The Google game does a smart thing: it turns those skills into quick challenges so your hands learn what your brain should ask for in a match.
This guide translates that “game training” into the real sport. You’ll get the rules you actually need, the techniques behind the mechanics, and drills you can run on any court so your throws start landing with purpose.

What the Google game is really teaching you about pétanque
Most learning games accidentally teach the wrong thing—speed without control, or randomness without decision-making. A good pétanque game focuses on three fundamentals: landing near the jack, controlling force, and choosing whether to point or shoot based on the situation.

Prerequisites: what you need before you start
You don’t need fancy gear, but you do need the right basics. If you’re using rental boules, your grip and release will feel different—plan a short warm-up so you don’t confuse equipment changes with technique issues.
Recommended equipment
- Boules: steel boules are most common for beginners. Choose a weight you can throw consistently (many casual players start in the 650–700 g range).
- Jack (cochonnet): the small target ball that defines scoring.
- Measuring tape: helpful for learning distances and diagnosing “short/over” habits.
- Chalk or marker: optional for practicing court lines.
- Gloves (optional): not mandatory, but they can steady grip when the weather is slippery.
The rules of pétanque (the full, practical version)
Official rules can vary slightly by league or country, but the core sport mechanics are consistent: throw from a fixed mark, land near the jack, score by proximity, and play until the end is finished.
Basic equipment
- Each player/team: typically has 3 boules in singles (and often 3 per player in triplets/doubles depending on format).
- Jack: set at the start of each end and remains the reference for scoring that end.
Court and targets
- Pitch: usually a rectangular playing area on gravel or sand. A common standard playing surface is gravel.
- Throwing line / circle: you start each end with the jack placed within the throwing area and then throw from the designated mark (or circle, depending on format).
- Measuring: if distances are close, you measure from the boule to the jack.
Starting a round (menage/pointing then throwing)
A match is built from ends (also called rounds). Each end has a sequence of throws until both sides have used their boules.

- Choose the jack position: the jack is placed at the start of an end within legal bounds.
- Set the throwing marks: players throw from their assigned position (for many casual formats, the toss must be made from a standing mark or within the circle).
- Point/throw order: the player who throws first starts the end by attempting to land closer to the jack than the opponent.
- Continue until all boules are thrown: the number of throws depends on the format (singles/doubles/triples).
How points are scored
Scoring is simple but unforgiving.
- Only the closest boules count. A team scores one point for each boule that is closer to the jack than the closest boule of the opponent.
- Measure if needed: if you can’t tell by eye, measure distance.
- No opponent points if none are closer: the team holding the jack (closest boule) can score multiple points if it also has the next closest boules.
Common situations and penalties
Pétanque rules are mostly about fairness and legality of throw position.
- Foot fault: you must respect the throw stance/mark rules. If your feet violate the allowed position, the throw may be declared invalid by the referee/umpire.
- Out-of-bounds: boules that land outside the legal area are typically removed from scoring for that end.
- Dead jack: if the jack moves and no longer sits where it should, officials typically handle it per local rules.
Step-by-step: play a match end to end
- Start the end: place the jack, confirm it’s legal, and take your throw position.
- Point for control: your first boule should aim to sit near the jack but not so hard that you overshoot.
- Respond based on score: if you’re behind, consider a shot to remove an opponent’s closest boule. If you’re ahead, you can sometimes tighten by pointing to cover.
- Play the last boule with a plan: don’t just throw—decide whether you want to (a) stay close, (b) hit and redirect, or (c) try a risky conversion if a win is on the line.
- Score and measure: determine the closest boules; measure if necessary.
- Move to the next end: reset the jack and repeat.
Core techniques the game is training you for
If you play the Google game as practice, your next job is to connect the “feel” to repeatable technique. The biggest performance gap for beginners is inconsistent force—so focus on repeatable release and pacing.

Pointing (placing the boule)
Pointing is about landing as close as possible. Your goal isn’t maximum distance—it’s maximum predictability.
- Aim: use the jack and the nearby terrain as your visual target.
- Force: treat power like a dial. Small changes in effort create big changes in range on different surfaces.
- Follow-through: keep your release consistent. A rushed throw usually becomes a short throw.
Shooting (hitting an opponent’s boule)
Shooting is physics plus timing: your boule travels to impact an opponent boule, then the opponent boule must move in a way that improves your position.
Recommended Free Tools
- Pick an outcome: either remove their closest, or redirect it so it lands farther than your planned placement.
- Don’t overhit: excessive force can scatter boules into better positions for the opponent.
- Control the line: your shot angle matters as much as your speed.
Bank shots and “zones”
On rough or bounded terrains, bounces can create opportunities. Even if the official rules limit some trick shots, banks are still part of real play.
Practice “zones” mentally: identify where your boule will tend to stop after contact, then build shots that exploit those landing tendencies.
Dealing with distance: short, medium, long
Beginners often treat every throw as the same. Don’t. Create three effort levels and map them to consistent distances.

Practice drills you can copy from the game
If the Google game made you think in “targets,” you’re ready to train the same thinking with real boules. Run drills for control first, then decision-making.
Drill 1: Accuracy ladder
Place the jack (or a substitute target) and attempt to land within a shrinking set of zones.
- Start with a wide target area (easy landing zone).
- Throw 10 boules, then record how many land in the zone.
- Move to a narrower zone and repeat.
Drill 2: Speed control
Use one fixed distance—same aiming point, same stance—and vary only force.
- Throw 5 boules with low effort.
- Throw 5 boules with medium effort.
- Throw 5 boules with high effort.
- Measure or visually track overshoots vs. shorts.
Drill 3: Edge discipline
This drill teaches “stay there” pointing and helps you stop losing games by nudging opponents into better positions.
- Place your target next to an “edge” (a boundary, slope, or visually marked line).
- Point so your boule finishes on the inside of the edge.
- If you cross the edge, reduce force. If you fall short, increase force slightly—don’t change everything.
Drill 4: One-boule decision making
Set up a simple end with two zones: one favorable for you and one favorable for your opponent. Then throw only one boule each round.

- Play Boules, Bocce, or Yard Bowl
- Be creative and make your own games
- Case measures 9.25 by 6.02 by 2.75-inches, Ball diameter: 2.75-inches

- Reset and repeat until you can reliably choose the correct action type.
Strategy: how strong players think
Winning pétanque is usually not about having a perfect throw. It’s about forcing your opponent into the wrong type of response.
When to point vs. shoot
- Point when: you’re near the jack already and you can cover safely. Small improvements often win ends.
- Shoot when: your opponent controls the end and you can remove their closest boule with a reasonable chance.
How to choose a target
Shots aren’t just “hit the boule.” Choose a target based on where the hit will send the opponent boule.
- Clear outcomes: aim to move the opponent boule beyond a competing line where your next boule can win.
- Avoid chaos: if the impact would scatter multiple boules into unknown positions, you might be swapping one problem for a worse one.
Managing risk with the jack
The jack is your compass. If it’s positioned so that small deviations win, pointing becomes powerful. If it’s exposed where shots can easily displace it, shooting becomes more valuable.
Common mistakes (and how to fix them fast)
- Mistake: chasing distance. Fix: pick a consistent effort level and practice that first. Distance without control loses to proximity.
- Mistake: changing your stance mid-game. Fix: keep the same feet placement and release rhythm for every throw of the same type.
- Mistake: over-shooting on gravel. Fix: reduce force; gravel can roll farther than you expect. Track results over 10 throws instead of guessing.
- Mistake: aiming at the boule instead of the outcome. Fix: in shooting, visualize where the opponent boule will end up after impact.
Troubleshooting: when your throws don’t behave
When the main plan fails, don’t panic. Diagnose which variable is broken: force, line, or surface behavior.
Problem: your points keep falling short
- Increase force by one small step and repeat 5 throws.
- Check grip and release: a “sticky” release can shorten distance.
- Inspect surface moisture: wet gravel often changes roll speed.
Problem: your points consistently go long
- Reduce force slightly, but keep the same aiming line.
- Confirm you’re not releasing later than usual.
- Consider wind or slope effects if the terrain is uneven.
Problem: your shots scatter everything
- Use lower force and a clearer angle to produce a single intended deflection.
- Practice “contact quality” by doing fewer shots, more directly at targets.
- If you can’t predict outcomes reliably, choose safer pointing to rebuild control.

Do I have to shoot every time I’m losing?
No. If you can point to improve your proximity without creating chaos, pointing can be the correct response. Strong play often alternates based on board position, not emotion.
What’s the quickest way to improve in one session?
Run the Speed control drill for 15 minutes and then the Accuracy ladder for 15 minutes. That combination improves your force control and target precision faster than trying to learn every shot type at once.
Why do my throws change when the surface changes?
Surface texture affects roll distance and stopping power. Gravel that’s drier may behave differently than wetter gravel, so you need to recalibrate force rather than blaming technique.

Technique matters, but decision-making and consistency matter too. Knowing when to point, when to shoot, and what outcome you’re creating is a skill you can practice.
Bottom Line
The Google game is a good start because it rewards the right behaviors: close landings, controlled force, and intentional choice between pointing and shooting. Your progress will accelerate once you turn those behaviors into repeatable drills and real match decisions.
If you practice one core objective per session—accuracy, speed control, or shot outcome prediction—you’ll feel the difference quickly, even against better players.
