Neither Google Flights nor Skyscanner is proven to be consistently cheaper. The best option depends on the route, dates, itinerary and booking provider. Google Flights separates results into “Best” and “Cheapest,” while Skyscanner lets you compare airline and travel-agency offers and set price alerts. Compare equivalent itineraries and verify the full fare with the provider before booking.
Which one finds cheaper flights?
There is no established winner for lowest fares across routes. The official help pages for both services explain how their search and alert features work, but do not establish that one consistently finds cheaper flights. Prices and available itineraries vary by trip, so compare the same origin, destination, dates, passengers, cabin and stop limits in each service.

Google Flights distinguishes between its “Best” and “Cheapest” results. Google says its default results show flights that offer the best trade-offs between price, convenience and ease of booking. Its Cheapest results prioritize low prices and can include travel-agency fares or itineraries with trade-offs, such as self-transfers or different airports for outbound and return legs. Google’s fare guidance explains these distinctions.

How the two services compare
| What matters | Google Flights | Skyscanner |
|---|---|---|
| Search results | Separates “Best” results, which balance price and convenience, from “Cheapest” results, which prioritize low prices and may involve itinerary or booking trade-offs. | Shows airline and travel-agency booking options for a selected flight. |
| Price alerts | Supports tracking a specific flight or a route. For route tracking, “Any dates” can send email updates when the monthly minimum drops significantly; Google may send regular updates with the best available prices if there is no sufficiently large drop. | Supports alerts for a route and specific dates. You must be logged in to create one. |
| Displayed price and final total | Cheapest results can include agency fares. Check the provider’s final fare and terms. | Displayed prices include estimated taxes and charges, but provider-added options such as luggage, seat allocation and insurance can raise the final price. |
| Date and airport flexibility | Route tracking offers an “Any dates” option; Cheapest results may use different airports in the same city for outbound and return legs. | Search guidance supports choosing cities or airports and filtering results. |
Skyscanner says it searches over 1,200 travel providers, but that is an undated company-reported figure, not a verified current count or evidence that it covers more options than Google Flights. Skyscanner’s overview gives the figure without a publication year.
What to check before choosing the cheapest result
- Airport codes: Confirm the airport for every leg. Different airports in the same city can add ground-transport time and cost.
- Connections and transfers: Check layover duration and whether a self-transfer requires you to collect and recheck baggage. A low headline fare may come with extra work or risk.
- Complete fare: On the booking provider’s page, check baggage, seat selection, payment options and any other added charges before comparing totals.
- Booking terms: Review change and cancellation conditions with the provider. Compare the terms for the exact fare, not just the flight.
- Booking source: Compare the airline’s offer with any travel-agency option shown, including the complete price and terms.
Skyscanner says its prices include estimated taxes and charges, while options added by a provider can affect the final price. Its price guidance covers displayed prices; its search help describes selecting among airline and travel-agency options. Treat the displayed amount as a comparison starting point, then confirm the live total at checkout.

How to compare the same trip fairly
- Enter the same origin and destination, dates, passenger count, cabin and stop limits in both services.
- Compare equivalent itineraries. Check airport codes, layover times, self-transfers and baggage handling.
- Open the booking options and compare the complete fare, baggage, seats, payment choices and change or cancellation terms on the provider’s page.
- If your dates are flexible, use the price-tracking features available in each service, then compare the options again before booking.
Does Google Flights track flight prices?
Yes. Google documents tracking for a specific flight and for a route. For a route, you can choose “Any dates” to receive email updates when the monthly minimum drops significantly; if no sufficiently large drop occurs, Google says it may send regular updates with the best available prices. See Google’s flight and price tracking instructions.
Google also describes price tips based on past trends and notes that future prices may differ. Treat a tip or alert as a signal to check fares, not a guarantee of a particular price.
How do I set a Skyscanner price alert?
Skyscanner’s alert is for a route and specific dates, and you need to be logged in. Its help page, updated 20 March 2026, provides steps for desktop, mobile web and the app. Start with Skyscanner’s price-alert instructions for the relevant interface.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you book through the airline or a travel agency?
There is no universal answer based on the search results alone. Compare the airline and agency offers for the same itinerary, then check the provider’s final total and terms. A lower agency price may not be the better choice if it comes with different baggage, payment, change or cancellation conditions. Make the decision using the offer shown at checkout, not only the search result.
