checks (30 seconds each)

  • Restart the camera: power off for 10 seconds, power on, then try pairing again.
  • Confirm pairing mode: the status light should indicate pairing (often a blinking pattern).
  • Use the same Wi‑Fi as your phone: don’t try to set up on a different network.
  • Disable VPN temporarily on your phone.

Fixes that solve most issues

Make sure you’re on 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi

If your phone is on 5 GHz, the camera may still fail. During setup, switch your phone to the 2.4 GHz SSID (or temporarily split your Wi‑Fi into separate 2.4 and 5 networks).

Then re-run the add-device flow.

Power-cycle and re-try pairing

Some cameras enter a partial pairing state. After turning power back on, wait 60–90 seconds before starting the Google Home pairing flow.

Unlink/relink the account (if prompted)

If Google Home asks you to sign in or link an integration, make sure you use the same Google account and that you don’t already have the camera linked under a different account.

If you previously attempted setup, remove the device from Google Home and start over.

Google Indoor Nest Security Cam 1080p (Wired) - 2nd Generation - Non-Retail Packaging - Snow
  • Nest Cam has built-in intelligence and can tell the difference between a person, animal, and vehicle and send alerts directly through the Google Home app[1], no subscription required.Controller Type:Google Assistant.Connectivity protocol:Bluetooth;Wi-Fi.Power source type:Corded Electric
  • Easily check in from anywhere 24/7 with 1080p HDR video[1] with night vision, and see what you missed with 3 hours of free event video history[2]; add a Nest Aware subscription (sold separately) for up to 60 days of video history[3]
  • If your Wi-Fi goes down, Nest Cam will store up to 1 hour of recorded events so you can see what you missed [4]
  • Take action in an instant if something happens; talk and listen with the built in speaker and mic on your security camera or call your local emergency service directly from the Google Home app (Nest Aware subscription required)[5]
  • Set up Activity Zones to receive phone notifications about specific areas of your home and know when familiar faces arrive (Nest Aware subscription required for familiar face alerts)[1,6]

Update firmware and the Google Home app

Firmware updates can be essential for native integrations. Update the Google Home app, then check the camera’s own app (if you have it) for firmware.

  • Update Google Home from the Google Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS).
  • Any “update camera firmware” option in the camera’s companion app should be completed before finalizing Google Home setup.

Factory reset the camera

If you’ve tried pairing multiple times, a factory reset often resets the camera’s connection state.

Typical reset behavior: hold the physical reset/setup button for 10–15 seconds until the status light changes. Then re-enter pairing mode and add it in Google Home again.

When the camera is added, but live video won’t load

If the camera appears in Google Home but live video fails, try this sequence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the camera in Google Home and refresh/reload the live feed.
  2. Check your phone’s Wi‑Fi connection quality and try again on the same network the camera uses.
  3. Reboot the camera (power cycle).
  4. Confirm the camera is still connected to Wi‑Fi in the companion app (if it has one).

If live view only fails on one phone but works on another, the problem might be notification/app permissions or a corrupted cache.

When motion alerts never trigger

Motion alerts depend on both the camera’s internal sensor settings and Google Home’s notification configuration.

  • In Google Home, open the camera device and check Motion notifications.
  • Verify the camera’s motion sensitivity mode if the camera has it in its settings.
  • Confirm you didn’t enable “Quiet hours” or similar schedule modes.

When audio is out of sync or one-way

Audio issues usually come from network jitter or app-side throttling. To fix:

  1. Move the camera slightly closer to the router or mesh node.
  2. Try live view again after a camera reboot.
  3. Check if your Wi‑Fi uses bandwidth-heavy features nearby (some routers handle 2.4 GHz poorly under load).

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Pairing on the wrong band (5 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz).
  • Trying to set up far from the camera and assuming the phone signal equals camera signal.
  • Skipping firmware updates when the camera’s app offers them.
  • Leaving duplicate devices in Google Home after failed attempts—remove the old entries first.

Alternatives if you can’t add it natively

If Google Home still won’t add the Walmart $23 camera, you have options that keep you moving.

Use the manufacturer’s app first, then re-try Google Home

Many budget cameras work best when you complete the initial Wi‑Fi provisioning and firmware update in the camera’s own app first, then link it to Google Home afterward.

Some camera models share branding but differ in supported integrations. If Google Home can’t detect your exact model, check whether the camera is listed under the integration flow Google Home offers for your region.

If you don’t see any matching camera type during setup, that’s a compatibility mismatch—not user error.

FAQ

Do I need a Google Nest account to use these cameras?

You need a Google account in Google Home. A Nest account is typically the same login you use for Google services, but the important part is that your Google Home app is signed into the correct account.

Will the $23 camera work on both iPhone and Android?

Usually, yes—Google Home runs on both iPhone and Android. The camera’s actual support depends on the model, but the pairing workflow is the same idea across platforms.

Can I set it up on 5 GHz Wi‑Fi?

Most entry-level cameras require 2.4 GHz. If you try 5 GHz and the camera won’t connect, split your SSIDs temporarily or switch your phone to a 2.4 GHz network for setup.

Why does live video work, but motion alerts don’t?

Check notification settings for the camera in Google Home and verify motion sensitivity/schedules in the camera’s settings (if available). Also confirm you haven’t enabled quiet hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

My camera is added, but it keeps going offline. What should I do?

Power-cycle the camera, confirm Wi‑Fi strength near the installation location, and consider moving to a stronger 2.4 GHz signal. If the camera has firmware updates, update them before assuming it’s a network problem.

Bottom Line

Native Google Home support for Walmart’s new $23 cameras is a welcome simplification—especially if you want fewer apps and more consistent controls. The setup is usually straightforward, but the most common failure point is still Wi‑Fi (2.4 GHz) and pairing mode timing.

If you follow the steps above, verify permissions, and handle firmware updates, you should be able to get live video and motion alerts working reliably in Google Home.
