The current speaker lineup includes the Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Audio and Nest Mini (2nd gen); the best fit depends on room, connectivity needs and how much you value newer smart-home standards.
Which Google Home speakers are current?
Google’s product overview lists three speakers: Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Audio and Nest Mini (2nd gen). It also identifies Google Home Max as no longer for sale. Local availability can differ, so check the listing for your country before choosing a model. The descriptions below reflect Google’s published positioning and specifications, not independent listening tests.

What are the main advantages?
Hands-free help and smart-home control
Google describes voice commands for music, answers, calendars, schedules, reminders, timers and compatible smart-home devices. That can make routine tasks convenient when your hands are busy. The exact commands, services and device compatibility depend on the product, account, region and settings; confirm that a specific device or feature is supported before relying on it.
#1 Best Overall
- Google Audio Bluetooth Speaker Wireless Music Streaming - Chalk
- Music here. Music there. Music everywhere - Create a home audio system that fills your home with sound.* Nest Audio works together with your other Nest speakers and displays, Chromecast-enabled devices, or compatible speakers. And it's easy to set up.
- Rich, full sound. Room filling sound with 30 watt woofer, tweeter and tuning software. Cranks out powerful punchy music to fill your room
- Connect with family and friends - Nest Audio helps you stay in touch. Just say, “Hey Google” to broadcast messages on every Nest speaker and display in the house. Use your Nest speakers as an intercom and chat from room to room.
- Huge help around the house. You can say things like, "Hey Google, what's the weather this weekend?" Ask Google about the news or sports scores. - Includes LED Key Chain (Color May Vary)
Three sizes and a newer connectivity option
The lineup gives buyers a compact speaker, a larger music-focused model and a 2026 model with Matter and Thread listed in its specifications. Matter and Thread may be useful when building a compatible smart home, but their presence does not guarantee that every accessory or feature will work. Check both the accessory’s requirements and Google’s current compatibility information.
Multi-speaker listening and Bluetooth flexibility
Google promotes multi-room listening and moving music among Nest speakers. You can also pair a Bluetooth speaker through the Google Home app; media then plays on the external speaker, while alarms, timers and assistant responses remain on the Google device. See Google’s instructions for pairing a Bluetooth speaker.

Physical microphone controls
The Google Home Speaker (2026) and Nest Audio specifications list a two-stage microphone-off switch. This provides a physical way to control the microphones, but it should not be treated as a complete privacy guarantee or a substitute for reviewing account and device settings.

What are the disadvantages and limitations?
They are not portable speakers
None of the three listed models has a battery; each needs a wall outlet to operate. Google states on its device specifications page that the listed devices “don’t come with a battery” and “must be plugged into a wall outlet to work.” That rules them out for listening away from power.

Setup depends on a phone or tablet, Wi-Fi and a Google Account
Google Home setup requires a Google Account, home Wi-Fi and a supported mobile device. Google lists Android 9.0 or later or iOS 17.0 or later for the app, and says setup cannot be completed on a computer. See Google’s Google Home app setup requirements; requirements can change.
Gemini for Home is not available everywhere
Gemini for Home voice assistant is rolling out selectively by country and language, and eligibility can depend on device and firmware requirements. Google also says that after switching a home to Gemini for Home, users cannot switch back to Google Assistant. Check the current country, language and device eligibility on Google’s Gemini for Home information page before changing assistants.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Published sound claims are not independent performance tests
Google provides driver specifications and descriptions such as “room-filling” or 360-degree sound, but those details do not establish comparative sound quality, maximum loudness, microphone accuracy or long-term reliability. The cited material does not include independent measurements, so it cannot support a claim that one model sounds better than another.

Privacy depends on settings and use
Google publishes privacy commitments for covered Nest devices used with Google Accounts, and some models include a microphone switch. Those facts do not establish that every user’s settings or data handling are identical. Review Google’s Nest privacy information and your own device and account settings rather than assuming a speaker never records or that a microphone control resolves every privacy concern.
Sound detection is not a substitute for alarms
Google says sound detection can identify sounds from alarms, but it does not detect smoke or carbon monoxide itself. The feature requires Google Home Premium and a US address, and is not a replacement for a proper alarm system. See Google’s sound detection information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which model makes sense for your needs?
- Choose Nest Mini (2nd gen) if you want a compact voice assistant for tasks such as timers, reminders, music and compatible smart-home controls, and do not need battery power.
- Consider Nest Audio if you want the larger, music-oriented option in Google’s lineup or plan to use multi-speaker listening. Its audio positioning is Google’s description, not a verified performance ranking.
- Consider Google Home Speaker (2026) if Matter, Thread, Wi-Fi 6 or Bluetooth 5.4 are relevant to your setup and you have verified local availability and accessory compatibility.
For all three, confirm that the required services and smart-home features work where you live. If sound quality is the deciding factor, listen to the models in person or consult independent testing rather than treating driver size or manufacturer descriptions as a verdict.
